Two questions - wands are ranged weapons, correct? And the SHIELD roll for the Mage: It says that the mage's power overflows causing a random element out of those available to the mage to be used - but I have Warlen calling an Amethyst?

QM Note: Sorry I didn't run this earlier. Kintobar's editing his post instead of making a new one caused me to miss it. Round Two of Highway Holdup Vindsval vs. Hanson - (Verkenner) - Back Row - Shield - Miracle - (10x2+15=35 health to all allies, all allies restored to full health, Vindsval -1 ether) Annienal vs. Supporting Highwayman A - (Ammit) - Front Row - Shield - Sentinel - (All allies protected from damage for the next round.) Bobby vs. Supporting Highwayman B - Front Row - Hide (For the second time, Bobby deftly dodges the enemy for the round.) Warlen - Consumes Remedy - (All negative effects removed, Warlen -1x Remedy) Miderun - Consumes Remedy - (All negative effects removed, Miderun -1x Remedy) Although the foe stays healthy during the second round of battle, the heroes gird themselves for the fight. Vindsval calls upon the strength of the Wanderer, and brings healing to the entire party, while Annie plants her shield firmly in the enemy's way, not letting the highwaymen injure her friends for the next round. Bobby proves that there ain't no sound but the sound of his feet(hand-cannons ready to go), as he dances around his opponent, while Warlen and Miderun quickly remedy their wounds. Agreed. Originally, when I started #122, I was trying to play Lind as more of an Agent Coulson type. Then I got tired and I tried to bargain with the alien - which was not at all part of my character plan. After a few minutes, I went back to delete it, but Kintobar had already responded. Did I originally intend for Lind to be more of a wheeler-dealer? No, but if you call "mulligan" to every action that you want to change, then you're going to miss out on actually playing a character, and having fun watching them develop*. *That being said, my apologies to #122 on how stilted I've been for most of it. Speaking of that, I honestly wonder if that number of quest hostings shouldn't be raised a bit? Hosting five quests doesn't really seem as if it requires the same amount of time commitment as playing through fifteen.

QM Note: Yes - Sorry about that. Round One of Highway Holdup Warlen vs. Black Hanson - (Nightmare) - Front Row(assumed) - Special Damage (5 damage to Warlen, Warlen is bleeding) Miderun vs. Black Hanson - (Oculoid Claw) - Front Row - Special Damage (5 damage to Miderun, Miderun is bleeding) Annienal vs. Supporting Highwayman A - (Ammit) - Front Row - Critical Hit (6x2+11 = 23 damage) Bobby vs. Supporting Highwayman B - Front Row - Hide (Bobby deftly dodges the enemy for the round.) Vindsval vs. Black Hanson - Back Row - (Verkenner) Damage (15/2-3 = 5 damage) Warlen bleeding out (-5) Miderun bleeding out (-5) The first round of battle goes poorly for the heroes, as over half of them attack the strongest opponent first. Warlen and Miderun are both painfully stabbed by Black Hanson's blade, proving that he was not making idle threats. Annienal successfully lands a blow against the second highwayman, and Bobby cleverly dodges his opponent's attack. Vindsval makes a mighty rush against Hanson, but Hanson is prepared, and although he doesn't stab him, he does punch him in the face. Heroica RPG- Quest #122: Invasion of the Sheep Snatchers
Lind Whisperer replied to Kintobor's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Lind and I have the same outlook on loot - everyone contributes something to the battle, even if it's just receiving free hits for a thousand rounds. Ergo, all loot looted* should be split up equally among the party, with each member getting as exactly equal a share as possible. Sure, some people will contribute more, and some will contribute less, but no one goes home empty-handed. So you see, it's actually in Lind's best interests to be generous. That's not to say that Lind won't try to bargain for "first dibs" on loot picking, etc., and if there's an extremely rare and expensive artifact that he loots and needs, I won't promise that I'll always be following the "everything is group loot" methodology, but I try to stick to it whenever I can. *With the exception of "free-range" looting. The Chaotic Whip does have light embedded in it - did that do double damage, or did the dark cancel it out? (I know light and dark cancel each other, I'm just asking how the Whip specifically works.) -
Thanks for the ruling. It's going to be interesting to try and host another quest in the Gulch without using firearms - it's going to be interesting finishing this quest - but that's a fair ruling.

Heroica RPG- Quest #122: Invasion of the Sheep Snatchers
Lind Whisperer replied to Kintobor's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: When did I say I was keeping all the loot I stole? I thought the tradition was that parties split up all loot looted fair and square between players? (That's not to say that I wouldn't like that Invader Armor for myself, and I'd like the Xeno Whip for resale, but I considered it part of the group's loot.) -

The highwayman tipped his hat towards the Knight. "Finally, someone with class. My sincerest apologies, but I'm afraid that wouldn't be possible. It's not good business, giving up one's sole source of income for random strangers(no matter how extremely attractive they are, if I might comment without being rude). You do see how it is."

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, but I'm afraid it's not a master plot point. I was just trying to create a Old West stylized environment, and I was taking inspiration from both 17th century Spain, and classic highwaymen - both of which used (clumsy) flintlock pistols.
-
That's why I'm not instantly agreeing to change it - the image of a lone highwayman shooting off his pistols as he chases a passing carriage fits much better than him waving a wand or sword. And I wouldn't even be pushing as much as I am, except that Sandy approved the exact picture in question, as well as an weapon that was specifically named pistol, and from the wording was quite clearly implied to be one*. *Well, it's half a pistol...The point is, it couldn't be a hand-cannon. Either way, they've swapped their weapons out for the moment.
-
"I take it you don't get held up often, do you?" The highwayman apparently didn't notice Asphalt applying the Venom, or simply didn't comment. "Thank you, but we're quite well acquainted with these hills - more than you must be, since you choose to come through them." "Such strong language, from someone who first almost seemed like a gentlemen. Tsk, tsk."

"I can see that, yes." "Toys?" The highwayman chuckled, and suddenly fired, clipping Miderun's ear, and knocking off 1 health point. "No, no, far from it. But, it would be a shame to waste powder on such a boring party. Better to save it for the exciting ones." The highwayman pulled out a longsword, and nodded to his two companions, who both pulled out clubs. "I'm guessing the elf knight is also not a very sensible person?" QM Note: I'll start the battle as soon as I can get a post from Annie.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to change the picture at the moment. The picture in question was actually the example of a finished picture that I originally submitted to Sandy - and he didn't mention anything wrong with it. Also, the artifact I asked for HM approval when I first submitted my pitch on was specifically named ____-Pistol. But, if he'd like for me to change it, I'll of course be glad to do so.

I need an official rule judgement - is having the highwaymen armed with 1600s era flintlock pistols too modern? I wasn't meaning for them to be accurate weapons - I was picturing them as being meant to be a lot more "loud" than dangerous. EDIT: And only now do I see CMP's quote from Sandy. But I'd still like a ruling, since one loot item that I added, and Sandy approved, was specifically called a pistol.

"Why must women always be as unreasonable as y'all are?" The highwayman shook his head. "Any of the rest of you more sensible than she is?"

"Apologies, my good...uh...Ma'am?...but this is my toll-road, and I am afraid that I shall have to require the normal toll of you. Either surrender your lives, or everything you're carrying - quite normal, and reasonable, if I do say so myself." QM Note: Europe actually had cannons for much of the Middle Ages, they just fired rather poorly. The flintlock firing mechanism is a bit more modern, but they had working flintlocks as early - and earlier than - the 17th century. "No, ma'am, my name's Black Hanson. And apologies for being in your way and all, but, well, that's my job." QM Note: "Now, will you surrender your lives, or your valuables?"

Heroica RPG- Quest #122: Invasion of the Sheep Snatchers
Lind Whisperer replied to Kintobor's topic in The Heroica Archive
OoC: Lind drank a Mead, so he should have done 74 damage, not 37, unless I'm doing the math wrong. He should also be Encouraged. Also, Kaz is a Dark Humanoid - should the Light have also effected the roll? Jubilant at his success, and having been possibly mildly intoxicated from a drink that might perhaps have been a bit stronger than he had thought, the Munchkin broke into song, as he continued to thrash away at Kaz with the Chaotic Whip. "...Away to an alien world go you, Where looters all are well-to-do; But I'll be true to the song I sing, And live and die a looting King..." -
QM Note: Dodekube "Well, I cain't say that I've ever heard of this "Zar-Lan" fella, but Cole, now - they do say he can be one tough son-of-a-handcannon. The driver nodded. "As you say, boss." And so, the party set out! QM Note: Exactly how it was that the towering cleric was able to get on top of the coach without severely damaging the internal structure, or how he was able to sit where he did without the coach tipping over, is not entirely certain. What is certain is that it was most likely a wizard. Somehow. For several hours, the coach rolled along, past wide stretches of barren desert, long flats of dry soil like water-less oceans, fields of gravel like... "Could you get a move on with the exposition, already? It's hot out here." Right, sorry. After a few hours, the coach began to make its way up into what were either foot-hills, or very short mountains, or foot-hills of very short mountains - the party was never quite sure which one it was. The road turned from hard-packed sand to loose-packed pebbles, and the party all found it a very bumpy go of things. Just as they were all starting to cool off in the much more mildly temperatured air, the coach rounded a turn, and everyone in the party heard a loud shout hailing them from ahead. "Halt and deliver!" "Aw, durn - I guess today's the day..." What would the party do?

I'm mildly embarrassed to admit this, but I don't get the reference. I get the "Killer of Men," but not the Zarlan part...
