Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors
Quisoves Pugnat replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
I'm confused as to how BIONICLE will necessarily confuse and alienate folks by linking back to its original canon of nine years. If that's the case, then the Abrahmsverse Star Trek movies should have been universally panned for their alternate-timeline shenanigans, linking the reboot back, as they did, to a canon comprising at least twenty-eight years' worth of stories. This is a non-sequitur. "Alternate" does not equal "less than" or "copy" or "secondary." Besides, who really cares? Greg is not the only person capable of comprehending the entirety of Gen1's canon, is he? Perhaps this is pedantic of me, but could you please offer some evidence for these claims? How many fans want a connection? How much time and how many resources would need to be devoted to it? -

I am rather puzzled by the insistence that a connection between the two canons is unthinkable. I get that some would rather that Gen2 be completely unconnected to its predecessor, but it's by no means out of the question. Abrams' Star Trek did it (without bogging the films down in lore.) I get the impression that it's a fairly common practice. For example, there were plans for the aborted 90's hard Doctor Who reboot to eventually link back to the classic series. -

I could say the same about the Doctor Who expanded universe. I adore the likes of Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Bernice Summerfield, Fitz Kreiner, Nobody No-one the Extra-Dimensional Word Lord, the Alex Macqueen Master, the alternate David Warner Doctor etc. but I don't expect most Doctor Who fans I come across to know about them. Not knowing about them doesn't confuse the casual viewer of the television program. -
Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors

As far as I recall, the Ignika image was quite quickly dismissed as a placeholder (we had our first glimpse of the final MoC as early as September, no?) Virtually all such speculation came from the Mask of Time-things. Frankly, I don't see how this is equivalent. This is a rather finalized-looking promotional poster, not an early boxart-prelim. More to the point, there seems to be no need to use Mata Nui as a stand-in, when images of Okoto already exist. Which is not to say that this indicates a connection between the two canons. But it does seem to carry significance. Say, do we know where the large version of the poster came from? Oh, but a man can dream... =P -
I felt like I was forgetting one... I'm curious as to whether or not a model can incorporate (pun not intended) it in a manner that is not overtly skeletal.

Which is a shame, as it's a great piece, and wouldn't have gone amiss on one of this year's Toa. It occurs to me that, with the introduction of the 2016 armor, we have enough CCBS chestplates for a whole team of Toa!

Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors
Quisoves Pugnat replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
As I said, it's not a perfect comparison. But the fact remains that LEGO had no problem with recycling the same heroes, without any shakeup, for three years of Hero Factory (2011-2013.) In fact, LEGO originally planned for the Inika/Mahri to complete the Ignition Saga. Similarly, it seems that Mata Nui, Ackar, and Kiina would have gone continued through 2011, had BIONICLE not been canceled. -

Hero Factory rather set one, methinks. Granted, it's not a perfect comparison, but I imagine that the marketing factors are quite similar. -
Well, this is embarrassing. In my defense, I was rather tired when I first viewed the video. =P

It's interesting that this almost, but not quite, follows the book. If nothing else, the precise method of Grinder's defeat is different: Also, that teaser-carving. NOSTALGIA OVERLOAD!

Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors

No stranger than an advertisement for the Ninjago tv series, in one of the graphic novels, using pictures from the defunct LEGO Universe. Cell-shading tends to have a liquid look, from what I've seen. Tahu, on the other hand, looks like a CGI image that's been run through GIMP's oil-paint filter, while his background looks too simple to be CGI. -

That looks good, but it has a painted appearance, which leads me to think that it isn't in the animation style. Heck, the fact that it uses a 2015 set should indicate that it's merely promotional and unlikely to reflect the finished product. -
Speaking of golden masks, do we have any inkling as to when and how the 14 karat Mask of Creation will be given away?

Was this meant to put the lie to complaints that Tahu, Uniter of Fire has too much gold? If so, you succeeded admirably. Either way, this is a lovely creation, quite possibly my favorite Toa revamp to date.

Corrrrrrrrect! I'm not sure who else would fit the bill. =P

Though if we're going to do that, Ekimu needs a thick Scottish burr and a question-mark-hammer. "My favorite part was when Lewa was possessed by a Skull Spider, and Onua had to appeal to his suppressed will! What was yours?"

Hence the term "ulrabuild-thingies." I only knew their price, and I couldn't remember their umbrella name. Were pictures of them leaked? Now that you mention it, I can see that. It also reminds me of this piece.

He's a Pygmy Bandersnatch, no doubt about it. De gustibus non est disputandum, as they say. I can see that textures clashing could be a problem (I can sort of see DV's complaint about Brutaka,) but I can't think of a BIONICLE set that I've looked at and thought eeeew, the contrasting textures ruin it! To my mind, variety of textures does not mean disparity of textures. I mean, a sulcata tortoise's shell contrasts greatly with its skin, but I wouldn't call it ugly on that account. You know, if it weren't for the price of the Nexo Knights-ultrabuild-thingies, I'd say that the new chestpiece is also being used for them. It has a very historical and terrestrial look to it, as opposed to the more utilitarian or mechanical chestplates introduced under Hero Factory.

The milky-silver bits on the Toa's masks (not to mention the Nuva symbols on their chests) have me thinking: Might 2016 rehash the stolen elemental power-plot from 2003? -
Speaking as someone who is fond of each year of BIONICLE, I still think you'd be hard-pressed to say that 2001 is aesthetically identical to 2004, let alone to 2006.

Whether or not he thinks that is irrelevant to his point, that he thinks Brutaka manifested the worst of Bionicle's aesthetics.

He was talking about aesthetics, not business. Though I dare say he's knowledgeable in that area as well.

Remind me to avoid the general reaction to new set reveals, in future. Ah, Greg, how right you were. =P I'm surprised Tahu isn't getting more love. He's leaps and bounds ahead of his 2015 incarnation, by the look of him.

Indeed. Keep in mind that Gen1 was cancelled in 2008, which didn't affect 2009 and its promise of "a new era of BIONICLE glory." The designers were working on the original 2010 sets (the Baterra, etc.) when the announcement came.
