  1. The Black Knight laughed."'We're using them as blackmail.' So, it's alright to threaten our friends to get your way, but when we do it, it's blackmail? Pick one or the other, Charon. You can't have it both ways." "Arthur, I've talked with Immortalis myself - probably more than any of you. Maybe more than all of you combined. He's not going to change his mind, just because you tell him he ought to."
  2. "I'm seeing it, Charon. I'm seeing you killing a man. That wasn't a mercy killing. Without knowing exactly what she did, I can't speculate further - but that was not a mercy killing." "And before you start to rationalize it, I'd just like to point out that it happened because Immortalis is attacking Eubric. No attack on Eubric, no need for a "mercy killing"."
  3. "I remembered Arthur's words about the Proggs being a test, and I suddenly remembered what Eschaton is notorious for - namely, dreams.I connected the two, and shared the idea with the three people that had voted against flooding the Proggs out. That is all." "Agreed." "I'm all for that."
  4. "I'm alright, Karie.Karie, Arthur, Masson - private huddle, please. Just for a moment..." OoC: Check PMs.
  5. "It's definitely to slow us down, at least at part. But the Proggs...it seemed so much like a test. Some sort of an example, as it were...but why..." The Munchkin frowned."I talked with him. I spoke with him. Some people add tests to things for no reason. But he's not like that....If he's passing judgement on Eubric, he's passing judgement. There's no reason for him to add tests, unless... No. No." He shook his head. "But..." He reached into his pack, and pulled out his Angel's Helmet. "But how would I have this, then...will I have it if...?" He shook his head again. "No. No, I have to be reading too much into this."
  6. "I think we found our next test..."He was about suggest that someone pull out a Magnifying Glass, but thought better of it, and decided that it was probably more in the party leader's jurisdiction to suggest that sort of thing. "Should I toss a bone down the alley?" he asked, as he eyed the strange path.
  7. "Insults are not arguments. If you have reasons why you believe that I am delusional, then state them, else this conversation is pointless."The deep rumble of the half-giant's voice echoed through the stone caverns. Lind cocked his ear and listened. "I do believe he's volunteering to come back and help rebuild... A worthy idea..."
  8. EDIT.
  9. "Jinnipher..." The Munchkin's tone was both serious and kind. "I realized something back there. All along...there have been things about Immortalis that fascinated me. Things that drew me - and some of them still do.But I finally realized why we have to face him. He's doing what he knows to be best. If I was in his place, with all his wisdom - I would probably do the same thing. But...it's not up to us - or even to him - to "play god". People need to be allowed to keep their free will - their FULL free will. Because when we start thinking that we're "just doing all of it for the greater good," we start thinking that the effects don't matter. And they DO. They matter to EVERYONE. Just because we don't see the damage that our "for the greater good," actions caused, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And it's a very simple idea - but...when you're all wrapped in up in personal dreams of being the one who makes choices...you forget how much pain those choices can cause. And it's so simple..." Lind pounded his fist against his forehead. "But...sometimes you have to actually see something, to talk it out...to truly realize it." He straightened. "And that's why we have to stop Immortalis. It's just too much power, too much risk of causing unneeded pain. Look what the group did back there. The group destroyed the homes of hundreds of innocent Proggs, just because it was intent on "the greater good," of stopping Immortalis. Well, Immortalis is bent on saving the world from the destructive force Eubric is going to someday become. On his own "greater good" It's the same thing. One individual, or group, just assuming that whatever they are doing is more important than anything else because it's part of their "greater good". And it's so simple, so simple...!" Lind continued to bash his forehead.
  10. If this is about the earlier encounter...I forget the exact details, but if Lind shouldn't have been able to understand her, my apologies. If this is about during the mob encounter, Lind didn't speak to any dragons until after Arx had blocked his path. I assumed Arx was speaking so that Lind could understand. Whether Miirym's remarks were understandable, is more up in the air, but it made for a humorous moment, so I went with it. If Flipz would like to correct me, and she was not understandable, I will cheerfully change them. Endgame, could you roll/calculate that, to see how much damage was done?
  11. "Sounds good." The Black Knight looked over his shoulder, and half-smiled at the Youngling's response to the Dragoon's surprised outburst."Perhaps after that, we should hold a forum on Good Timing*. Apparently I'm not the only one that has trouble with it..." The brief moment of levity fading from his face, to be replaced with the same look of thoughtfulness that he had a few minutes earlier, Lind nodded, and took his place in the formation.*OoC: I'm assuming that Miirym was speaking so that both humans and dragons could understand her?
  12. OoC: I though Arthur and Miirym left the cave? The Black Knight nodded at the returning Dragoon. "Sir Arthur, we need to have a good talk when this was over. I think I just finally understood some things.I understood, and agreed with most of what you were saying earlier, but I didn't quite get one central bit. I get it now." He re-adjusted Gladius. "Solon's right. We need to get moving-" A middle-sized blue and white dragon slammed down in front of him. "If you really think that I - someone who has admitted his admiration of Immortalis freely and without reserve - am some sort of plant - then you are failing in your duty to the group by slowing us down with some pointless debate. You would be better served just hurrying ahead and throwing me into the crowd. From what I have heard of the Baba incident, it would be near-impossible to prove that I am not some sort of a plant, and trying to pick me over for such a proof is a waste of time. If people fear what few things are in my Bag of Holding, then I will cheerfully hand them over to Arthur, or to Karie - but if not, this argument is pointless. Have Arthur cast Scroll of Anti-Magic, Scroll of this, Scroll of that, do what you will - but this conversation is pointless, and unless you further stand in my path, over." "And I just understood, for the first time - well, second, but that first one was different - that the immediate effects effect people just as much as the greater goal. It may be "necessary," in our eyes - but it's not our eyes that are seeing their homes destroyed, it's the eyes of those people out there."
  13. (For starters, yes, "character discussion is best done after the fact," but I'd like to get this out there before the deluge of post #147 quest reviews - which I can't but imagine shan't be terribly complimentary of a certain player.) It's definitely not going to go down as the most approved-of choice in Heroica RP history, but I'm frankly glad that the #147 mob moment happened. Lind, as a character, has always been fascinated by the idea of Justified Control. That's one of the reasons he was siding with Immortalis so much. Arthur tried to reason with him - and I could further speculate on this, but it's beside the point - but he couldn't see why, "if no one was going to be hurt(by removing some portion of their "free will")," "Doing something for the better good," wasn't a better modus operandi*. But for him to suddenly stand up there, and to realize that they were doing the exact same thing as Immortalis - to directly see people being hurt through "destroying something for the better good," - well, it was/is an in-character turning point, and one that I don't think he would have encountered any other way. It's pretty simple stuff, but it's also important stuff. Yes, I'm sure good arguments can be made as to why it was "selfish" for Lind(the player and the character) to "derail" the quest like that, and I'm sure that even those that don't condemn it for that, will say that it could have been written out much more gracefully - but for Lind(the character), it was a ground shattering revelation**, and a "moment of insight" that he wasn't likely to have gotten any other way. Thank you, fellow #147 players, and Endgame. *Obviously "Apologizing to another PC," is a pretty self-centered "better good," but that's because of his in-character "Knight Templar" view on things. He wanted to do it, so to him, it was for "the greater good". **Again, WBD's excellent post on separation of character and player applies.
  14. "Because I was trying to calm a disturbed crowd, and reassure them that everything was for the best. The fact that I then realized you all were doing exactly what Immortalis is doing on a smaller scale, and confronted you with it. I brought it to a boil, but you lit the fire. I didn't destroy those peoples' homes." "Fine.Fydelle, Solon? I am honestly sorry for the trouble we have brought, and I apologize for having inadvertently stirred it further while trying to calm it." With his head dipped, he followed after Jinnipher and Thormanil. "Before you say anything, Karie, I am well aware that most of this - all of this - applies to me. I'm looking forward to having those talks with Arthur and Annienal. If I'm going to be calling people out on hypocrisy, I have a lot of cleaning up to do..."
  15. "They raise a good point. 'A giant dragon is trying to take command of people's free will? Oh, he must be stopped and taught a lesson!'." He pointed the rest of the group. "How many times have almost all of you said nearly those exact words?" He pointed at Karie. "You keep talking about 'teaching him a thing or two,' or however you put it.But, suddenly, when anything involves you, you have the right to just do whatever you want, and no one has any right to stop or chastise you. You people are hypocrites. 'These people need housing? Oh, it doesn't matter. Let's just take the easy way - no worries, no one will find out what happened, or who did it.' At least Immortalis has the dragon genitals to openly admit who he is, and what he does, and why he does it. You people are cowards." He glared at the group. "Yes, I'm sure I'm "jeopardizing the mission," by first trying to calm the situation, and then forcing you to confront what you've done. But you know what? Frankly, a rule under Immortalis would be better than this system of "Heroism". At least he cares about people, and will openly discuss what he's doing and why. You people just do what you want, and don't care a fig about the aftermath, or the people involved. You just want to be the shining knights in armor that defeat the big nasty dragon. Well, congratulations - to these people, YOU are the big nasty dragons."
  16. Well, with Immortalis being the Father of All Dragons, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if their was some familial connection. (Unless that was the joke...)
  17. Huh. So that's what Character Development is like. I don't think I've had an (in-character) moment like that since the ending of #122... Fun Stuff.
  18. "It's a mob. Do you really expect them to tell the difference between the parts of the party that voted one way or the other? If they rush us, I'm not silly enough to think that they're going to pick sides.Do not put words in my mouth. I did not "throw the rest of you to the sharks". I explained that there were two sides to the thing - those of us against the idea, and those that voted to flood the place. And beyond that, this is a mob. Do you really think I'd be so silly as to think that, if they were to attack us, that they'd be calm enough to tell us all apart?" Sighing, the Black Knight reached behind him, and grabbed the arm of the retreating (vertically challenged) Giant."No. You did your part in making this bed, and now you get to face the aftermath - which I have hopefully diffused. Hopefully. You want to be "heroes"? Fine. Let's "be heroes". Heroes don't run away from a mess they've made. And you all definitely made this one." He sighed, and looked out over the crowd. "Perhaps I could have done differently. But I saw a situation that needed defusing. And congratulations to those that made it, you get to defuse it. Next time, don't destroy someones' house, and think that it doesn't matter. All actions have consequences, and they should be faced..." He tilted his head. "Hmm. Even I'm learning from this." He nodded at Karie. "You know, you're right. Arthur was on a high horse, but where he was coming from was correct. Free will in all things is important...And if you violate someone's free will - in any way, even in those that don't harm them directly - you have to face the consequences..."
  19. Lind continued to look out over the mob, but responded quietly out of the corner of his mouth."This is a bad situation, that bodes to become an even worse one. I am trying to do what I can to defuse it one way or the other - whether it is through calming the people down, or at the very least, letting the people to understand that this was not a decision the Progg leaders made lightly. If worst comes to worst, they may turn that anger on us, but after we walked through that encounter with an immortal dragon's most powerful angels, I cannot imagine a handful of Proggs is going to slow us down that tremendously - and certainly not any more than another sequence of "who has the moral high ground"."
  20. The Black Knight bowed. "My apologies, and that is quite a reasonable reason.I am sure the Progg leaders have your housing conditions well in mind, and are even now trying to figure out how to better them." "I voted for swimming." "True. Unless things get exceptionally bad. In which case, they'll be wanting to arm themselves..."In the background, the mob continued to grow louder, while the party continued to in-fight. Sighing, the Black Knight went to the edge of the path, and took a very deep breath. "ATTENTION." The intimidating voice of the Black Knight rang out loudly in the cave. It was not a cruel note that he reached, but it was a note that demanded attention. "Thank you for your attention. For starters, I would like to say that I was of the party that did not support flooding the cave. I deeply regret the - temporary - destruction of your homes, and your current lost state. However, the moment was a difficult one. We could either lose excessive amounts of time reaching Billow - with the potential loss of hundreds, if not thousands of Progg lives - or we could flood the tunnel, temporarily obstruct the housing process, and keep all of you alive, and safe. I thought that we could take the first one, and escape the loss; others thought that the second one was safer. In the end, the choice was made to keep your lives safe, at the cost to homes. The Progg leaders are sorry - the party is sorry - I am sorry - but in the end, it was decided, that your lives were more valuable than your homes. The lives of you...the lives of your wives...and the lives of your children. All claims will be dealt with in time. The housing project will be finished, and the colony will once more be on the road to prosperity. Please, do not let the situation deteriorate even further, by resulting to mob violence. It will not bring you any benefit, and will only bring harm to your family, by further delaying and hampering the Progg leaders' ability to repair the situation."
  21. "You're welcome to it." "Well, they are in the middle of nowhere, so they do have to hike the cost up - but they are a bit pricey.I'm ready to move on, whenever everyone else is."
  22. OoC: Oops, my bad. I missed the "Head slot" bit on the suit."I can definitely see the reason in that logic. Anyone else want the Helmet? If not, I'm just going to stash it away." "There's Charon, Immortalis's second in command. Master of portals, and a pretty charismatic guy - when he's not trying to drop a tunnel on your head. And Strivus - he trains Immortalis's angels using golems. If Immortalis is going to send anyone after us, I'd imagine it will be Strivus..." "That depends on what you're offering - and for how much..."
  23. Could someone have taken a Slimy Sword, WP: 2, split it into two separate weapons, applied a different effect to each, and then combined them again, for a ?And if so...yeah, those swords really need to get nerfed. Or be sold to someone who will only use them for good. Maybe they could eventually be character-bound, somehow*? They'd still be OP, but it'd be contained, at least. *Only after Lind gets back from #147, and I try and haggle my way into a Slimy Sword, WP: 1, of course.
  24. It's not the WP you need to look at, it's the effects. (Which is probably what you were doing, trying to buy a WP: 2 weapon, but just clarifying. )I don't believe Sealed is the most uncommon effect out there, but it's uncommon enough to be handy. Like Star-Breaker - sure, it only deals WP: 5, but it has a 1/2 chance of Stun, which is handy if you muff a roll. Speaking of effects, to all you "thinking about hosting one" QMs out there - if you want your players to love you, have a blacksmith/etc., offer effect upgrades. Not too many - just one or two, and not so powerful that they're infringing on the turf of the Old Guard - but not overly weak, either. See Endgame's smith in #143 for a good example of how to structure it*.
  25. OoC: If you don't/need want it, that's fine, but Asphalt, did you see my post where I offered Vindsval the helmet? "Apology accepted."Seeing how downcast the mage was over the mistake, the knight tried to pat him on the back - although it was rather strange, trying to pat a being made entirely of smoke. "Probably my fault, a bit - I'll try to be less ambiguous in future." "Define we.Because some of us actually agree with some of "the Dragon's" ideas." The Black Knight waved his hand. "I'm not advocating for it, directly, but you have to admit - we'd have long since been to Eschaton, if we hadn't stopped every five minutes to bicker. Now, if there had been something directly supervising and commanding us..." He held up his hand. "Not advocating for it per se, just pointing out that it would have been more efficient. Long arguments on the morality of soul-releasing and "do as you would do" - where's that from, by the way? - are fine and all - but when we're all trying to stop a "genocidal Dragon," as y'all put it - they really do slow us down." Lind sighed. "She's two hundred years old, and she does not let anyone forget it.She was a Hero before most - really, all - of us joined. She came back a few months ago." He shrugged. "Honestly, I see both sides on this one. Jinnipher's right - sending up what amounts to signal flares in the shape of their departing souls - wasn't the safest idea, seeing as how we might very well have a second wave or two hunting us down. And you're right, in that leaving souls behind wouldn't have been terribly kind."
