LEGO Star Wars 2023 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!
Kaijumeister replied to MKJoshA's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The OT is already getting some pretty decent representation this year to be fair, with the TIE Bomber, dioramas, Yavin IV, UCS Chewbacca, and mechs (although that’s more of a loose association with the latter). I wouldn’t mind more fresh OT ships, but please no more oversized grey polygons. Over the past couple of years, Lego have shown that they’re more willing to take ‘risks’ with dedicating larger sets towards non-OT vehicles, for good or ill. I don’t think it’s a particularly smart move to dedicate even more sets towards the OT this year, but everyone’s opinion on that will vary. Count me in for wanting a Stinger Mantis in September. I don’t think it’s terribly likely but one can hope. I still can’t fathom how we’re getting so many large sets that month. As for the Rex discourse, there is absolutely no way Lego are unaware of his popularity, especially with us getting another 501st Battle Pack and a Rex helmet this year. As much as I can see Lego wanting to wait for a pricier set to allocate him to (501st Y-Wing, LAAT/i, etc.), when will that happen? It doesn’t make narrative sense including him in the Swamp Speeder, but it would certainly explain why that set is absurdly overpriced. @Pedilego Agreed on all counts, I enjoyed that interview and would love seeing that sort of communication from the Lego Star Wars team. -

Correct. The two large unknown sets and the Ahsoka sets are all lined up for September. It’s going to be a very expensive month provided they’re good sets. @Pedilego It’s funny you bring up Micro Galaxy Squadron, I love that line. They made a Yoda’s Starfighter fairly recently so it’s quite funny that Lego are also bringing it back this year. I keep flip-flopping on whether this set will be as lacklustre as it sounds or if it’ll include a third minifigure that’s more desirable than Yoda and R2 to seal the deal. Cynicism says it’ll be just those two, but part of me also feels like Lego will put something else in there to make the set more appealing. -

Fair enough. Releasing any sort of Indy merchandise in today’s climate was never going to be a straightforward affair, so I guess I’m just happy we at least got a few solid sets out of the theme. Even with Hasbro, what they’re putting out this year is pitiful compared to how huge their 2008 lineup was. I shall now go back to placing my hopes on Star Wars delivering some winners this summer! @Mandalorianknight Yeah I’m not sure either, if I had to guess maybe it’s the overall structure of the set? You have the main temple altar at the front with the mine cart track assembly running behind it. The latter seems to be balanced on a structure atop a single 2x(something) plate, which could be quite fragile to apply weight on maybe? Not that any of it matters at this point anyway. -

Good point. Although there is a ‘Hypnotised Indiana Jones’ figure variant in the pipeline for the future apparently. I mean it’s not as controversial as, say, a Mola Ram with human heart, but it’s still a pretty hardcore figure to make. Overall, Hasbro are certainly playing it less safe than Lego are with the Adventure Series figures. We’re getting Belloq in his ceremonial robes, Major Toht, etc. Also not sure if any of you watch the ‘A Couple of Brickheads’ podcasts on YouTube, but in this week’s segment one of the hosts mentioned they’re in contact with people working at Lego, and the possibility of a faulty part / design floated up again for the ToD. -

I think the overall issue is that the landscape of Star Wars content is so vastly different to what it used to be 8 years ago (that’s when the Azure Angel was released right?). It’s no longer just the films, a couple of animated shows, and the 2D Micro Series. Now more than ever, it seems like Lego’s focus is to juggle between the plethora of new shows whilst also delivering sets from the classic media that has an established presence. There’s simply no room for deep cuts the way there used to be - though I suppose like last year’s Fighter Tank still slip through! Also, the Clone Wars Anniversary isn’t simply for the 2003 Series, it’s for Clone Wars as a whole which started in 2003. Honestly it’s a weird thing to make an anniversary of to begin with. But tying things back to this year, I’m glad we’re getting more substantial sets in September. Last August brought us the Justifier, AT-TE, Scythe, BD-1, Ambush on Ferrix, etc. This August feels comparatively light with just Yavin IV, a couple of small prequel era sets, the Spider Tank, and the mechs. Actually all in all, it looks like we’re getting more larger playscale sets this year than we did last year if I’m not mistaken? Just a month later than usual. -

Promobricks is usually on the ball with their predictions to be fair, I doubt they’d bring up the inclusion of spoilery characters if they weren’t confident about them, especially if this set will be officially revealed that close to May. I must say, this has significantly raised my excitement for the set. I’m assuming the spoiler characters could be -

No, Jabba’s Throne Room is going to be an 18+ diorama and is either cancelled or delayed, going by what the more prominent leakers are saying. It’s not happening this year. As for the two unknown September sets - it’s interesting that the two Ahsoka sets have tags to confirm they’re from the show but these don’t have any such affiliation. Skeleton Crew could be possible, however given that Ahsoka will most likely air later in the year (hence the sets releasing in September), it’s looking increasingly likely that Skeleton Crew will air next year instead. I’m hoping for these two to be a Gunship and Stinger Mantis personally, however I think @FoggyFate teased that there was a large non-D2C set coming that was already guessed by someone in this thread, an Original Trilogy capital ship I think? It was around the time the summer set list leaked out last month quite a few pages back, if anyone remembers. So one of the September sets may be that. -

If we don’t get a buildable satchel at $500, what’s even the point of bringing the theme back? -

Just wanted to clarify (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong) that this is the current September line up, following Brick Clicker’s video from yesterday? - 75354 (9+, 1083 Pieces) - 75357 (10+, 1394 Pieces) - 75362 (Ahsoka set, 599 Pieces) - 75364 (Ahsoka set, 1056 Pieces) - 75371 (Chewbacca) This is starting to make the summer wave look much better in my eyes, particularly due to the presence of more system scale sets. -

Kaijumeister replied to Pulp Detective's topic in LEGO Licensed
All we can hope for is that at least some sort of justification is given for why this theme was handled the way it did. Like @THELEGOBATMAN rightfully points out, imagine if this sort of approach was taken with Avatar? There’d have been backlash for that too. But that said, Lego has no obligation to ever reveal why things panned out the way they did. I’m in the camp that Dial of Destiny will be an awesome film that will perform well at the box office, and I suspect the decision-makers at Lego will regret not having any product to tie in to it. One thing I’m also quite curious about is the pricing for the April wave. Not that I’m complaining of course, but those three sets represent some fantastic value for money (especially as licensed sets based on a Lucasfilm property). Why do you all think that is? I know Indy doesn’t have the same pull as Star Wars, but given how flat-out greedy Lego has been with their pricing models as of late, this is a refreshing change. -

Not gonna lie, I think my biggest disappointment with the 3 sets we do have is the lack of a proper hat for Indy’s dad. I can’t imagine Lego would’ve struggled to find more uses for it in other themes. Outside of that, I think the sets are fairly solid for the most part. -

So technically this would be considered the largest flagship summer set right? Even if it’s a September release. I’m hoping it’s something fantastic. The Republic Gunship, Stinger Mantis, or even the Ghost would be a great set at that piece count. Certainly looks like the real heavy hitters of the summer will be reaching us in September with a few highlights in August. I know none of the usual reliable leakers have confirmed it yet, but I’m feeling optimistic about how frequently these Captain Rex rumours are occurring for the Swamp Speeder. Given the price point and piece count, it definitely strikes me as a low effort set that will still sell because of stellar minifigures. Still wish we’d have gotten a 501st Y-Wing at some point. Shame about Jabba’s Diorama though, I’m picturing that Oprah meme, just replace ‘car’ with ‘delayed / cancelled’. -
Indiana Jones 2023 - Rumors & Discussion
Kaijumeister replied to Pulp Detective's topic in LEGO Licensed
I just want to know who is at fault for what’s been happening and why. Was it Lego not managing the theme properly? Was it Lucasfilm being difficult? I could’ve stomached the ToD being cancelled if we still had the Dial of Destiny sets coming, but it’s the latter that’s really left a sour taste in my mouth. Just watching the trailer and Super Bowl spot, there are already plenty of cool looking scenes that would’ve made for some good set material. I do hope Lego releases an official statement if only to clarify that these three sets are all that’s coming. Frankly speaking, I’d say that the Hovitos Temple alone makes the entire wave for me given how fantastic that set is! But also, it’ll be interesting to see how Hasbro, Funko, and the usual licensees manage their rollout of Dial of Destiny merchandise. To be fair, there still hasn’t been an official reveal / release date for merch based on that film specifically, and it’s releasing at the end of June! So whatever is happening, Lucasfilm is cutting it close either way. -

Kaijumeister replied to Clone OPatra's topic in LEGO Licensed
Given how dual moulded minifigure parts are oversized 90% of the time, this definitely has something to do with Lego’s own manufacturing processes and standards right? There’s no way they’d intentionally make these pieces that large. Saying that, I kind of like it. It certainly could be better but it’s nice to finally see a new Batman cowl. -

Hey now, let’s not disregard the woes of the 3.6 people worldwide who wanted Fantastic Beasts sequel sets. I mean, I totally agree with the principle of what you’re saying, but I can think we can all agree that Lego has become very sloppy as of late when it comes to their communication and sense of consistency. The mistakes they seem to be making are increasing in frequency and magnitude, especially since COVID. -

Yeah this is a good point, No Way Home comes to mind but I believe the largest Wakanda Forever set was also initially going to be released after the other tie-in sets. Overall I hope this is just Lego being really good (for once!) at completely sealing any leaks for DoD merchandise. Lucasfilm are notoriously secretive as we all know, I’d argue their anti-spoiler policy borders on ridiculous. But all in all @BrickBob Studpants, I’m keeping a fool’s hope more than anything, all signs point towards DoD being an awesome film and I’d love to see some sets from it. 3 sets aren’t enough to scratch the itch for me! -

Seems like the picture rollout isn’t so smooth this time because Lego is still working on the background renders for the set, as per Promobricks. Doesn’t look like we’ll get box images for a while. I can’t believe they actually made a new piece for Bo’s hair! It looks incredible, and for a moment I thought it was just the same piece used for Rachel’s hair from the Friends Central Perk set. Will definitely be picking up this set now. -

Just a hunch, but I think it’s possible they’ll be released next year. Reviving Indiana Jones for just 3 OT sets (well, just Raiders and Crusade) still seems like an odd move. Lego doesn’t have rights to produce Indiana Jones sets just because of their existing partnership with Lucasfilm for the ongoing Star Wars license right? If they spent goodness knows how much money on an Indy license again, I’m sure they’ll at least want to produce sets on this year’s film. Can’t wait for the April sets to drop! -

Completely agree. Also everyone, it looks like the product description for the set mentions that there’s space for a minifigure inside the cockpit of the tank. Seems like an odd thing to highlight. @BrickBob Studpants Haha true enough! Can’t say I’d be particularly drawn to the set if it just includes more Mandalorian and Imperial Pilots, we’ve had a bazillion of them already. I just remembered that Lego_Fulcrum teased about 5-6 months ago that we’d be getting a this year. If we now know the subject of all three Mando S3 sets, I wonder if they were mistaken or if this is still happening? -

You can thank Lucasfilm for that, they probably give licensees a few disparate pieces of concept art without much context or story elements just so they can put something on shelves whilst the season is airing without necessarily spoiling anything. Without being that guy and delving into what’s been spoiled for Season 3 online, there seems to be awesome potential for characters and locations in this season that won’t see any Lego representation until next year, if that. I’m sure the wait will be worth it, the 2021 sets we got for Season 2 were pretty damn great after all. @BrickBob Studpants I seriously hope Din and Grogu aren’t reused again in that dogfight set! -

Credit where it’s due, the build itself looks great (overwhelming greyness aside) and that new Bo Katan is leagues better than the one we got in 2021. I’m interested to see what features there are to this, wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a holding cell for Din underneath the droid. I do agree about the darksaber though, I wouldn’t have minded if the entire thing was a single mould if it meant getting the overall shape and ‘crackling’ effect of the blade right, the latter part is an especially important part of the weapon that Lego didn’t really bother to do anything about. I’m glad Lego finally decided to make a new mould, but it should have been much better given how long they’ve taken to come up with this. Given just how detailed the specialised weapons in themes like Ninjago get year after year, there’s no way that level of effort couldn’t have been applied towards the darksaber IMO, I mean just look at the Blades of Deliverance from that theme’s summer 2020 lineup. As an aside, I’m looking forward to seeing some more colourful sets this year. -

The not-a-Rahkshi mech is a solid choice for a set, but admittedly I was expecting more? Of course I have my hopes up that it’ll look great though, finally we get a new Darksaber mould! Glad to see my suspicions confirmed on that front. Add me to the list of people who’d love to see a new hair / hairband mould for Bo Katan, I mean they gave a random character like Vane a new mould for crying out loud. The release cadence of these Mando S3 sets certainly is odd - however if the Fang Fighter vs TIE Interceptor won’t be revealed for another few weeks, my hopes for its potentially spoilery minifigure lineup have just gone up even more. Personally, it would be disappointing just to get more generic Mandalorians (albeit with nice printing) and TIE Pilots, so I hope Lego has planned something special with this set at least. -
Indiana Jones 2023 - Rumors & Discussion

The problem is we don’t actually know what the three known sets are supposed to represent. Does this herald the return of Indiana Jones as a theme? Are these the only three sets Lego intend to release to the general public before it’s gone again for good? Usually when a licensed theme (new or revisited) is revealed, a press release is at least provided to indicate Lego’s intentions with it, such as when Avatar was first officially confirmed. We’ll probably get more information on the full picture closer to June / July, be it from the usual leakers or from Lego directly. -
Indiana Jones 2023 - Rumors & Discussion

Loving the memes everyone I suppose it’s always possible that we’ll get the Temple of Doom and Dial of Destiny wave next year, the sets we’re getting next month are pretty much winners all around anyway. As it stands, a full on merchandise push for the fifth film is still forthcoming - it’s always possible that Disney / Lucasfilm would like to co-ordinate a proper reveal across Hasbro, Lego, Funko and so on. Thus far, only 2-3 toys based on the film have been revealed, all of which belong to Hasbro’s child-oriented line anyway. Let’s see what happens and keep our expectations minimal.
