Real world truck: not ETF, but a prototype from another manufacturer using similar design principles. http://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/showthread.php?27580-ETF-Mining-trucks-amp-Haul-Trains/page6

+1 to logging. Would be a great sub-theme to follow mining.

Ach it's only plastic, it's not people. But sell the first 30% of it and see how you feel. That gives you a get out if you start regretting it. -
Heavy Machinery Collection

Yarder You probably already found Heavy Equipment Forums if you're building yarders (it's the best heavy equipment forum I know of). Plenty of yarder threads in the forestry sub-forum. http://www.heavyequi...estry-Equipment There are other forums in there for dozers, scrapers etc. Also for forestry, Vannatta Bros has great explanations of how yarder logging works, and how loggers use their equipment http://vannattabros.com -
These look awesome. I don't care about the franchise either way, but my kids will love this.

My son loves cranes, so he'll love this crane. But I can see why some AFOLs think it seems out of place. A crane works just as well as a standalone Great Vehicle as in this set. But eh? It's just toy bricks either way. I think my son would have been happy with this crane just as much, fewer parts consumed, more in proportion for the set. And the tractor (mower) would also then be a nice wink at history. http://www.brickset....ail/?Set=6352-1

Some of My LEGO Train Collection (12V & PF)

If it doesn't give you pleasure, sell it, let other people enjoy it. Funny thing Lego, there's a lot of fun in the experience of playing with it. But pleasure in owning it? There are hundreds of millions of these ABS parts in the world, are the ones you've got especially significant for you? -
My 3 year old is choosing fire engines every time at the moment. So we have most of the recent fire engines. They're pretty good btw.

Beware: eBay fraud -- Train MOC instructions
andythenorth replied to Steinkopf's topic in LEGO Train Tech
It won't prevent scammers, but have you guys considered releasing under a license like Creative Commons non-commercial, and watermarking that in all the images / pdf pages? http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/ I'm not personally a big fan of Creative Commons, it's complicated, I prefer the GNU licensing, but Creative Commons is probably more familiar http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html Dunno if it helps, but authors who give instructions freely haven't actually lost anything (although any buyers who fell for this have). Sure, it's galling to be exploited, but people tend to over-value perceived losses, not always rationally http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_aversion -
So what can AFOLs find to whine about with this one then?

Lego Technic 2h 2013
andythenorth replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
8421 Manual slew boom raise boom extend outriggers Motorised: line drum 42009 Motorised boom raise boom extend outriggers line drum Manual: slew Conclusion: 42009 is revolutionarily better, because motorising is always better. Right? Especially when the batteries are dead? Also: 8421: v6 engine 4 axles non-opening doors 42009: v8 engine 5 axles opening doors So by Top Trumps rules, 42009 wins across the board. This one definitely goes to 11. Am I serious? Dunno, haven't got the set yet. Definitely want it though; if the B-model is good, I'll get two. Is it revolutionary? Meh. Not. But people die in revolutions. Over-rated. 8421 is a hard act to follow; short of lasers, what more can really be done? Suspension? Kind of crammed for space to do that well. Longer pneumatic cylinders? Proportional pneumatic valves for better control Yeah, well that will get some auto-replies in this forum, but it ain't didn't happen. Fully RC including travel? Again, space, and weight and cost Unimog sized tyres? Herp, welcome to the £300 technic set, where the crane boom bends under its own weight. Lasers- 902 replies

Model Team
andythenorth replied to Paul B Technic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is maybe the closest in spirit. Working steering, suspension, winch; opening doors, hood, tailgate. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=5893-1 Brickset reviews are universally good for that set. None mention that the quad bike is crappy, and the trailer is meh, but the truck is great. My kid loves it. It might be found on sale prices as old stock, I paid less than £50 for it. -

But would that have left room for the lasers? The best thing about 42009 is the lasers. All that realistic stuff means the lasers might not fit?- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
andythenorth replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, yeah, it's a good point...when I was 1/3 the age I am now, we didn't have Amigas and Ataris and Spectrums and NES and SNES and Sega ST and Gameboy and Game Gear. Oh wait. We did They don't. That's a massive overstatement, with at best poor evidence, or no evidence at all.- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
andythenorth replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Lolest thread for a while. Crane: eh, might be epic. Don't think they'll top it, from the video, I reckon it's at the limit for size / weight / strength / stability. Looks a bit unbalanced, 8421 had a nice compact, tough look. But eh, it's going to be fun right? Service truck: totally awesome If I was 12 (hrm, I'm not), I'd have loved that set, and the amount of rebuilding possibilities from it: plenty of wheels, motor, battery box, two types of LA, pneumatic pump and cylinders in all sizes, wide range of panels beams, axles, even string. Total dream birthday / christmas set for a kid who wants to play and MOC (and might not have the spending money for bricklink). Playability-wise, and for the amount of functions crammed into a small model, it might be the closest successor to 8868? o_O Yeah, so now I get a warning for arguing with mods, but the Lazorzzz post is LOL funny. It would do us no harm here to have a bit more humour and a bit less grrr.- 902 replies

9395 Tow Truck
andythenorth replied to Tadej's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I really enjoyed building this, it looks good, and my three year old loves it, but then he loves anything with a tow hook. Once built, this set is pretty 'meh'. Limited functions, no double rear tyres, the ratchet on the winch is crappy. Fun build though. -

The thumbnail for the service truck clearly has the pneumatic logo bottom left. http://img15.hosting...34044442008.jpg Compare it to: http://thelegocarblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/8110-1.jpg Doesn't mean anything, could just be a mistake in preliminary box art. Or alternatively the retailers catalogue could be wrong.- 902 replies
