  1. First set I had. I was about 7. Worked for me, built it over and over again. Check out what the rest of Technic was like around 1985, then compare it to the bucket of 2x4 bricks and a few 4-wide Town sets I had. Context is everything?
  2. My three year old would definitely play with this
  3. (meta) Herp, the tone of this thread has changed a bit Rumours + sneaked catalogue images => "The sky is falling, everything is terrible" Official video => "OMG I love it" (might apply to a few other themes / threads too)
  4. +1 Town forum just had this minifig scale dump truck posted with full PF http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=78412 The biggest (400t) mining trucks wouldn't be right for a Technic set - something more this size would be better (using Unimog wheels). http://www.cat.com/cda/layout?m=483836&x=7
  5. Do you want to play or build? Crawler is better than unimog for play. But 8043 is good. The B model (crawler loader) is great, worthy of being an A model.
  6. Nice review, good photos Great fire truck. My 3 year old wanted this as soon as he saw it, it's a really nice toy, fun to play with. Probably an MB Econic low-floor ladder quint (the bin truck is probably an Econic too). But eh, who knows, it's a toy not a scale model.
  7. Herp, 8285. It could have been a classic, if only it had 4 axles, one of them lifting via pneumatics. And the dead-air in the sleeper box roof should have been filled in. Then I'd have bought 3. Derp. It was a classic (my opinion). Funny thing is, mine has 4 axles. Must be a special edition, or a mistake by Lego. Maybe I should have complained? http://www.flickr.com/photos/andythenorth/sets/72157624355154422/
  8. Is it a genuine Lego MOC if you print your own parts (putting aside copyright issues)? (And if you bought 'TLG official ABS', would it be valid?)
  9. Other than the thread I started about alternatives to EB, do you have any other examples of this? Trends kind of need evidence and data points and such, otherwise they're just...opinion (as discussed nicely by shadowhearth on page 1 of this thread). (I reckon 'TLG are perfect' can maybe be found in other sub-forums, dunno about the Technic one).
  10. K, but why not just drive them away or teach them how to behave by saying stuff like 'take your unconstructive whining into a dark room and stay there until you're a better person'? Opinion is opinion, boring unconstructive whining is boring unconstructive whining eh? Some forums don't put up with it.
  11. I'm not understanding this (my bad, sorry). Opinions are neither right or wrong? Or opinions are either right or wrong?
  12. Context? Browse any thread discussing new releases, and many of the review threads. High-drama whining is pretty easy to find (as also is constructive, thoughtful criticism). Whining is not unique to technic forum, there's just as much of it in the town and train forums, or maybe even more. The castle forum also appears to be full of people who think the sky is falling following the release of new castle sets. My guess is that some significant percentage of Eurobricks posters see Lego as a collectable, not a creative construction toy. Modifying a TLG design seems to be an alien idea to these people. Of course, and for the avoidance of doubt, I respect the right of these people to pursue their hobby, even if it is uncreative, unimaginative and apparently not very fulfilling (these people seem to be very unhappy).
  13. Very nice ;)
  14. There's only so many people going to drop £800 or whatever on a Technic set. So my guess is that it has nothing to do with the type of set, and everything to do with how many qualified buyers there are with a serious collector mentality. Probably the marketplace has cleared of sellers at those prices.
  15. Looks fun
  16. ...snipped some totally reasonable explaining of why you don't like the set... ...but wtf? Why? Just don't buy the thing if you don't like it. Or buy it and modify it. No-one has a gun to your head (or do they?)
  17. Yes I really did. Me and my big protest. That'll definitely stop the whining AHOLs.
  18. Purists need a sharp poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Lego is for building and rebuilding.
  19. I have no interest in building modular building, no interest in weird collecting fetishes, and my kids won't want to play with this. But....I'm going to buy it. As soon as I can. If whining AHOLs are disappointed by this set, it's probably be good. Because whining AHOLs have no concept of fun or play or joy, and certainly very little imagination. In fact whenever whining AHOLs whine about a set, I'm going to buy it (if I can afford it). Because it amuses me.
  20. $100 for popcorn? I'm disappointed by that, and I definitely won't be buying this set on that account. (See pics on first page)
  21. DNS changes takes time to propogate. Also DNS failures are not uncommon. So due to changes or failures, it's totally plausible that people on another continent (or another ISP) can see a site you can't :)
  22. Useful site: http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com Can't see Conchas not getting it back up. Have a bit of patience eh? "They really need to..." etc. Stuff goes wrong. Nobody died, it's just stupid plastic bricks.
  23. This truck is some outstanding building. I would buy it if TLG released it as an official set. Or even...build one like it, using my imagination
  24. Omigawd. Imagines. You could break the rules and build your own theatre. Of course, Lego don't want you modifying the original intellectual property in the set, and could sue you under the DMCA. You'll also definitely invalidate the warranty. However I've heard a rumour that the new Creator "Expert" sets come with a disclaimer form at the back of the instructions. You can clip it out, fill in your details, and mail it back to Lego. They'll then send you a special waiver that permits you to build whatever you want (using only legal combinations of bricks of course). You do need to be aware that you certainly can't then share pictures of your creation on websites like MOCpages, Brickshelf, Flickr, or especially Eurobricks. I mention that so you don't get into trouble. cheers, Andy
