Maybe so it'd be a bigger surprise? Thinking about it, I thought of something else. Everyone's been pretty confident that they could just go there and tromp the witch. No one expected any major major twists - from a monster that can control minds. Maybe it was meant/added in to shake the story-line up a bit, and remind the heroes they aren't fully omnipotent?

Thinking it over, I'm seriously doubting that this is the end of the #135 party. I'm guessing the party will be KO'd, and then have to fight their way out of some sort of prison.

What should someone do when their character isn't there to parlay with the enemy, they're on a blood-quest to kill that enemy - and their character wouldn't logically stand around and let everyone else have a little chat before they charge in and attack? What about the smoke bombs? Shouldn't they do something, at least?

It looks like it was actually a side-quest - there was probably a chance for Pretzel to not be Mind-flayed, but he lost/failed the side-quest. Either way, not left field, more "so that's what happened". ...Wait a sec - is Johon possibly Mind-Flayed as well? :look:

It's Sandy's game, at heart. If he needs to nudge the plot-line towards a particular track, I think he has the full and complete right to do that.

According to the rules, the day was supposed to end - technically, it should have ended before I got that post out. In the case I died, I wanted to re-highlight my suspicion of Vasquez, lest it be missed in the shuffle. It wasn't a jump, it was a "Yeah, didn't notice her posting style, good to notice that. Keep an eye on it.".
