Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Gideon was right, i was talking about 2x2 inverted tiles, but as it turned out i used the 2x2 jumper plates for the ceiling as well, i'm quite pleased with the diamond pattern. The inverted tiles are expensive (being a relitively new part), but i managed to get a lot of them in a group order for a very reasonable price. It's certainly nice to be able to really go to town with them. The round central apeture is just 2x2 bricks and plates attached to piggybacked Hinge Plate 1 x 4 Swivel Top / Base Complete Assembly . The whole apeture is attched to the frame at the front arch, and basically it covers the technic armiture that all the light bley beams are attached to. The towers are a different beast altogether and are based on a technique that i saw someone use to create a rocket module - sadly i can't find the original images to reference but i'll chase them up later when i have more time. Basically there is an 8 sided core inside the towers based on hinge plates and clips. The odd shaped wedge plates i've used for the towers are Wedge, Plate 4 x 9 without Stud Notches . I've also added technic axles and poles between the segments to stabilise them, although they are still a bit wobbly! Anyway, here are some more pics as of this morning. Still a bit to do today, but most of the structural stuff is over, thank goodness! Shot of the ceiling - hopefully makes my previous description a bit clearer. Outside of the (mostly) finished dome. Ah cool! A week is not long at all, but sometimes a pressure build can produce inspired work, so best of luck! I'm sure you will impress. Sometimes i find that it helps to remember that most ppl looking at your display aren't going to be picking it apart the way other builders might on the forums, so you can be a bit looser in your approach. Thanks Gedren! Looking forward to seeing your next Nestlands build. -
Wonderful builds and story to match, very entertaining! The forced perpective of the mountain range is my favourite part of your builds, but all of them work really well and are full of interesting features. (Like the plant in the shrine, or the scroll stacks in the library etc) Your colour combinations are excellent too - that entance way to the theives guild is so vibrant. If i have one small criticism, it's that the action scene of Dugal cutting out the bandit's tongue is a bit static. Experimenting with minifig posing could have made the scene much more dramatic and compelling.

Thanks Torgar! Yeah i can't wait to see it finished either - i only have 2 more days of building before i have to pack it up and take it to the Seymour show. I wish i could manage to be more orginised, but i'm always building heaps at the last minute it seems... Thanks Ska, glad you like it! Yeah, the inside of the dome is a little interesting - i have managed to get a lot of those tiles with studded backs (in tan and dark bley) recently so i'm planning on using them. However i've decided against a full "double-shell" dome - it's just too tricky right now. Part of the ceiling will be the inside of the outer shell, and part will be attached to the lower beams in a star shaped pattern around the central apeture - ugh this description makes no sense but i'll post pics later to hopefully show you what i mean! Yeah i know what you mean NM, i love WIP's for that reason too - also i like to have a stickybeak at how other ppl set up their work area, their order of tasks etc. I love your intro shot at the lakeside - just beautiful, looks like your new camera works just fine! I'll go and have a look at the whole entry today. Thanks Gideon! Ooh, are you working towards a show or something too? Which LUG are you in? -
Your goblins really are quite cute, in a grusome sort of way! They have loads of personality, and the studded heads make me think that they must have the wartiest skin ever. I can see this fellow being some kind of Bilbo Baggins of the goblin world, about to embark upon an unexpected adventure!

Those stained glass windows are just masterful! I love the lion window, you should do windows for all the lego crest designs, that'd be amazing. Have fun showing off your wonderful work at STEAM!

Ooh, grats on your new camera! Hope you can get your pics up soon, i'm looking forward to seeing them. The advent calendar idea sounds great, i'd love to contribute something for it - small and quick sounds good after what i'm currently working on. Nice find kabel, thanks for the heads up! Those pics are great. Feel free to make some Kaliphlin figs, i've noticed that most of the ppl on GoH dabble in/visit the other guilds from time to time. ~~~~~~~ Few more WIP shots of my lecture theatre build - i've nearly topped out now! This was from a couple of days ago Pic taken this morning. Got to get onto the dome cladding now - tricky cause it has to be visible from both inside and outside. It's doing my head in! ps. If you guys are sick of all these WIP pics please let me know! I post them cause i do care about getting the input of other guildies and i can get a bit stir crazy working on this day after day on my ownsome. -
Very nice fig and intro, Candia! The warg pulling the laden cart is inspired.

The Settlers go to Historica – part I: Pinewood cutter
Gabe replied to Yooha's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice! That's a sweet roof technique for the shed. -
Wow - you've got some great atmosphere in your shots! Creating underwater scenes in Lego is a real challange, but the way your Drakarkan are posed they really look as though they are swimming. The heads look amazing too with thier protroubent looking, glowing eyes - customs i take it?

Lovely character intro Buurli! Lots of nice touches in your tavern build, but what really stands out for me is the feasting group at the trestle table - a wonderful little scene of revelry and abundance.

Thanks gedren, that sounds like a really neat technique! I only have a couple of those whips, sadly, but I'll have to try it out. Thanks Kai! I love all the sand colours, they provide us builders with much needed tints without getting too pastel-y. I only wish i had more than a handful of sand red elements. Thanks NM! The students have a couple of options - they can sit on the tiers between the stairs, or for the magic users who can teleport (or for students with flight capability), there will also be an upper gallery. There is also floor space if things get crowded. I'm thinking of making the rear alcoves cushion storage areas, where students will have access to something comfortable to sit on. I look forward to seeing your uni tavern btw - great choice! Ooh that's a cool idea - sandworm dances, water festivals, winter solstice in July for those northern types , lots of scope in there! Or what about a university open day? -

Thanks Soccerkid! Yeah the green foliage is more of a placeholder element at the moment so it does look a bit simple - i'm stil trying out various colours and configurations. My original idea was to have vines twinning up the columns, but with the addition of the butressess and stairways it all started to look a bit visually messy. I'll certainly revisit it - for now i think i need to work on more structural issues! And yeah i'm interested as well about how i'm going to pull this off lol Thanks Masa! I have a few ideas, true, but i'm always open to suggestions or advice! Sounds good Ska, i'd be in that! Sorry this project has taken so long btw. -
A fascinating little vig and nice to see no snow in a Mitgardia moc! Like others have mentioned, the base looks a bit slapdash and i'm not completely sold on the cotton wool either - not to say i don't think the effect works as steam, but more that it looks odd next to the flat blue tiles of the water? Maybe a bit more variation in your water effects would intergrate the cotton wool better. The sideways rockwork is lovely with it's overhanging foliage, and i like that your trees are of different hights - it looks very natural. However it would have been cool to see a couple of brick-built trees amongst your "ready-made" pine trees as well. Anyway, i really like this compact little build, a thermal spring scene is a great idea!

Collecting the Pieces - The Venom of a Red Scorpion
Gabe replied to Gideon's topic in Guilds of Historica
You certainly have an eye for excellent composition Gideon! This moc is simple yet highly effective, the muted and restricted colour scheme drawing the eye irrisistably to the action. The columns with thier differing hights and stages of decay could have stepped right out of a romantic era painting, and the groundwork with it's irregular base is perfect. Love it!- 23 replies

The Very Short Tale Of The Nocturnian Spy
Gabe replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Guilds of Historica
Ooh, nice work DC! Some really lovely flowing lines on the creature, and the face is great. The out of focus shots are literally dripping with menace. Not sure what kind of spy flies thier own colours tho - clearly not a very bright (or long-lived) one! -
Maaaaybe? No-one would ever suspect them of being highly trained assasians, which could play to thier advantage!
-
Great idea to show vignettes from all the guilds in the one build - you certainly packed a lot in! The black mage in his underground lair (an ice cavern?) is my fav part of the build, looking appropriately foreboding! Yama and Shiro look like they have a few issues to sort out with each other - a microcosm of your view of Nocturnus relations perhaps? The only criticism i have is with the railing in the Kaliphlin vig - that 1x4 tile sticking up is a bit jarring. Anyway, it's nice to see some respect been paid between the guilds! Trash talk is all very well, but it gets a little wearisome sometimes.

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks, i just hope i can contribute a bit more to the guild now! Welcome back WbD! Kalin is always most welcome in Peregrinus, as her father was before her. ~~~~~~~~ Anyway, i've got another update to my Peterea uni lecture theatre project to show you all. I'm pretty much at the level of the roof now (i'm planning a big domed roof), have finished the back alcoves and added butresses. I'm quite happy with things so far but i'm very nervous about tackling the roof! Still, i only have a week and a half left before it goes to the Seymour show, so no time to muck about. Close-up of one of the back corner alcoves. Any criticisms or suggestions gratefully accepted! -
Dark Isle Saga: Rising Of The Damned Part 1
Gabe replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Guilds of Historica
Wonderful build DC, the textures on the stone walls just break my brain! The mottled blues of the upper story look very nice too. Gosh Avalonia is in for some rough times it seems... can't wait for the next thrilling installment! -
Wonderful work. That rockwork just looks so natural!

They look great Masa! The wip looks very promising - i'm curious to see how big it's going to be when finished. I like the almost Thai-style roofline. The huge LDD tower looks amazing too! -

Haha i never do what i'm supposed to though! Nice to see you leading the dark forces though, Nocturnus looks like a force to be reckoned with! Thanks Soccerkid! I'm feeling quite excited about book 2 already! Cheers Masa! Ooh, will you post a progress pic/teaser of your current build? Aw thanks Gideon, you have no idea how chuffed that makes me feel. Kaliphlin certainly is the richer for having you! Seconded!! Haha... Yeah, selling one second-hand guild, only slightly used? (Too harsh? Sorry! *ducks*) -

Hey fellow guildies, sorry i haven't been around to contribute for much of this year (ugh i sound like a broken record ), but i still want to be a part of GoH for Kaliphlin. The recruiting drive sounds like a cool idea and i'm totes fine if anyone wants to use any of my images for that purpose. Believe it or not but i am still building - this bloody Petraea uni thing is taking forever but i've promised it for a show in 2 weeks so i'll definately have pics to show you by then! For now though, this is as far as i've got with it: It will prob end up a load of old cobblers as i feel well out of my usual building rhythm atm, but whatevs, at least i will have made something at long last, right? Hope you are all doing well!
