EB's Super Hero Comic Cover Contest Voting Thread!
TheWarden replied to CorneliusMurdock's topic in LEGO Licensed
Nice work all! I guess... 2 by wonderpuddle - 1 point 9 by Captain Nemo - 1 point 8 by toutouille - 1 point Why? Wonderpuddle - Creativity! Captain Nemo - Technique! toutoulle - Emotion! -
I remember this from last year, it was fun. 4 & 5 stump me as well. My best guess is 4 might be Luke Cage but it's not obvious why I think that. It could be Thing, but it would be blue in the middle to show the F4 uniform. 5 is probably the Daily Planet (missing a globey piece at the top) or the Baxter Building, amirite? Or it's Wonder Woman's invisible jet. 6 is probably Human Torch, but it also could be Toro, if anyone remembers him. 3 is 90% Reed Ricards or it could be Elongated Man, Dibny.

Done. I think the survey might be skewed somewhat; I spent about US$150 in the last 3 months, yet, that was probably 60% of of the total I spent all year. Maybe a question that asked if this was more or less than a normal amount in that timeframe would have been useful? Who knows... Also the "value" question was odd, because most of that $150 was deep clearance from non-LEGO Brand stores, yet my purchases the rest of the year were mostly from LEGO Brand stores. Lastly, it reminds me that I should try harder to contact my "local" (local I think) LUG. Like a post above me, it seems to have little web presence, and I didn't get a response back through their Facebook page. I wonder if any of them are on here? EDIT: Oh yeah, thinking about what AAnchir said above I agree that I don't understand that question. I put only the time that I followed LEGO online, but I've been an FOL for all my life, with maybe a 20% dark age time period(s) from when I started around 6-8 years old.

I have to extend a thanks again this year to EB and it's admin staff. The odds are really nice! I won last year so this year I gave my chance to someone else and didn't enter. Or I was lazy since my bricks were not accessible this month due to a construction project in my LEGO room. Either / or. Congrats to the winners!

In no particular order... I would give LEGO Design Awards to these ten sets. I used a variety of reasons from whole set design, appearance, quick play experience, long lasting play experience, part inventory, minifig design, and a few others. I'll come back with explanations on each pick after lunch perhaps. 3315-1 (Inv) Olivia’s House: The best "doll-house" style set LEGO has ever produced, period. This set's design is light-years ahead of LEGO's previous efforts in terms of Belville and it's ilk, chock full of furniture, nicely designed rooms, play scenarios, etc and full of building details that even look good to AFOLS. Also, when you have customers outside your intended target (older male AFOLS) wanting to buy this, then you know you did something right. 4202-1 (Inv) Mining Truck:If you ever had a Tonka truck as a kid, this is one of the best sets to capture that flavorful fun. 4625-1 (Inv) LEGO Pink Brick Box: An underappreciated budget gem. Odds are if you are an AFOL, this bucket is probably useful to pad out your rare color inventory. 5887-1 (Inv) Dino Defense HQ: Dino got passed along amidst other themes for many I believe, but this playset, with one each of (most) of the dinos, just seems like so much fun. 6857-1 (Inv) The Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape: One of the hardest to get sets this year, it really hits all the notes and backs it up with a perfect set of minifigs in one spot. 6866-1 (Inv) Wolverine's Chopper Showdown: The helicopter design is not the strongest, but a very solid budget offering. 9492-1 (Inv) TIE Fighter: I have a few thoughts. One, this is arguably the best non-UCS TIE ever produced. It's a success a long time coming, not that all the other TIEs were failures, just that all the others seem to be in a similar design approach, while this one just comes ahead. Two, this has UCS design but at a non-UCS price appealing to the casual collector I think. 9516-1 (Inv) Jabba's Palace: Wow, again, miles ahead of the first one. First, it really is evocative of the source material. Second, ignoring the price, the minifig design is surprising. One might argue that they have too much detail, but we won't get into that here. 10228-1 (Inv) Haunted House: A refreshing take on the modulars to see something so different, it makes me wonder if we will see "non-Town" modulars again. 3300003-1 (Inv) Lego Brand Retail Store: A beautiful disaster, I say. It's so frustrating. I no doubt think that this would be a great seller for AFOLS if it was a normal buy-able set, why, who wouldn't get one to put on their desk at work, mantle, coffee table, etc? I would, but maybe I'll Bricklink something similar since most of us prefer not to pay the second hand market prices for it... Maybe we get a minifig scale LEGO store set sometime in the future? EDITED in reasonale. Love to hear if you agree with me or think these a bunch of bollocks.

Bizarro Leonardo! That is pretty darn cool and it gives us a preview of the shell and head pieces. -
Discontinuation of “Grab Bags” in LEGO Brand Retail
TheWarden replied to Bricksan's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Sadness. I love grab bags. I saw a grab bag with a neat windscreen in it once, but I couldn't place it. Turns out as I reasearched the next day, that it was a Millenium Falcom top part of the windscreen! I should have gone back and bought it, really... Here's hoping they can come back in some form... -
Your Thought to our VIP program is important to us!
TheWarden replied to GRogall's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Your message and the thread title seem to be at odds with one another. Your thread title looks like it might be something from our LEGO Ambassidor ([sp] something with my Firefox autocorrect and the new forums doesn't work?) about feedback on the VIP program... yet your post is just asking how to unsubscribe from their email list. You might change your subject. And I'm guessing the emails have a link to unsubscribe, and if not, I'm sure your email program or site has a way to block or filter these if they truely bother you. -
Lego aware of brand saturation fears
TheWarden replied to SheepEater's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Seems to make sense. Granted, when LEGO says they have to make something new every game, they are granted the gift of multiple licenses. So, when LEGO Batman came around, the "new" was the Batman (and DC universe) environment. Then, similarly, the Potter and Indiana Jones universe. So... I think they just were lucky there. Unfortunately, in terms of their "tie to physical product" they might trip over themselves a small amount; in the Batman series, you can play many characters that aren't tied to real product. Outside of $100+ promos, you can't get a LEGO Green Lantern... but you have one in the video game genre. This might be frustrating to audiences (and Green Lantern AFOLS, of course). But in the bright side, not only is the LOTR license new, LEGO is trying another new thing: voice acting! -
The Penguin's Batman Minifigures. )
TheWarden replied to The Penguin's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Sinestro! Wow! Never thought I would see the day I'd see a Sinestro minifig. It's ambitious, but it would be awesome to make one of each of the Lantern Corps in the DC universe... Atrocitus from the Red Lantern Corp Larfleeze (with trans-orange construct) aka Agent Orange (Put Sinestro here) Any Green Lantern here, maybe Kyle Saint Walker from the Blue Lantern Corps Indigo-1 from the Indigo Tribe Carol from the Star Sapphires If you wanted to pull out all the stops, repaint arctic Batman that we are getting next year to White Lantern Batman and make a Black Hand from the Black Lantern Corps (with minifig skull head with Batman headgear on it) to recreate the Blackest Night event. Just daydreaming here.... Anyway, I love your customs if you can't tell. -
Been a while since I uploaded anything and this is part of the reason why. I've been working on this off and on for a few months, but have made some smaller MOCS that I plan to upload soon. So, this was mostly sketched out with some not so good sketches here if you really want to see them. The style is mixed - open back Classic Town style in the rear for the back buildings, full sides and roof for front buildings and all to almost Modular level of detail as best as I can. If you ever wondered what a AFOL with an architecture background might build... well, I tried to use some of that knowledge here with a bit of modern, Art Deco, and other influences. All roofs and floors will lift off. Interiors are planned if I don't get bored. This is 10x the size of a project I usually build in scope. Obviously it's a work in progress, any comments or suggestions are quite welcome. Why are you supporting the bootleggers?!!? You buy them, they just make more. I don't get it. Ah well. Generally reviews of them here are not very productive and just turn into bash fests, but if there is enough demand here...

It's on there, but it's no big deal: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=6860-1 Bout half way down the page.

My curiosity has gotten to me as you mention your cash flow sometimes. Do you buy all new parts for each project? Do you keep all your old towns together? If you buy sets, do you part them out for future use? Do you sort? You seem to get parts you need soon - how? Bricklink? LEGO Pick a Brick near you? I hope I am not being rude, but you seem interesting.

Minifigure marketing; package redesign and other ideas
TheWarden replied to raiderone's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Hmmm... beats me. I guess I'm the anomaly. I hate "blind packaging" enough that it prevents be from buying the original product. I have played a TCG (Magic: the Gathering) for about 15 years, but like 6 years ago I found out I was tired of randomness and haven't bought a pack since, preferring to buy singles and duel decks and things where I know exactly what I am getting. The same for me applies to the minifig packs. I haven't bought a single one I think, but the new "theme packs" like the band, the beach, and the monster set are quite appealing to me and I might buy them! -
Celebrating the Reviewers Academy's Fourth Anniversary!
TheWarden replied to JimBee's topic in Forum Information and Help
It's a review explosion! But seriously, good work you guys and gals. EB really has the best reviews of LEGO products on the web. -
I guess I can post in here now. TheWarden - Of their choice [i won the 2012 Bucket Challenge in the Sci-Fi forum netting me my first tag and a title "of their choice." Har har.]

Hmmm, now that you mention it, maybe Hulk should be made of Duplo blocks?
-
Eh? I have a few hobbies that I split my "entertainment budget" on, not exclusively LEGO: - Last gen video games (PS2, Xbox1, Gamecube) - Green Lantern comics (although I've mostly stopped) - Movies, although I only buy a limited genre of comedy - Magic: The Gathering (but again, I haven't bought new cards in about a year, and have been only messing around with cards I already have) The division swings every few months or so. I'm stocked up on LEGO for now (still sealed) so there is a good chance I won't buy any more this year. I also bought a bunch of movies last month, so I may not buy any more there for a while either. Maybe I'll buy a new Magic deck, then.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, I bought him in Lego as fast as I can. Yep, bought the new Spider-Man set at my local LEGO store yesterday. I missed him back in the day.
-
Sooo... the Lego Shop at Home says July 23 is when you can order the Spider-Man set, but my local LEGO store says they will start selling them on the 1st. Darn. I have a coupon for a in-store purchase for 10% off... ... but only until the end of the month.

The bridge / overhead roadway looks promising! Oh, maybe one long term suggestion for you: Your sticker work really is fascinating and effective but you might look into how you do the smaller ones which look like they could use more resolution or clarity or a better image editing program or somesuch.

Thanks for the answer, by the way. I had a comment on the "exclusive" figures that I was wondering if anyone else shared my view. I don't mind the exclusives at all as long as I can buy at a retail store at least one version of the character. So, the Iron Man without mask and the Capt America alternate doesn't bother or really interest me because I was able to get another version in sets. However, the Green Lantern exclusive bothers me greatly if it will never be in a set. As a big GL fan, I really, really want a GL minifig. I'm not going to boycott LEGO, but I may buy less if we don't see one in the next year or so, if Superheroes indeed turns out to be a multi-year license. I guess I don't have much else to say except to "wait and see" and this is coming from a non-completionist collector.

I hate to be one of those people, but I'd like to see this too. Actually, if no one else is able I can do the new Leia head swap and take a photo if someone reminds me... I, too, will be mixing up a solution to the official Black Widow fig. LEGO just didn't knock her out of the park for me.
