Heroica RPG - Quest #147: Judgment Day
Lind Whisperer replied to Endgame's topic in The Heroica Archive
"A fair point." "And I was just getting comfortable..."Grunting, the Munchkin rose off the ground, and joined the others. -
This is actually something I was thinking about last night. With Heroica, I think we often ascribe modern day morals to situations, just so long as it doesn't get in the way of game experience. Killing is fine and fun, but even the hint of not-entirely consensual anything, can be "monstrous".If you actually look back at the sorts of people that fulfilled the sort of "hired mercenary" roles our characters typically play...they weren't moral paragons. Yes, there were a few that "knight erranted"...but a great many of them didn't. Now, I'm not saying that-if it's in character for them-our characters should excuse...morally dubious behavior by other characters - but that we should keep in mind the actual atmosphere. We're not walking around in a modern city, we're living in a time era where brothels and...other things, are seen or referenced frequently. Having a character make a gesture or action that could be misinterpreted badly can cause disgust in fellow PCs and NPCs, certainly, but we should also keep in mind the setting we're playing in. This isn't a modern day situation, and that should be factored into character responses. *Before everyone misreads this, re-read the first sentence again. I'm not making a statement about "consensuality," I'm saying we're attributing modern day morals to medieval-era situations.** **Which of course segues into the obvious response that rape was even more of a crime back then then it is now. Which is perfectly true. I'm saying that to talk about it from a "consent/non-consent" standpoint is a blatantly modern view, and ignores the fact that we're playing characters in a medieval setting. And yes, if you want to play a character that views things from that perspective, that is definitely your choice. But we're playing mercs, in a medieval setting. We're not all playing paragons. Not everyone should have the exact same stance on the issue. Some people will have the same views, others will have different views - but to have everyone in the group approach issues with a modern viewpoint*...well, you either have a very progressive group of heroes, or someone is forgetting the setting.

Heroica RPG - Quest #147: Judgment Day
Lind Whisperer replied to Endgame's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Sir Arthur and I had...differing opinions. We had a fight, called each other a few names, criticized each other's characters, and he ended it by flouncing off into the woods with his dragon." The Munchkin shrugged. "I was being a little bit too nonchalant about free will, he was ignoring the fact that we're mercs and trying to go off on a long spiel about morality - ignoring the fact that all of us kill for money as a casual profession. There was wrong on both sides, that's all I can say..." -

"There's a girl I...was trying to romance.Remember Moone? Remember that darn hat? Yeah." The Black Knight shook his head. "I've been trying to find a way to strike up a conversation with her when our paths crossed - Dodekube knows if Warlen, cheerful Warlen was that ticked at me, at whatever I did or said...I can only imagine what she must feel towards me. The witch in there was selling Love Potions or something - or at least, she gave every intimation she was selling them, until a person actually tried to buy one... It was not my brightest idea ever, but I just thought maybe, if she wouldn't speak to me - I'd just use one - for just a minute." Before Karie could interject, he held up his hand. "Not for anything untoward, or wrong...just to get her to sit down for five minutes, and to look her in the eyes, and tell her I'm sorry for whatever it was that happened, and that I hope she has a good life. Then hand her the antidote, and walk away." -
Lind's still trying to have one single good relationship*, let alone perfect ones... *That doesn't fall apart.

"Matthias? What the heck did I ever do to him, other than argue over loot distributed?" "...Let me repeat the part where I wanted to talk to her and end the...whatever it was. This rain seems to be affecting your hearing." "You're putting words in my mouth, Dragon. I've been trying to politely ignore you, but you keep butting into conversations that really don't concern you." "At this point, you haven't heard a single word I've said, nor do you seem to be likely to ever listen to anything besides your own holy rhetoric." Lind grunted assent, and walked away. He looked back over his shoulder, as if to say one last thing to Arthur...then shook his head.Ignoring the mud, he squatted down beside the Progg. "Lind Whisperer, rogue-cum-Black-Knight-cum-Assasin and back to Black Knight. We'll probably either come to be desperate enemies, or we'll be friends for a few days and then everything will fall apart. Pleasure to meet you." -

"I'm trying to blooming say goodbye to them, so they can go off and live their wonderful life, while I continue on in...this life.If that's utterly despicable in your book...We have very different books. And frankly - I don't really value my life terribly highly anymore. According to everyone I run into, it's more or less worthless. You want to try and kill me? Go right ahead. And what friends have I hurt? And what acts of unspeakable evil have I tried to commit? And when you answer that, remember all the people you've killed. Murdered. Because what we do is murdering, for money." -
Yes, sir. Flipz, I'm sorry for any negativity...well, no, that implies that there might not have been any negativity on my part, and there was negativity...I'm sorry for getting angry.

OoC: Yes. And. I. Posted. My. Bit. First.I could have gotten my rules wrong, I'm following the rules that I thought were in place. I'd be perfectly happy to cede to your post, except that it directly influences Karie's response to my post - which I, unfortunately, posted first. OoC: Changing the potentional situation from:"Yo, Karie, everyone thinks I'm a monster now." "What else is new?" "Karie, my gosh, Lind is a monster." "Yeah, that's what he said." to: "Karie, my gosh. Lind is a monster!" "No!" "Apparently, I'm a monster now." "Lind, what did you do!" ...is slightly different than "accommodating" in my book. OoC: I'm playing by the rules I thought everyone was playing by. If I was wrong, I'll happily let you retcon Lind's actions. -
I was always under the impression that "first post trumps future posts," and if you end up second post - like I have, on several occasions - you edit your post to reflect the first person's actions. For example: Now, according to my impression, Person B couldn't - or shouldn't - post: Was I wrong, or would that post by Person B's be acceptable according to the rules?

Fine. I'd also argue that killing hundreds and hundreds of people for money/goods/etc. isn't exactly the sanest or healthiest thing ever, but apparently we're just going to overlook that bit... ...If you're going to say there's not a significant moral difference between, "Causing someone to be fully incapacitated, with likely intent to harm," and "Causing someone to fall in love with you"... ^

OoC: No, you blatantly changed my actions. I was talking to Karie before anyone else came out, but by your timeline, now she's hearing it with "Lind's a Monster!" ringing in her ears. OoC: And "RP" or not "RP," I'm pretty darn sure I'm tired of having people grossly accuse my character behind his back. -
Yes, there is. Actually...Endgame never actually said what they were. Love potion can mean anything from "roofies" to "falling in love with someone for no reason". My reaction is being ticked at having my character called a Monster by someone who used a "Love Potion" a lot more maliciously than Lind ever would have, and at having someone try to retcon actions that I made.

Heroica RPG - Quest #147: Judgment Day

OoC: It doesn't make logical sense because it was edited in after I had already posted.Endgame, QM judging request - which timeline was it, because I don't think either of us is likely to go with the other's. Timeline A: Lind storms out first, tells Karie he's dead to everyone. Arthur storms out, tells Karie that Lind is now a monster Lind is ticked at being called a monster. Arthur and Miiirym discuss things, and go off into the woods. Timeline B: Arthur, using the well-known Mage ability of Retcon, somehow leaps before Lind, and tells Karie Lind's a monster. Arthur then talks to Miirym, and goes off into the woods. Lind does nothing, because all my actions are suddenly and miraculously retconned, even though I had posted it first. ...Yes, I am in a bit of a bad mood. This game has rules, and unless I'm greatly mistaken, you can't retcon someone's specific actions, that they posted before you, just by adding in, "Uh, I did it first.". -
The circumstances were different, but Arthur's being a bit of a hypocrite. I seem to remember someone using a Love Potion in #139*. *Yes, it was for battle, but I can't imagine Arthur knew exactly what he would end up using it for when he bought it. Also, if it comes down to "moral implications," I'd say that "Trying to have a conversation with someone," is slightly less outrageous than "Completely incapacitating someone so you can kill them easily.".

"Monster?" Now the Munchkin was angry."MONSTER? "I was trying to buy a potion so I could having a single conversation with someone just to figure out what the heck happened between us! If that's too "monstrous" for you, Mr. Goody-Two-Boots, I'm surprised they haven't already deified you." -

"Yes, I seem to hear that from all corners anymore, Mr. Acts-All-Fatherly-And-Then-When-We-Finally-Meet-Up-Again-Years-Later-Is-Suddenly-All-Sour-For-No-Reason."The Black Knight sighed. "Well, shall we get moving on to Billow, so we can get this whole mess over with - none of which we're getting paid for - before I unintentionally sever whatever few relationships I haven't already somehow mucked up?" He walked out of the hut, and nodded to Karie. "For point of reference, I'm apparently dead to everyone. Just so you're in the loop..." -

"Well, never hurts to ask..." "Oh, sure, like you've never accidentally gotten blackout drunk before...I don't even know what happened that night... One minute, I'm saying farewell to everyone, the next I'm waking up in a corner of the Hall with elf ears glued on my head, late for a quest...And everyone's mad at me. Not that anyone will actually say why, but everyone's mad at me..." -

"Oh, they threw up a smashing bash for us.They were a little bit sulky when we left, but other than that, they seemed quite cheerful." "It's a pity the storm isn't sentient, or I'd be suggesting we figure out a way to disperse the potion into the thunderheads." The Black Knight spread out his hands. "There are two possibilities that spring instantly to mind. One. I, and Jinnipher, have previously met this gentleman's brothers. He serves the same role as they, and we are in very little danger. Two. Immortalis read my mind - or Jinnipher's, but the way she talks back, I don't know if he'd ever have a chance - and put him as a trap, to lead us astray."
