  1. Hey, I wouldn't be too hard on Huw, when I bought my first CCBS Constraction set back in 2011 I frequently made mistakes like that when building, even after looking at the instructions. Nowadays I consider myself an expert CCBS builder. And before anybody asks, the fact that I have moderator roles at Brickset doesn't come into this, it was just something I wanted to mention ;-) Anyway, I wonder when we could expect close up pictures of the sets, it seems slightly odd that Nuremberg news and pics is a bit less than usual. I am seriously wondering if we might not get anything else Bionicle related until New York...
  2. Just a quick question: I am thinking of picking up the Ultra Copter, particularly for the armoured Agent and AntiMatter, but the price tag is making me hesitate, as is the fact I also want to get the Robo Shark from the summer sets. Should I go for the Ultra Copter and perhaps BL the Robo Shark in the summer, or wait until the AntiMatter's portal hideout is released so I can get everything I want in one set (which could potentially be cheaper than the copter)? Am interested to hear thoughts especially from people who have the Ultra Copter.
  3. For anybody hoping that Ninjago will bring more Dark Blue and Spring Yellowish Green to the CCBS palette, I think this picture of the dragon that was said to have the said parts might dismiss that. It is the same dragon as the big brick built one where the speculation came from. The shells look suspiciously gunmetal to me, but I hope it's just the lighting: http://i.imgur.com/fd933ls.jpg Now I have had a bit of a closer look at the summer sets, I have to say that that view of Skull Scorpio makes it look worse than it did for me in the prelims. The trans-orange looks out of place on almost all the sets, but I am loving the ribcage piece (it looks suspiciously like the Savage Planet armour add ons though, or at least it appears to be in the same style). Does Skull Grinder have that mask with nostrils that was shown in a club magazine? It's a bit hard to tell, but I really want to see that mask in the plastic. By far the best bit though is that this wave looks to be far cheaper than I had originally anticipated. Looking at the box sizes above, the £13 price is definitely right for all except the Skull Grinder set. Edit: oh yeah, it's a bit frustrating that you can't see Basher's head at all. He's posed like he's camera shy or something ;-P
  4. The only thing that really interests me with the Sky Castle is the winged horse, and even then only for the wings (not really a fan of the Friends style horses). I think I will be heading for BL for those wings.
  5. These look very nice from what I can make out (trans-bright green bones courtesy of Skull Slicer, so I take back the less than positive vibes I said about him earlier... They look fantastic!). I really need to see some individual shots or close-ups though, my phone really doesn't like zooming in on pictures and I can hardly make out any detail. I miss by big computer screen sometimes! Slightly related, I think the Ninjago Master Wu dragon coming this summer may be coming with white small beast feet (judging by prelims that I saw, should see tomorrow I guess)... Might be a better foot colour for Protector of Ice perhaps? EDIT: I really should read all the conversation before jumping in, but at least my PoI suggestion is new I guess ;-)
  6. Interesting find, and seeing that one in French made me go and look for any English version. And yes, the promotion is also in the UK (so presumably all of Europe), and best of all, it's free with any purchase of any value. Though I will say, sorely disappointed with the blue Skull Spider, I was expecting some new recolour of it. Still, definitely going to grab one for myself, though I will only need one.
  7. Now I've had a look at them, I don't think they are that bad at all. I'll offer some of my thoughts, though I will be keeping an open mind and hope to see more finalised designs from Nuremberg: Skull Warrior: I quite like this one, sure it's a rather generic humanoid build (I for one do not mind humanoid builds), but I feel that it is done quite well. It pulls off the "fearsome archer" look very well, though not sure how I feel about having the skeletal components being black. Skull Slicer: probably my least favourite. I do not like those blades used here, they just don't excite me that much. Personally, I think this one actually suffers from being too thin. Skull Basher: For some reason, this reminds me of a skeletal Pyrox, just better. I have a bit of a soft spot for Minotaur style builds and characters, and I am all for getting more purple an trans-purple. Just hoping it is not trans-pink though. I think I can just make out the torn cloth style pieces here. Skull Scorpio: Contrary to many, I actually like this one, though I really would have liked to see the Chima rib pieces in white rather than black (though it is nice to see it in a colour other than trans-light blue). The tail could benefit from some simplification and be turned into more classic scorpion style tail. Skull Grinder: I was really hoping for trans-red here as I am a little bored of trans-neon orange. Otherwise he looks like a pretty decent humanoid style build. Definitely getting this. Hopefully some better pictures will provide some clearer views of the torso parts of these sets, and either confirm my initial suspicions or get me to change my mind on these.
  8. Oh my, the one day I have to go to hospital and all this happens! Can't seem to find the prelims so would someone be able to PM them to me? But look at it this way: I wouldn't pass any judgement until pics come from Nuremberg or New York (which is what I'm waiting for). The skeletal pieces people are describing sound potentially very interesting and am really looking forward to seeing some finalised versions (I don't know why, but the description of ribcages do remind me of the ribcages of 2008). Though the torn cloth type pieces still somewhat remain a mystery, but I can see it working really well with the described skeletal pieces, if they look anything like what I am thinking of.
  9. London Toy Fair is tomorrow, so I imagine we might be getting set descriptions of some kind from it. These are supposed to be released a couple of months after the release of the Age of Ultron sets (didn't someone say May?), so it doesn't surprise me that we haven't heard much from this theme... yet
  10. Yes way, it's true Anyway, thinking over the contents of the sets again, I really kinda wish the Porsche 911 GT Finishing Line didn't come with two similar Porsches. Granted, they are slightly different in design (look at the front) and livery, but they're both Porsche 911 GT's and they look to have a very similar build. I really feel like it could have been an opportunity to throw something like a McLaren MP4-12C in along with one Porsche (McLaren only gets one road car when the others get at least two), rather than two Porsches. It just kind of looks very same-y to me. I'm sure anyone who's watched Top Gear knows the typical Clarkson joke that "all Porsche 911's look identical". So really, it's amazing LEGO managed to make the two Porsche 911 GT's only look very similar
  11. Interesting insights VBBN. It's always interesting to see what the judges thought about each winning model and how the contest went in general. That's understandable (it's not the first time that MOC has been described as "incredible steed, but okay rider"). The steed was actually built first but I thought I should add a rider as just a 4 legged beast on it's own wouldn't make sense as a villain. The rider's body was literally recycled from another project and the head - well I have no excuse for that except trying to squeeze in an NPU with a Scarox face as it's jaw But I was surprised and pleased Mechan'Rex made the grade, gauging by Flickr popularity it was actually less favourited than most of my other entries, hence the wondering why that was picked ahead of more popular models (plus, the photography of it was a little sub-par). But it was a model I enjoyed building, so that's all that matters. It would have been interesting to see who the winners would have been if it was up to a community vote instead. But anyway, that's enough rambling from me, thanks for doing this contest and hope there are more like this in the future. For now, I'll probably just give some of my LDD entries the "real life" treatment
  12. This talk of leaks and how we don't have any yet reminds me of the days when I didn't have an online presence, I would always go and check the LEGO aisles in Tesco (or other supermarket or toy store) every week for new stuff then be surprised at what I found when new stuff did arrive. In fact, it'd be nice to just have a solid release date and some prices for things, then go into the LEGO Store on that day and find out what those things looked like exactly. But on the flipside, having picture leaks allows me to plan for future MOC's and part purchases, so really, I have a reason for having leaks and a reason for not having leaks. Having said that, I still feel kinda guilty taking a peek at leaked preliminaries - I view it as a guilty pleasure though
  13. The summer sets all sound very interesting (and some nice mockups also I must say - these villains definitely have me excited (and have inspired me to make some MOC-ups of my own)! I am hoping Trans-Red is used, it is a lovely yet underused colour and would love some bones/shells in the colour), but I have a good friend heading to the London Toy Fair on Tuesday and he's agreed to get somebody (if not him) to get a good look at the summer Bionicle sets (if they're there). I might be able to get some more concrete descriptions of the sets to back up what has already been mentioned, ahead of the Nuremberg and New York toy fairs coming soon
  14. If they ever make an Advanced Models McLaren F1 (perhaps even the GTR version), I will tell LEGO to take all my money for one. Well, I've been a passenger in a McLaren F1 GTR once, so a LEGO model of said car would have a real significance other than it's my second most favourite car and the fact that McLaren's Technology Centre isn't that far from where I live As for my favourite car, the Veyron, I could see there being a minifig scale one in future waves, but going by the fact that all 8 of my diecast model Veyrons cost a fortune relative to their size (I could never find one made by any of the more mass-market diecast model car makers), I am willing to bet that getting a license with Bugatti is expensive (or at least it used to be) and a LEGO Veyron won't happen. Even if LEGO did negotiate a license, it will probably result in them producing a minifig scale version of the rumoured "Super-Veyron" rather than the infamous 2005 Veyron. But who knows? And as for the prices, maybe they're not so bad on reflection, I just thought some of the models might be a little on the small side for the price points. But I think I need to see their piece counts and in the flesh before I can judge their value for money. And I do hope that this theme is more than a one-wave wonder, as there's an almost infinite amount of cars for them to create (you could get a couple more waves out of just Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche) (though I can't be sure this will get more than one wave, they share their section of set numbers with Scooby Doo and Jurassic World).
  15. I'm likely the only one in my family who buys LEGO or is involved in it to any sort of degree. In fact, a few years ago my parents wanted me to stop buying the stuff and go into a Dark Age, but although I wasn't buying very much at the time, I never stopped buying LEGO, and now I'm buying more than ever now I know there are other people like me and it's definitely not something to be ashamed of. Even my parents are more supportive now, though their excuse for not buying me LEGO now is "I don't know what sets you have nowadays". I don't have a partner or any kids and I don't really know a lot about my family aside from direct relations, so I could be wrong about the first sentence. But to balance it out I suppose, I now have a few very good friends who are immensely into LEGO (including some who are well-known in the AFOL community), so at least I have people to share the passion with and talk LEGO without getting "What are you talking about?" whenever I say "SNOT brick" or "CCBS"
  16. We have some GBP prices for the Speed Champions sets, courtesy of Argos (search Speed Champions): LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder, 458 Italia GT2: £12.99 each 75911 McLaren-Mercedes Pit Stop £29.99 75912 Porsche 911 GT Finishing Line £39.99 75913 F14T and Scuderia Ferrari Truck £79.99 More expensive than I had anticipated if I'm honest, I expected the little cars to cost about £10 each. Oh well, I'm still purchasing them for my LEGO supercar garage even though they are not 100% accurate (before I properly got into LEGO, I had a hobby collecting model cars so I'm fussy about detail ). I'm wondering how well they'll go with my more accurate minifig scale Bugatti Veyron and McLaren F1 MOC's...
  17. I don't know if these have already come about or been mentioned, but we now have GBP prices for the Elves sets courtesy of Argos! 41071 Aira's Creative Workshop £9.99 41072 Naida's Spa Secret £17.99 41073 Naida's Epic adventure Ship £24.99 41074 Azari and the Magical Bakery £24.99 41075 The Elves' Treetop Hideaway £39.99 41076 Farran and the Crystal Hollow £12.99 These could probably be used to estimate other prices. I am surprised especially at how little the Elves Treetop Hideaway costs, I was expecting that to cost a lot more. I might actually pick it up at that price...
  18. I heard that the Series 4 Mixels are starting to crop up in places (I think I heard about them being out in Poland, and now the US). I'm just wondering - has anybody sighted them in the UK yet? Brand Stores here have put both series 2 and Series 3 out early in the past, I'm wondering if they are doing the same again with Series 4. I'm probably heading out to a Brand Store next week to meet a friend and pick up some sets, but it'd be handy to know if they've been spotted anyhow.
  19. Has anybody tried replacing the silver with gold on the Protector of Fire to match better with Tahu's colour scheme? I've been thinking about trying to free up some silver piston armours so I can give them to Onua without having to purchase too many extra silver piston armours? I'd give it a go myself but I don't have the Protector of Fire just yet, but I have all the pieces ready to modify him when I do get him. I would give silver to Kopaka as well, if only his printed chestplate wasn't gold in colour... that silver Brain Attack armour is really bugging me considering it's the only silver armour on him, it would have been so much better if it was cast in white.
  20. I was pondering over this thought the other day: they are mostly reusing Dino 2012 moulds for the Jurassic World dinosaurs, however I have a lot of doubt in my mind that they will reuse the Coelophysis mould for the Dilophosaurus in the Dilophosaurus Ambush set. Unfortunately I can see LEGO going ahead and doing that (A Coelophysis featured in the leaked dinos I think? Can't see where else it would fit), even though the Coelophysis mould does not look anything like a Dilophosaurus (for the fact it's completely missing the defining feature of a Dilophosaurus, the very feature that it's named for - two head crests). But I'm really hoping LEGO will issue a new mould, even a Dilophosaurus head for the raptor body, to please my inner palaeontologist. I'm actually surprised nobody else has mentioned this, but maybe that's just me being a bit of a dinosaur geek (I'm still waiting for appropriately sized LEGO Velociraptors) Otherwise, I am really looking forward to picking up all the sets in this theme, if only for all the dinosaurs. Hopefully we'll hear more about the sets come the Toy Fairs starting next week.
  21. Well, congratulations to the overall winner, but like many people it seems, they've gone for the "biggest is best" frame of mind which kinda overshadows all those clever and excellent smaller builds. I like a big build and I do get impressed by them, and it's a very well done big build, but I do feel that choosing big builds counts those with a much smaller budget out. I do have enough to build big, but it'd be an absolute mess of colours, so that's why I didn't build big. My other criticism would be the lack of LDD builds represented in the 36 or so people that won. Out of all my entries, Mechan'Rex was kind of the last one I expected to get picked especially when many of my other entries, many of them LDD builds, were far more popular, more aesthetically pleasing and interesting (yes, I'm very much a self-critical type). But I'm not complaining anyhow! But anyway, I'm glad for the winner, and being female myself, I suppose it's nice to see a female builder win overall. Though I will admit that the statement "girls can build Bionicle too" kinda threw me a bit, girls have always been able to build Bionicle of course
  22. Continued my Bionicle 2015 collection today and bought Pohatu Master of Stone (I did want Tahu but strangely, The Entertainer I went to didn't get any of those in even though they had multiples of the other 12 Bionicle sets). I also bought the Ninjago Lava Falls set a couple of days ago. Now to find time to build them.
  23. Like many, I tend to accumulate my points and save them for a large purchase (I recently used £25 of points on a £160 purchase), though I've never really accumulated more than about £50 of them. Otherwise, I might use 100 points here and there to get "free" shipping on a small S@H order that I needed to place, for example for some PaB. Right now, I have £10 sitting in my VIP account. A few more purchases and then I'll probably redeem them on my next big spend. Utterly envious of those who can accumulate enough to get a "free" modular or UCS set though and still have spare points afterwards though. I wish I could spend that much on LEGO to do that! Though, if I could get VIP points on all my Bricks and Pieces orders, I'd have a few more to spend!
  24. I can also testify to this. I'm still missing Tahu, Pohatu and 4 Protectors. So much for being able to buy all 13 at once like I'd originally planned. I do already have a duplicate of Protector of Earth though just so I could give him a mace (pics later), give my Onua trans-purple upper arms and give my self-MOC another accessory - an arm ending in a gatling gun (pics of that too if anybody's interested). Mind you, I shouldn't grumble, I bought an extra LOSS face from BL (so my trans-light blue Skull Spider queen could have a face) and that ended up turning into a fairly big order for 2015 Bionicle parts to MOC with. Just got to wait for that to arrive to get my next Bionicle 2015 fix Still getting a duplicate of Onua though - there's so many good parts in that set that it's better to buy that set as a whole
  25. The advice already given here is sound information for someone starting out with CCBS (it is a lot easier to learn than "Bionicle System"), but I should say this: building with CCBS in LDD is much harder than building with it in real life (it involves a lot of fiddling with the hinge tool to get a piece in exactly the right position, and prepare to have to rotate pieces off of the main model for complex builds). I recommend you start out with the 2011 basic Hero models to get started (this Brickset page shows them and it's easy to pull the instructions from there) as they're relatively simple builds, then as you start to get familiar, try building one of these. and then, if you want to look at complex techniques, I've got some complex CCBS LDD builds to download on my Brickshelf that you could study and incorporate some of the techniques into your own builds. Hope this helps!
