I finally had time to play with the Powered Up elements from the new Train sets. They surely don't represent the complete PU system yet, but we can draw a lot of conclusions from them:

42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Sariel replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Speaking of which, I have a long video interview with Aurelien coming soon, too :) -
Long interview with Bugatti & LEGO designers. Plenty of marketing sweet talk, but also some facts and jokes:
-
I tried to look at that and I was unable to find any error, but perhaps I've missed something.

POV speed build: -
There is a 24t clutch gear in the drivetrain specifically to prevent the W16 from stalling, so that looks like a building error. Literally every single Chiron copy I've touched had saggy front suspension, including the one put together by LEGO people as a decoration for the Lego & Bugatti team interview. But some people claim their copy doesn't have that problem, so maybe that's just a frequently happening building error, I don't know.

42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Sariel replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Awww Jim <3 On the live build topic: yes, we clocked it at 6h 20m with a few minor building errors none of which showed on the outside or interfered with model's functions. I did have a help, but I also had plenty of people coming up and asking questions, as well as short breaks and a lot of pressure on me. Far from ideal building conditions, as far as I'm concerned. I left the Chiron we've built with the media guys and asked them to try and get it signed by LEGO and Bugatti people, then auction it for charity. I don't know if it's going to happen, but I'm strongly hoping it will. -
42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Sariel replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
1) Actually, me and Jim both have taken a close look at the Chiron set LEGO put together as decoration for our interview with LEGO and Bugatti designers, it was right there in the spotlight and guess what, the front end was pretty much touching the ground. 2) As far as I can determine it's 8+R. 3) Impossible to say without calculating ratios for each speed and I had no time to do that. Pretty sure someone else will do it sooner than I possibly can. -
Sorry for adding yet another Chiron topic, but my videos are buried on like 40th page of the general Chiron thread. And I have two that I think you'll like, with more coming shortly. First is the official Chiron reveal that has taken place at LEGO House in Billund Denmark today, with real, actual Bugatti Chiron and people from both LEGO and Bugatti, and the other is a complete review of the 42083 Chiron set. I will also have a POV speed build and interview with Lego and Bugatti designers coming up later. I'm also proud to have been part of the official Chiron live build that was completed at 6 hours and 20 minutes (my first Chiron build has taken 7 hours 30 minutes), and left my fingers completely numb ;) The Chiron reveal (presentation starts around 9:00): The Chiron review: POV speed build:

Powered Up
Sariel replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Rotation is purely cosmetic, the instructions confirm that. Also, there are 10 speed levels controlled by just pressing the + and - buttons multiple times. -
AKA Powered Up, because that's the official name. Here's a closer look at the new components from the 60197 train set, this is what's going to replace the current Power Functions system. I'm currently at Denmark and I don't have conditions nor time to test them more thoroughly, please have patience and I will do so next week.

I thought this was made clear by Lego long ago: the V2 receiver was only developed for using PF L motors and was introduced together with them. It's not supposed to replace the V1, it's not an upgrade, it's just a version optimized for running 2 PF L motors off one output, like in the 9398 Crawler and 42030 Front Loader sets. It works perfectly fine with most motors except PF M, since PF M should be used with the V1 receiver. So, to answer the question in the title, you're not going to see the V2 receiver in any new sets unless these sets are using PF L motors.

Gearboxes
Sariel replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That is correct, most Lego gearboxes are primarily for gearing down. Which makes perfect sense, since LEGO motors are too weak to drive most MOCs big enough to have a transmission at 1:1 ratio. Where I live, most Lego Truck Trial models use gearboxes with at least 3 speeds, for climbing obstacles, driving on level terrain and going downhill. So, to put it shortly, I think you're missing the point of having a gearbox. It's not to gear the motor up. It's to gear the motor in such a way that it's sufficiently strong to drive the vehicle in any conditions. Make it adaptable, in other words. Balance speed against torque as needed at a given moment. -

Jim, if I can make it while handling my wedding, my honeymoon trip and the trip to Denmark, then surely you can too :P -

I can confirm that I will be at Denmark on June 1st, taking part in the unveiling and possibly joining live stream build session. Stay tuned for videos on my channel, I'm planning to film the Danish Legoland, too. -
With all due respect to your work, I think I see at least three problems: - the upper ends of these, um, suspension columns? are going to hit the upper track if their movement isn't limited - the columns don't seem very stable; the road wheels are sitting on long, thin columns that are only braced around their tops. I think I see plenty of room for wobble here and this would get problematic for heavier models. - this solution needs the track to be very tall and the performance you're getting doesn't seem any better than with a simple torsion bars suspension (which is also way, way lower)

They're sitting on 1x3 plates, which are attached directly to track links. Sorry, I didn't have time to take photos yet.- 18 replies
