[ESL FB] Gov. Guilder reacts to news of King's actions
Capt Wolf replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks. Your Golden Nelissei (or whatever they're called) were partial inspiration for the pikemen. And I hope to create the facade for the full fort at some point. Thank you!- 11 replies

[ESL: KMA] The Barracks at Fuerte Unido
Capt Wolf replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Given your flair for details in your builds, that means a lot. Thanks! Thanks. Much appreciated!- 11 replies

Thanks. It's basically a beefed-up version of what I used in the triangular fort. Thanks. I'm sure the firing of the cannons do rock things, but surely it can't be much worse than being on a ship. Thanks. I was very happy that I was able to make the roof work with the watch tower on top. I had wanted to do a hip roof, but the parts didn't arrive in time. That roof has been my go-to build of late for the rustic builds, mainly because I have the pieces for it! But I'm looking forward to getting back to civilization and working with some red tile roofs again. And thanks re the plants. I always struggle with that part. But this gave me the chance to use some new lime green leaves.

[ESL: KMA] The Fort at Fuerte Unido
Capt Wolf replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks! This was my first time making round towers like this. If I'd had more pieces, I could have made them a bit bigger. As is, they are a tight fit for the guns, but you need those large caliber cannons for a shore battery. Thank you all! The triangular shape worked for the story, but it also saved me some pieces. Thanks. Yep, the light tan on the ground didn't work. As for the square blockhouse, look at the plethora of geometry in use: square blockhouse, triangular fort, round bastions. I had to have the complete set! You are too kind. Thank you!- 20 replies

The EGS seems to work fine; it's just the MRCA that needs work. Some occasional news now and then of the direction the new MRCA rules will take us would be welcomed! Or just some updated MRCA maps and trade values to use in the interim to keep the game evolving. It's much easier to be patient when we can see signs of progress.

MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio
Capt Wolf replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
And we built a fort (two, actually) before any Mardierian settlements were revealed. "Settled, to be revealed later" is the problem. It was initially presented to us as UNsettled (and unclaimed). You said that you would have picked another island if Ayrlego had already picked #11 with his first pick. Despite what you had planned, you failed to communicate that with the players, and that is really what has people upset. And if we had fully understood the rules re squatter settlements, then we wouldn't have done this. But we didn't understand fully, and that is due in part to the difficulty of knowing all the rules unless you're the one who wrote them. As clear as you think they are, they aren't. This whole episode proves that point. How have the challenges gotten in the way? We can only build so much. Real life gets in the way for all of us. I have put off builds that would advance my storylines in the past so I could participate in challenges. This time I chose the other way around, skipping the challenge because I found the collaboration and energy of the KMA builds much more fun and creative. And player driven? To my knowledge, nobody was working on finding the fountain of youth. No one was looking to plunder a treasure fleet that wasn't already doing that in the MRCA. And if Mardier is the superpower here, the Spain of the 1500s, why wasn't the treasure fleet Marderian? Why pit the factions against each other? This was your storyline, not ours. I would disagree. The game is PLAYED by the PLAYERS. Leadership should act as referees, not the main storyteller. Perhaps it's just semantics, but this game has suffered from the dark veil of secrecy from leadership from before it was even launched. The players need to be viewed as partners, not subjects. In fact, we can. Can you accept that this game is better when it uses the creativity of all involved to build a fuller, richer milieu? -
MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio

Bregir, I'm with you on this. I'm trying to find a solution to the immediate situation on the Eslandola PM right now. But note that I'd like to see a public discussion about these bigger issues by leadership. Conversations behind closed doors will just lead to more hurt feelings, IMO. -
MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio
Capt Wolf replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Faladrin, don't leave yet. We'll find a way to have fun with this game yet. ---- Ska, from the land rules: "The government of the other faction is also able to seize your property (except in the case of forts, in which case a military engagement will have to be fought." That would suggest we should fight a military engagement. Now, that doesn't mean that's what I want to do at this point, because you'd just wipe us out with the forces from your pre-existing colony. I'm currently trying to figure out if there's a reasonable island we could move the whole KMA build to. But I bring it up to point out that the rules are not as cut and dried as you suggest. Furthermore, may I ask what the purpose of this game is? Is it supposed to be a way to drive activity on the pirate forum, or is it simply a way to get others to build MOCs to illustrate a pre-conceived storyline of a few? A good game master recognizes good ideas and rewards them. I keep getting the feeling, even before this, that the challenges keep getting in the way of the players creating interesting storylines. I will bow to your interpretation of the rules, but I think it's reasonable to ask that more consideration be paid to how the players are trying to evolve the storyline in the future. There's room for all of us in here. -
MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio
Capt Wolf replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Explanation for the secret colonies appreciated. It would be nice if the running of the game was more communicative in a timely fashion, though. You could have said something as soon as you noticed the activity, but didn't. I thought the rules allowed for squatter settlements. I'll leave the resolution of these events to leadership, and hopefully those results will be communicated to us in a timely fashion. Sorry if we got too creative. Just trying to have fun playing a collaborative building game. -
MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio
Capt Wolf replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hey, I think I found the Mardier royal fortress! -
"Did you hear that?" asked the sentry. "Yeah, that was creepy," said another sentry. "Naw, it was just the wind," said a third. "Man, if you look over there, it almost looks like something man-made." Felipe took out his spyglass and studied the terrain in the distance. "Men, I think we have stumbled onto a major archaeological discovery! I think those are ruins in the jungle." "Woah, I think you're right. Those ruins must have been here for centuries, maybe a thousand years! Wait until the Corries hear about this. They'll be all over the place excavating stuff and studying things!" "We must send word to Fuerte Unido of this discovery," said Felipe, and so a messenger was dispatched with news of this historical find. * * * "Why are you shaking me?" demanded Sargento Felipe. "You were daydreaming, sir," said the soldier. "What do we do about this?" Felipe shook off the cobwebs in his head and focused on the beach. There, at the mouth of the river, was a Marderian settlement, not an ancient ruins as Felipe briefly hoped! Felipe gathered his thoughts, but then his military experience took hold. "Antonio, head back to Fuerte Unido as fast as you can. We must inform the others of this immediately. The situation on the island is not as we thought." "Yes sir!" "Wait! We will head back up-river to find a new location for the fort. Include this in your message to Capitan Alonzo." And with that Antonio gathered his gear and headed back to Fuerte Unido. Felipe took the men back up-river to find a location for the fort. And soon they did. About midway between the two settlements, Felipe found a small hill that had an excellent vantage point at a bend in the river. This location would still protect Fuerte Unido's northern flank, and would allow them to cut-off any supplies the Marderians might send to or receive from the interior of the island.

MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio
Capt Wolf replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
If only we could, but there is no mechanic for fighting it out in-game, and the MRCA maps don't even allow us to go this part of the Brick Seas yet. Furthermore, when your opponent can build 3-year-old invisible fortresses at a moment's notice, the odds are kinda stacked against us. The irony is, we could each build dozens of settlements on the island and purchase thousands of troops, and there's nothing we could do. We're bound by the act of collective storytelling at this point and nothing more. -

MARDIER COLONY La Isla de Medio
Capt Wolf replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I would like to echo everything the Elostirion said. Perhaps the most frustrating part of this is that the players of Eslandola have created some of the most interesting in-game events in the entire 9+ months of the game, inspiring collaborative building and spurring build reactions from other factions. We finally got the game doing what it's supposed to be doing, and it feels like we were just told to stop. I don't mean because of the in-game reaction by Mardier; that's to be expected and welcomed! No, it's the feeling that we shouldn't mess with any NPCs, because they get 3 moves to our 1. It feels like we should just leave the island and go back to building our little isolated settlements and not really interact. I was already questioning the value of building ships and participating in the MRCAs; if the NPC nations and pirates are just going to get 3 ships for every one of ours (that appears to be the established ratio), what's the point? -

With the initial settlement of Fuerte Unido secure, Capitan Alonzo now had to look at the long term defense of the settlement. Although the south bay was the best anchorage of Isla de Victoria, the settlement was positioned at the narrowest part of the island (less than 30 miles across!). As such, Fuerte Unido was susceptible to an attack from the north if Mardier were to land troops on the northern shore. So, Capitan Alonzo sent out Sargento Felipe and the troops on construction duty once more, to build a small fort on the coast directly north. Imagine Felipe's shock when, after he crossed the ridge that forms the southern backbone of the island and followed a river to the northern coast, that there was already a settlement there! Mardier had made more than a claim to the island; it already had a settlement! And from the looks of it, it had been there for awhile. This was an unexpected development! Felipe sent one of his men back to Fuerte Unido to report this urgent information, but he did not abandon his mission. Sargento Felipe and his men backtracked up-river and found a good location for the blockhouse, on a hill at a bend in the river, perhaps 15 miles from both Fuerte Unido and the Mardier settlement. This would still protect Fuerte Unido's northern flank, and could cut-off any supplies the Marderians might send to or receive from the interior of the island. It took much less time to build than Fuerto Unido (which included a blockhouse at one corner). But this blockhouse could better stand alone, with musket slits on the lower level, and gunports for 3 cannons. Additionally, Fortaleza Victoria had a watch tower built into the roof. Capitan Alonzo would be pleased with the job, thought Felipe. Perhaps he would even be promoted to have a command of his own, here at Fortaleza Victoria. Edit: Please note that the text above has been revised to note the discovery of the Marderian settlement and subsequent corrected location of Fortaleza Victoria.

I love the cutaway of the ship to show the action. Good concept, well executed! And a fitting tribute to those glorious Eslandolan sailors who gave their all. -
[ESL FB] "King of the Colonies!"
Capt Wolf replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Fun build! Good dialog and good tavern scene overall. I must try out that SNOT floor technique sometime. And as someone else noted, good job with the half-timbered wall! And while the lanterns themselves are simple, I like their placement in the build; it's a good detail that helps define the roof that isn't there. The natives are restless! Perhaps the pig will survive, but will the king?- 5 replies

Another fine jungle build from you! Excellent portrayal of the column marching through the jungle. And on the diplomatic front, it's good to see that we have an ally against Mardier! If you head to Fuerte Unido, Capitan Alonzo and his men will still be there to greet you. Welcome to the fight!
