Richard Dower replied to piterx's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Any parts list or building instructions?....i'd love to build it, it looks like a C model for 8048 with bits from 8068 and 8261....well done! -
Cleaning Lego
Richard Dower replied to keroro's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I used to put all my second hand Lego into a pillow case and then wash it at 30c in a washing machine....now while this is OK for smaller parts i do not recomend putting beams and especially panels in the washine machine, why?....the panels and beams get sctrached due to to the drum spinning and all the Lego hitting off each other, lesson learned. Now i just use luke warm water in the sink and use a lint free cloth to wipe down the Lego. I think the best method, from experience...is luke warm water in the sink....no detergent or any kind of washing-up liquid or shampoo...just water. Let it soak for a few hours, gently move it arond and flip the panels or beams over. I then use a lint feee cloth used for cleaning glasses....you can get them in bulk on Ebay or Spacsavers will give you a couple for free if you ask. They do not scratch lenses so they are perfect for beams/panels. Q-tips can be used to clean the holes in beams and hard to get to spots in other types of Lego designs. -
Your Best Technic Bargains
Richard Dower replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I recently bought 8943 and it was only €50 posted....i needed it for the rare red Technic panels, which this set had 12 of. But even better, when i opened the box i discovered 6 of the bags were never opened!!....one of the bags had 6 of the panels brand spanky new!!, i also bought 7160 for just €25 posted and it was also a great source for rare parts. I troll Ebay for old Racers sets BNIB as they are always a great sourcs for parts, especially the older moulds if you want to build old Technic sets. -
I have recently bought the 7160 drop ship and Technic 8048 for spare parts, the sets themselves were in excellent condition....but i have noticed with these two and other second hand sets that the pins and axels or beams with crossholes are always lose, they are not as tight as you would see with a new set. When you buy a new set and push a 3L axel in to a crosshole it usually takes a bit of effort, but prebuilt/old sets they just slide out......?

I have also seen color variations in beams....such a a yellow 1x15 liftarm will be several differnet shades of yellow. I have also seen black axel in 4L and 6L that are shinny or flat matt. There are deffo alot of variations or colors and mould types, you will notice it more if you buy old sets from say 2009 downwards and compare the parts to sets release after 2012.

II only started collecting in the last year...but have 60 sets. I think TLG make too many small sets, anything in the €10 - 30 range is pretty usless...unless you want parts, like 42022. The best sets ever released imo are 8275, 8043, 8258, 8265, 8070. As Technic fans we want BIG sets....but they cost big money, i think TLG should create a special Technic AFOL range of sets for each year. Re-release one classic Technic set...like 8275 and then maybe 3 more very large sets to cater to AFOLs.

The Arctic Tracked Vehicle....maybe another version of the 8294 B model? http://brickset.com/sets/8294-1/Excavator

I am buying 8943 next week as it has 12 of those red panels used in 8258, which is my next build project. It has TONS of almost all Technic pieces!, 21 black 15m beams....loads of beams! Also...it has 4 parts used in an older Technic set, 44033 which is used in Technic 8434. Check out these other Bionicle sets as they have loads of Technic parts, lots of hard to find and rare colours: http://brickset.com/sets/8996-1/Skopio-XV-1 http://brickset.com/sets/8995-1/Jetrax-T6 http://brickset.com/sets/8942-1/Thornatus-V9 http://brickset.com/sets/8942-2/Jetrax-T6

Did anyone see this GOTG set?....it has 6 silver metallic panels in 5x11 and 3x7....also, the hard to find plates used in 8275 are back in this set!, 47397/47398. This set has quite a few juicy parts if you are trying to build old Technic sets http://brickset.com/...paceship-Rescue ooh!...i see more silver metallic elements used in 8285!...a 4x6 yellow plate used in 8043. correction, parts mentioned are flat silver, not metallic silver.

I am personally more looking forward to this model then the new 8265....yeah, its just a bigger RC version of the awesome 8265. This red pick up looks cool and the part count to price ratio is very decent! Also there will be a fresh supply of red panels if you intend to try and rebuld 8258 from scratch, no way am i paying €300-400 for that model, be cheaper to buy all the parts....and these fresh supply of red panels will be perfect for that. Considering the limited PF functions i dont think i will pay another €35 to motorise it, its a lovely looking model and great parts set.

Technic 2H2014 Reviews
Richard Dower replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, you can deffo add a few beams in the easy to fill spots, but i am not sure it would look good and there would be gaps....hard to say without building it and seeing what could be done. I am sure it will MOC'd though. -

I will deffo buy 2 of the 42030...but that B model deffo needs modding on the dumper section, its way too open and bitsy....can you not throw a few beams in there to fill it out?, or does it need a whole redesign and be taken apart? It dosen't seem too easy to just add panels or beams...maybe a few, considering the parts left over from the B build i think the designers should have used more leftover parts on the back end. -
Just a further parts update...in case anyone else might want to source sets for specific parts etc. Just won an auction on ebay that got me the needed 30031 parts: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=30031&colorID=67&in=A I bought 8642 brand new for just €8! In addition i got two more Racers sets that got me 8 more metallic silver 2412b, 8670 and 8496....i am hoping to get a old DACTA set that will get me brand new pneumatic parts i need. Its going really well and i think by the end only 20 or so parts will be second hand, by far the most difficult part to get new is the 4x4 round dish: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3960

^ wow!...those are amazing!....where did you source all the chrome parts? The different versions of 8285 released is interesting, i got the 6 metallic wheel version....i knew they was a set with 10 wheel hub in LBG, but i didnt know there was a full 10 wheel metallic version! Were there other sets that also had LBG versions of the other metallic parts? For the metallic parts 2412b and 4073 i was able once again to buy some old Racers sets, such as 8141 http://brickset.com/sets/8141-1/Off-Road-Power and 8496. In fact the recent 42022 Hot Rod also has 3 of the needed metallic parts: http://brickset.com/sets/42022-1/Hot-Rod

Hey guys!....don't post often but read all the posts. I am fairly new to Technic, only started collecting in the last year but i have already bought and built some 50 models! My criteria from the start was the sets/parts had to be BRAND NEW!, i tried second hand sets/parts but i always felt the only way to go is new parts, even if that's vastly more expensive. I have always loved 8285, i think it's one of the top 5 sets ever made!, so i bought one second hand....but the condition of most of the parts were not upto standard. Thankfully i got the silver metal edition, so i decided to try and rebuild the entire 1879 part set from scratch using only new parts. It's been an interesting journey thus far sourcing all the parts. I don't use Bricklink but ebay and buying new sets have helped alot. The black panels were all sourced from two sets, 8140: http://brickset.com/sets/8140-1/Tow-Trasher , and 8926: http://brickset.com/sets/8926-1/Toa-Undersea-Attack Got a good deal on both BNIB from ebay, the other four 8x12 with stud panels were sourced from 9492: http://brickset.com/sets/9492-1/TIE-Fighter The metal hook 70644 was VERY hard to find new, they are out there but very expensive!, i managed to find a second had one from France in absolute MINT condition....and it only cost €11 ...!!! :-) The vast majority of the other parts were easy enough to find and the Lego shop bick-a-brick provided a large number of the parts. Another criteria i had is that the chosen parts *must* be the original moulds, as you can see part number 30360 has an alternate mould type: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30360 , but here again i found an Italian ebay seller had the original mould brand new, that ebay shop has been a great source from original mould/parts brand new. The hardest parts are the silver metalic elements, such as these: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=75535 , they can be got new but a very expensive. I am still in the process of getting all the parts together and will report back once i get everything a build the model.
