  1. Sure, but they weren't so dominant as they are today. Especially in the age segment where technic operates. You're right, I'm not gonna search through all of EB for quotes. Of course it's an overstatement, but they are used for a reason. And the tendancy, from my experience, is clear.
  2. In these says of Playstation and computers, I think TLG have to prioritize playability and appearance if they should be able to compete. The Test Car might have been eye-catching for future engineers in the 80s, but I hardly think many of them had gotten past the store shelves in 2013.I also want to see more pneumatics as they have been very modest with those the last 15 years, but the LAs can be better in some situations. I think the reason everybody hates them, is they have been overused in the "newly-introduced-hype". Hopefully it's coming to an end now. Regarding the bulldozer: The steering system is simple and efficient, I don't really see why you would want to complicate that.. And it's a megablocking (Edit: f****** gets autoreplaced with megablocking, lol) RC bulldozer made out of lego, how awesome is that when you're 10 years old. Long story short: Realism comes at a price. @davidmull: And I thought I was spamming this thread...
  3. True, although the 20 tooth gear worked good for the purpose as well. Too bad there isn't a telescopic axle instead. Would be a dream for MOCing.
  4. It's most likely where you seperate the chassis from the superstructure, like in 8421. Now that I think of it, That doesn't work very good with a geared slew... so i fear that may be 100% manual.
  5. More like 6-7x I don't really fance the new 11x3, it's kind of the point of the panels to cover the holes.
  6. The bottom left is the only one that isn't related to the crane, and the symbol looks more like an outrigger than slewing. It could just be an access to the gearbox on the chassis. It doesn't really have any reason, but they did something similar on the unimog if i remember correctly.
  7. The fourth output must be for the stabilizers, which means that the red lever on the chassis switches between extending and deploying them. This set is awesome. Looks like the crane sections slide on wheels, nice way to cope with the friction.
  8. If you guys actually had bothered to see what info paul_delahaye fed us with on the previous page you might have understood that it is very possible that the LAs on the outriggers are motorized, and that is exactly why they are very interesting.
  9. It may be a long one of these (with a normal axle connector). These could slide on a normal axle, and you get a telescopic axle. Wish I had that when I made these: Edit: That means we have to reimagine how the gearbox on this. 5 outputs at least.
  10. So you are pretty much sure that the LA's are operated from inside the chassis? Does this mean some kind of extending axle? If so: That's AWESOME
  11. This one is worth to mention. Although it tries to hide its awfullness under a thick layer of stickers, it just appears to be a bad joke. This must have been made by someone who hates technic.
  12. In terms of gear/axle linkage complexity and usage of space, a 4-way gearbox in the turntable would be good, but not particulary impressive for such a big set. The 5-axle, 7 studs tall chassis probably contains 3-4 functions (steering, engine, stabilizers and maybe turntable).. not really challenging to incorporate? It seems like it's a bit better than 8421 at least, which was awful in the complexity sense. For me, when building sets, It's nirvana when it's so complicated I feel the designer has torn out all his hair in the frustration of all the unsuccessful attempts before finally finding a way to make it all come together. Then I don't care if it doesn't lift very much or dig very well.
  13. Looks as if the towtruck has a towing fork, a crane and stabilizers. My random guess for the functions: Best case scenario: - Four outputs for the gearbox: Compressor, stabilizers, crane extention and cable. - Two pneumatic cylinders for the fork and one for the crane. - Rotating fork Worst case scenario: - Two outputs for the gearbox: Compressor and stabilizers - Manually operated and limited functions on the crane - Some random pneumatics and some shocking and unimaginable ways of avoiding using pneumatics (like the damped piston and the gear/link operated crane in 8285) - Fixed fork (and lots of angry post on EB) I'm optimistic, so I actually think the first scenario is rather likely.
  14. The current pneumatics would'nt work on a crane of this size. So it's fair that they use LA's for the static power they provide. Would have been cool if they made bigger ones instead though, the normal ones are a bit too small.
  15. They are definitely to be trusted
  16. It looks to me like the helicopter has no pitch whatsoever... I hope I'm wrong though.
  17. There already is another bionicle piece which is almost the same? Didn't know that... although I don't really care what happens in the sad world if bionicle
  18. Haven't really got that far. I need some more beams now.
  19. Cool, I don't think these pictures have been posted before. Looks like the tractors tool has a similar folding system as the 9395 towing fork. Also, it looks like we've got a new part here. The counter-balance pieces looks like these, but they are obviously different.
  20. Nah.. the superstructure on the lg1750 is dismounted when the crane is moved, mine is going to be permanent like in the lg1550. Therefore I want it as low as possible, which is also what it is.
  21. I can give you a little tease. Not entirely satisfied with the superstructure yet, the slewing is too laggy and unreliable. I guess I have to rebuild the turntable. Edit: speaking of which, Olaf
  22. The outriggers has been tweaked a bit, and photo instructions has been made. They should be public any minute now.
  23. Hmm... what? The speed gearboxes were more complex and costly?
  24. You sound very much like a grumpy old man mobi A speed gearbox is of course more realistic in a car instead of opening doors and bonnets with it, but I find the multi-output gearbox in the newer sets much more interesting. The speed gearboxes only have one output, now it's often 4 or 6, and thus is more complex, and harder to build. So I don't really see how that is going backwards or adapting sets to "stupider kids". Besides the gearbox in 8448 and 8446 had gears which didn't mesh together properly. Not very impressive if you'd ask me.
