Beautiful! I really like the different coloured plates under the trans-blue tiles to create the illusion of depth. The rockwork and the mottling on the towers is well intergrated too, and the cage with the skeleton is a nice touch! The only thing i'd add would be another layer or two of plates on the ground, just to build it up a bit from the edge of the moat/lake. ps. Yeah, dark Kaliphlin should totally become a thing! Corrupted brigands! Haunted ruins! Vile creatures from beneath the sands! (There has to be more than just sandworms?)

Kaliphlin Guild: Homepage, Sign-up and Discussion

Wow, some awesome new (and completed) builds... sweet stuff DaMaximus and Kayne, nice to see the epic battles ramping up for the finale! Thanks Kai... i know what you mean about feeling swamped with GoH backstory and mocs to catch up on btw - try 3 months of being away. I've just managed to finish the last of the post-Brickvention sorting marathon (phew), now i can get cracking on some new stuff for challenge 6! -
Thanks, but it's not an original idea of mine. It's actually quite an old trick - i've seen it around on heaps of mocs! Aw thanks Legonardo, such high praise! You'd be welcome in Kaliphlin anytime - it's never to late to switch, you know!

Agreed with the above comments, your castle does have a very solid look - the only thing that i feel is missing is a hill to put it on, with some outer fortifications! But that would probably make your moc unfeasably large. I love the double "D" shaped towers in front, and the attention to detail in the courtyard is great. I'm looking forward to your other round 6 builds!

Wow, lovely stuff gedren_y! I love the white and blue highlights, and the custom peices that you've used really enhance the build. The shuttered grille windows look great too. You have a good eye for composition in your shots too, but the lack of focus and attention to depth of feild let you down a bit. I hope that the herbologists are behaving themselves and not trampling over some of the more fragile mountain specimens? It also looks like someone picked up Sir Barold's gear after his death defending the causeway, we shall have to send an investigator to look into that - his family will want his effects back! Great build, i look forward to seeing more of the Nestlands!

Cobblecrook Cottage & Haldur's Crypt - Dark Isle Saga: Chapter
Gabe replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Guilds of Historica
Beautiful work DC, the muted palette you've used for these is lovely, gives it an almost sepia-tone look that fits in well with a story set in the past. I'm loving all the details like the covered well, the sparse, windblown trees, the crooked windowsills etc. The roof on the crypt is beautiful as well! Can't wait for chapter two... -
:o I hope the Jarl managed to escape his ambushers/pursuers! Is there any more information about where he was last sighted? Kaliphlin will send trackers to help locate and rescue him i'm sure!

No worries mate, glad you like it. Haha, thanks deGothia! I'm just stoked that i got to finish my ship at last, it had been hanging around the studio half-finished for ages! Thanks Niku, glad you like it! If you are interested, there are a couple more pics of the island on my Flickr, also, if you search the Brickvention group on Flickr there are a few more there as well. Cheers Masa! Argh, that foliage... so hard to transport. I spent hours reattaching/rearranging the bits that had fallen off during bump-in. At one point i wondered if i was doing flower arranging rather than Lego...! Cheers Ecclesiastes! It sure is nice to be back. The compass rose was a bit of a last minute addition - it filled up that corner nicely. I'd tried a compass rose before in a much earlier buildwith mixed results, so i was keen to try it out again. Thanks Kai! Now for challenge 6!

That's a huge battle scene Damaximus, one of the biggest one's i've seen! I can relate to how difficult photographing large scenes like that is - getting everything in shot is hard enough, but also evenly lighting everything can be a challenge too. Have you thought about editing out the background sheeting in one or two of your best shots? I really like the second image - the one from the top of the gaurd tower (which looks to have a few loose joins in it... oops!), but the crumpled sheet is very distracting. I also like that you've included a small section of rockwork at the left of the entrance to the city... it adds a much needed element of naturalism to the scene, as well as helping to define the edges of the stage.

Thanks all for your kind words about my ship! Here are some more pics of the island part of the display, for those who are interested: Hmm, that face looks familar... Yohoho, it's a pirate's life for me... Close up of the pirate tavern and covered walkway to the lighthouse path. The local lighthouse, with some familar architecture. ;) A wild genie appears! And a last pulled back shot, which was kindly edited by Kyle Collard (Lazer Blade on Flickr), while i was busy at Brickvention. :) Neither did the Athenians! Nocturnian galleys might use slaves below deck, but us Kaliphlin earn enough from oil and trade that we can afford to pay for skilled oarsmen. ;) ps. I would also like to note that Tazmaniac was at Brickvention as well and won a commendation for his expanded "Gaurded Inn", so GoH was well represented at the event! :)

Ok, so i've finally got my ship into it's own topic now.... click on the link for more pics of her amid my Brickvention display! I also decided on a name - "The Basilisk's Gaze". :) Right, now it's back to sorting for me... only 20 litres to go and i can start building something else! ;) -
Here is the latest addition to the Kaliphlin fleet... the "Basilisk's Gaze", so called as the approach of this monster can petrify the enemy! ;) There is room for 26 oarsmen below decks, and plenty of archers up top. Despite it's size, it is highly manuverable and fast under full sail. Here we see her patrolling a small island off the coast of Kaliphlin, making sure the pirates pay thier taxes etc... ;) I actually built this display for Brickvention, a Lego convention that was held in Melbourne last weekend. It was lucky enough to win best in show! Which kinda blew my mind, in a good way of course! :D Anyway, i hope you have enjoyed looking at my latest ship, c&c is very welcome! :)

Fellow melbournite here too! Welcome to EB, i look forward to seeing your builds! :)

Nice army of skellies you've got there CBB! :) Not that a road blockade will do much to halt travel throughout the wither woods... the dune skiffs and river boats will just pick up the slack. But as for your army, i wouldn't let them travel too far from the road... there are many dangers awaiting those that don't understand the local terrain. ;)

Haha, thanks man! Not sure about naming her after myself though, it doesn't sound very Kaliphlin... ;) Cheers! Reminds me, i must go and check out how the guild scores stand atm - last i saw, there was a very narrow margin bewteen Avalonia, Kaliphlin and Mitgardia... Thanks rogueang! I am slowly getting through the pics, i have a lot of background to edit out. :P The "fortress" is actually an old shipwreck that's been turned into a pirate tavern... Erudhalion is just paying a visit to a nearby lighthouse. ;) Thanks Dr. Rod! BV was a blast, i'm still coming down from it! :D Thanks gedren_y! I recycled the idea, yes, but basically it was a brand new build. There were elements of my first turtle island that i wasn't happy with (like the eyes and the stubby neck), so i modified and extended the previous design. Yes, every ship needs a name! My partner just suggested "Drake's Revenge", which also sounds pretty cool... Aw, i am sorry that i've been away for so long. Health stuff can be so boring. :( But i'm looking forward to getting stuck into challenge 6 now, once i've sorted myself from BV of course. I've also got a half-built Petrea uni lecture theatre sitting on my table to finish too! Thanks btw, i'm glad you like my ship! :) Thanks robuko! I'm looking forward to redeeming myself in the final challenge too. It sure is nice to be back. :) Thanks Masa, glad you like my ship! I was very lucky to score some cotton duck material from Spotlight (Aussie haberdashery store) that is pretty much an exact match for TLG's dark red; that is what i've used for the sails. (The weave even looks similar to Lego sails) I too am eagerly awaiting the LoTR corsair ship... i wonder when we'll get to see pics of it? :3 Now i better catch up with all the going's on around the guilds... what is this nonsense about Antyria invading the Wither woods? :/ -

Hey all; sorry i've been absent for so long, i feel really bad about letting you guys down in the last couple of challenges. Life just overtook me in the last few months of 2012, i also had some health challenges to overcome, but i'm back on board now. :) I haven't even been looking at Eurobricks for ages, so i have a lot of threads to catch up with! Anyway, i didn't want to return completely empty handed, so here is a new Peregrinian warship for Kaliphlin. I built it as part of a display for Brickvention - having to build something to meet that deadline was one of the things which really improved my wellbeing over the last 6 weeks, which was great. i'll post it in a new thread once i've edited all the pics. Hope all of you are doing well! :) ps. I still haven't decided on a name for her yet, so any suggestions are very welcome. I know Robuko has already suggested a couple - "The Kathryn" and "Liberty of Darconius" are the frontrunners at the moment! -
Sorry it's taken me so long to get around to commenting on these beauties Legonardo! I have to say i'm really enjoying your emerging style with these microscales - they feel very impressionistic. I like the fact that as a viewer you both instantly recognise what they are meant to be, but also can find surprising elements within the composition. The presentation is great too, especially the muted, washed out tones in the stronghold one. Great stuff!

Ah yes, good point - ibis are indeed mainly waders rather than aquatic birds. I have actually seen Australian ibis land on water near large breeding colonies, but they don't tend to hang around in there too long. Anyway, thanks for picking up that inconsistancy! Cheers Kayne! Yes, i thought a little bit of a light interval was in order after all the destruction mocs of challenge 4...

Very elegant reconstruction, LL. That's a clever technique used for the animal friezes too. Lovely work!
-
Sweet little boat Buurli_burri, the brick-built sail really makes it stand out. If i may make one suggestion, it would be to build up the sides a bit more - she's looking very low in the water! I agree, building boats and ships is pretty cool - (Speaking of which, i ought to get back to mine... ) i hope to see some more from you!
-
Thanks everyone for your kind words. Glad that some ppl are liking the ibis too - i was going to make it a duck but ended up trying for something a bit more adventurous. Besides, those MMV ducks always looked huge to me!
-
Cool figs and i like your wind-tattered flag idea. I think your mountain fortress is a nice and compact design too, although it would benifit from some more height. Best of luck!
-
Wow, now that's an packed moc... nearly 60 minifigs, nice work! Lots of variety in your minifig posing and combos really bring this scene to life. I noticed you included the old wolfpack wagon too, good to see that even bandits obey deGothia in Benoic... The house and shed in the background give the dio much needed hight and central focus, and are the perfect setting for this scene too - lovely work!
-
Thanks DaMaximus, glad you like it. Yep, this the first time i've had the opportunity to use the shield technique you taught me, works a treat, thanks! Cheers Cpt Settle. Avalonia is pretty easy to get a feel for tbh - a lot of it feels very natural and of course there are plenty of ace builders in the guild showing the way! Thanks deGothia, so pleased that you like it. I'd had this little build on my mind for a couple of weeks now, just glad i got it done before the wedding! Speaking of which - i assumed the wedding was on hold until this nuisance of a rogue mage and his elementals is dealt with? Or is it happening sooner? For now, i have to rally the troops at home for the coming battles with that scum Revolword, but after that i am free to honour social engagements... (In other words, i'd love an invite if the timing works out!) Thanks! Thankfully not so many tiles to unpick here either, thank goodness! Thanks soccerkid! I made the barge first, then figured it needed a little vig to go with it. Glad you like it!

A very interesting backstory, DaMaximus, especially the links to Historica. Nice map too, although i find Eilandica rather confusing! I do like the idea of dragonriders, best of luck in the judging!
