Indiana Jones 2023 - Rumors & Discussion
Kaijumeister replied to Pulp Detective's topic in LEGO Licensed
Okay, so positives first: - The U.K. price points for these sets are great! Excellent value for money, but I’ll still be skipping the Well of Souls set. - As already made obvious, the Hovitos Temple is magnificent. This is peak Lego design and execution for me, and it will certainly sit up there as one of the best licensed sets ever made. Hats (or fedoras) off to the designers of these sets. Now for the negatives: - Lego’s communication is abysmal, what exactly is being conveyed with that press release? ‘Consolidating’ three sets for the initial relaunch of this theme implies to me that more sets / waves are on the way, but it seems so intentionally ambiguous. - Absolutely no mention of the Dial of Destiny sets despite the fact that the film is only just over 3 months away. Are they cancelled? Delayed? I’m not sure if it’s just Lego at fault here or Lucasfilm just being a problematic licensing partner. - Failing to remove the Temple of Doom from the product copy for these sets, now that’s just funny. Overall, the sets we are getting are brilliant! But I can’t deny how much my enthusiasm in this year’s Lego output is dwindling week after week. Just wish they’d communicate better, if only to their LAN members at least. -

Unfortunately there’s no obligation for them to do so, because no set exists until it’s been revealed or on shelves. I’m prepared to laugh at how Lego justified the end product that actually reaches shelves. ‘In anticipation of the newest instalment, relive the classic adventures of Indiana Jones!’ Funnier still is that Dial of Destiny even gets an indirect mention in the manual for the Temple of the Golden Idol. -

Given the poor Summer lineup for Star Wars, this just isn’t a good year for Lego-Lucasfilm sets in general. At this rate, either the sets are significantly delayed or are Lego exclusives for whatever reason, or (more likely) they just aren’t happening. Anxious to see what the official theme reveal will have to say on this. -
Looks great but more expansion sets aren’t my thing, see you guys next year!

100%! It was a big mistake to release this following TBoBF. Where the on-screen ship is sleek and compact, the Lego version just feels very hastily and sloppily designed, not to mention extremely oversized. This is the one set where they should have done something other than slap bricks on plates and calling it a day, although the engine assemblies are pretty nice. But yeah, I’m all for revisiting this as a set. -

Lost Tomb was always a better than usual value for money at its initial price-point, but doubling it? What on Earth are they smoking at Lego? -

Two solid passes IMO. Might buy the Snub Fighter at discount, but a third minifigure would’ve sweetened the pot, especially at that MSRP. Curious to know what this ‘bad news’ will be about. This is already one of the weaker years for Star Wars we’ve had in a long time so I’m not sure if I had an appetite for more disappointment. -

The film certainly isn’t delayed. It’s well into post-production as per the interviews with James Mangold, not to mention the Super Bowl TV Spot being released. An official press release for this theme shouldn’t be that far away now, and I think some of the usual LAN YouTubers have mentioned they’re already starting to receive review copies of these sets. I do agree that Lego absolutely sucks with marketing this theme though. But holding off on revealing something exciting until after it’s been leaked to everyone and their mother is a long term tradition for them anyway. -
I’m trying to temper my expectations but can’t lie, feeling very excited with all this anticipation from Lego! Despite my best efforts I’m starting to genuinely think we’ll get System-scaled sets this summer. Mildly off-topic but I built the ? Block over the weekend and just…wow. Brilliant set in concept and execution. As someone who grew up with Super Mario 64 DS, it was lovely to recognise the various details from the 4 levels despite the high level of abstraction offered by the mini dioramas.

My sentiments also. It’s accurate, displayable, and the functions are ingeniously designed. A lot of love and effort went into this set and it clearly shows. I think I’ll end up picking that up along with the Fighter Plane Chase. Escape from the Lost Tomb has grown on me a lot, but that’ll definitely be the one I skip. There’s just something about the overall layout of the set that leaves something to be desired. -
Awesome MoC! I love how compact yet unique these ships are, your design reflects that excellently.

I sincerely hope this isn’t the case, but can also see it being true. One would think this sort decision-making would be done before even setting out to design any sets to begin with! You’re definitely onto something there with the point about recouping costs by releasing at least 3 more or less finalised and ‘safe’ sets - get some mileage (…or years) out of that new hair / hat piece too. Very interested to see how Lego decides to spin the decision to release 3 Indy sets and retire the theme again after that. Lego just seems to be dropping the ball more and more lately, or perhaps their mistakes are just becoming more transparent for those of us who are serious enough about collecting to congregate on forums about it. Let’s see how things pan out I suppose, the April wave press release should be pretty telling. Ugh, if nothing else, I was really looking forward to a cool Greek Tomb set. -

Wasn’t a fan of the film either, but I totally agree. The Goat Boat was a pretty fantastic set all around, and really should be the sort of standard to expect from film tie-in sets in terms of both content and value for money. The smaller set was pitiful, but Including a Ravager Thor variant would’ve redeemed it. Looking forward to finding out what the remaining unknown August sets are - still a small handful of set numbers we don’t know about! -

@Mandalorianknight I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Lego cited the short development time for last year’s N-1 as one of the reasons for the lack of a new Darksaber mould. I probably am grasping at straws in hoping for a proper mould regardless though. Does anyone remember back when the Summer / Autumn set lists came out last year that the Andor set number was originally scheduled for September? And then it was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration that it would indeed be releasing in August with the rest of the summer wave, despite the show premiering in late September. I’m wondering how possible it is for the same to apply to the two Ahsoka sets and third unknown September set, in that they might also see a August release in the end. -

Whilst I agree with this, I also don’t think it’s something that can just be brushed under the carpet. Historically, have Lego ever released a wave of sets from older films to coincide with the release of a sequel, but then never release any actual sets based on the sequel itself? I suppose No Way Home sort of counts, but that was an overarching issue all licensees had with Marvel / Sony due to how secretive the film itself was. Plus we are getting an actual NWH set this year. What’s going on is just weird really. Clearly Lego were going to repeat their strategy from Avatar with Indy - release a handful of sets from the classic movie(s) and then have another wave for the new film. Even the time gaps are somewhat consistent - the initial Avatar wave released in October last year, with the Way of Water sets subsequently releasing 3 months later in January, literally just after the film released. That sort of gap makes sense with Indy as well - first wave in April and then another wave 3 months later in July - right after DoD hits cinemas at the end of June. It makes too much sense. It does make you wonder what merits cancelling an entire wave of sets. They can’t all just have design flaws, so perhaps the villains being Nazis again plays a role? Or perhaps the film constantly being delayed combined with Lucasfilm being notoriously secretive meant the sets were no longer film accurate at all? Who knows. DoD is my most anticipated film out of the year, I’m so bummed out at the prospect of not getting any sets for it. Without coming off as hyperbolic, I consider the handling of this theme to be Lego’s biggest screwup in recent memory. But I shall still hold out hope that the official announcement of the April wave will lay matters to rest. -

You mean because of the general lack of retailer listings right? If this doesn’t pan out, I can’t express how disappointed I’d be. The return of a theme with 8 sets purportedly planned but only 3 seeing the light of day? That’s more than half of the lineup getting cancelled. I’d love to understand what led to Lego screwing up this badly. But as for what we are getting, those sets are pretty damn awesome! The temple diorama’s mechanisms continue to amaze me. -

That’s a good point, but to be fair I don’t see this theme stooping to the new levels of low that Marvel does just yet, of course I may be wrong. I’m looking at these sets from the same viewpoint as the two TBoBF / Mando S2 sets we got last March, even if the pricepoints aren’t identical. 3 minifigures for the Snubfighter sounds about right - honestly an updated Mando with darksaber mould and an Anzellan figure would make the set pretty desirable. As for the larger set, a sizeable complement of new and interesting figures like what we got with Boba’s Palace would be great to see. I still haven’t opened my Mandalorian Fighter from 2021 but might sell it if that set is good enough. -

Haha, Senior - not Junior. It’s unfortunately the same hat piece from 2008. It would’ve been nice to see an updated mould for it, plus I can’t imagine it would be difficult to reuse in other themes like City. @BrickBob Studpants Plus the nanofig of Indy’s voodoo doll! That was such a cool touch to see. So much effort put into a set we’ll probably never see. -

Ah you know how it is. You spend about 2 years on a big project at work and realise right near the end of it that your product might not work out due to obvious reasons that should have been evident from Day 1, we’ve all been there right? Just kidding, but I’d be keen too to learn if this is due to a social / cultural reason or something to do with the design of the set itself. I’m leaning towards the latter because I can’t see how something as obvious as ‘this might upset some people’ wouldn’t have been brainstormed on Day 1 of development. One of the biggest shames of losing this set is the reduction in new Indy variants. That Hovitos Temple…what can I say? Absolute perfection. I’ve seen a few comments saying this wave is a re-imagining of the 2008 sets and whilst I see that in a sense, I also disagree. These sets just happen to be based on the same iconic scenes the 2008 sets so of course there’d be similarities. I must say, I’m starting to warm up to that Well of Souls set, nice touch to give those Anubis statues abs by way of the 1x1 half-circle tile pieces! Also of note is the hieroglyph based on Gali’s Kanohi mask and what seems to be a play function to deposit more snakes into the main chamber. I’m keen to see the back of the boxes to glean if there’s more to this set in particular. Still salty that Henry Sr. doesn’t have a new hat piece in the Fighter Plane Chase set though! @Legocentrico It’s a subreddit titled ‘Legoleak’. Not sure if we’re allowed to be this specific so please let me know if this needs to be taken down. -

Head looks great! Realistically, how many figures can we expect in the Snubfighter and Fang Fighter vs, TIE Interceptor sets? For the former, 2-3 sounds sensible if we look at other sets with similar price points. Getting a new Greef variant would be pretty cool, his outfits get better with every season. Perhaps an updated Mando (as in, the) too? Plenty of options with generic pirates as well. -
Without a doubt. Plus, what’s the point of a Lego Mario game when the whole course builder system exists in the first place? It just seems redundant. Although to be honest I’m shocked we haven’t had a sequel to Odyssey yet, I do hope that another Mario title is in the pipeline from Nintendo. Fingers crossed for minifigure scaled sets being announced, that’ll finally get me into collecting this theme. I feel like the course builder system has had a good run, and there is no doubt a sizeable wing of potential fans waiting for minifigures to enter the fray.

While I share everyone’s worries about this theme not being revealed a month before its release date, it’s not the first time Lego has just delayed this sort of thing. Remember the Infinity Saga sets in 2021? There was so much excitement around them (including leaked images) but the sets weren’t officially revealed until less than a few weeks before release. It does suck though, this is one of my most hyped themes for the year. -

Just saw this post, they seem to be quite confident it’s happening in the comments too. That would certainly make the Swamp Speeder more appealing and redeem the summer wave a little in my opinion. The Executor looks fantastic! Probably won’t buy it at the onset given how overpriced it is, but I love how the dioramas can explore set formats that we wouldn’t otherwise get. For the Mandalorian S3 sets, I hope Lego goes the extra mile with them. New prints for Mandalorian figures won’t really cut it this time in my opinion, so I’m holding out for a new darksaber mould at the very least. Really excited to see that Pirate Snubfighter. -
Other way round actually. When the line was first revealed in 2020 I remember it was brought up in one of the designer interviews that it was Lego’s proposal to go with digi-figures. Quite ironic given that it’s usually Nintendo that’s known for this sort of out-of-the-box approach. Completely forgot March 10 was a thing, excited to see if there are any reveals lined up!
