One aspect that may be being overlooked in these discussions is that projects submitted to IDEAS are just concepts, not finished sets. Which means that LEGO could take any of these projects and decide to build something larger, smaller, or even take the concept off on a tangent. Many of the earlier submissions had this intent - they may have been just pictures or sketches. Not sure where the thought came from that a close-to-production-intent concept needed to be submitted and that the final set would closely reproduce the submission. Although this has happened, as in the ExoSuit and Mars Rover, and likely Wall-E will be very close to the submission. That said, submitting a well-though-out project that shows its buildability and play features, as appropriate, will be more likely to garner the necessary votes. Which means, the piano, if selected, could be produced as a much larger set, come with other musical instruments (an ensemble of some sort would be neat), etc... of the science museum be scaled down to a better part count/price target. The upcoming Dr. Who set certainly will be different from the IDEA's submission. How much we will have to wait and see.

I am disappointed that the Hubble Space Telescope didn't make it, maybe other space-related projects will get approved in future review periods.

I guess its time to watch Dr. Who again, I saw all the episodes featuring 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 but nothing recently as work / kids other stuff got in the way. Wondering if a William Hartnell MF be in black & white?

JGW3000 - because we are so past 2000, also paying homage to the classic Sci Fi MST3000 television show, and my initials, JGW

That happened to me once, the parts were free - shipped with the rest of the order with no charge. I felt a bit guilty, but go for it if still available!

Do MOC's have copyright?
JGW3000 replied to Richard Dower's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Any IP on the 2x4 brick, and other common parts, has long ago entered the public domain - hence competition from Mega Blocks, etc... LEGO still has patent protection on many of its parts, plus IP in the form of design and artistic creations, so still have the possibility of creating contaminated work, from an IP perspective. With regards to tools used to create the IP, use of a tool in itself is not infringing - so use of LDD to create a MOC or instructions is not violating IP rights, unless there is some language agreed to when accessing or installing the tool. I am not going to read the fine print on LDD's end user's agreement to find out. Bottom line, if your MOC has no commercial value, don't worry. If you think its going to generate tangible income, get a lawyer specialized in IP. -
Do MOC's have copyright?
JGW3000 replied to Richard Dower's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, creators of original MOCs own the copyright to that MOC - regardless of artwork, construction, written work (instructions), digital work, etc. However, if the MOC contains elements that belong to someone else, then they are not free to profit or make use of their own MOC. For example, if you use LEGO bricks that are patented, you cannot sell your MOC without TLG permission. If your MOC has for its subject someone else's IP, you cannot sell it either. An example would be a "Batman off-roader". If your MOC is simply an interpretation of some one else's IP, then you cannot get copyright - almost all Star Wars MOCs fall into this category, So if your MOC is original, and does not include someone else's IP - you are good to go. If your MOC is a new use of someone else's IP, then you likely need a sub-licence to use your MOC - including use of unexpired patented parts. -
Why does TLG make B-models?
JGW3000 replied to Emmi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Also, there have been some sets in which A and B models have been reversed depending on whether the set was sold in the US or Europe. 8274 Combine Harvester / Dragster 8284 Tractor / Dune Buggy think was one of those. Our B was your A and visa versa. -
Most wanted bricks for next LDD update
JGW3000 replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Forgot to add - make parts that extend in a linear direction actually be extendable - such as shock adsorbers and pneumatic cylinders, rather than us having to hack the LXF files thanks Superkalle! -
Most wanted bricks for next LDD update
JGW3000 replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hi Superkalle, for me it is: Servo motor L-motor Power function lights (even just the two bulb ends would be great) -
I used to watch TBBT with the sound off, closed captions on, so that my younger children who presumably couldn't read or read that fast wouldn't here anything offensive. That soon changed when my 2nd grader was laughing at the double-entendres . So, the only way I get to watch grown-up programing now is when no children are around. TBBT is not a theme for children, it is for adults. I wonder what age range will be marked on the packaging, 14-99???

And so did Johnny Bravo

My kids would get way excited by Scooby Doo sets, they would be meh for GhostBusters. So much more Scooby Doo content out in the wild, and so many more play options than Ghostbusters could ever have. But, having more Ghostbusters sets would be wicked cool, also.

Is there anything special about this "magic motor set" Looks like just the servo and L motors pinned together to save space, or am I missing something. OK, the M motor is the one recommended to motorize the features of the car, out of the box. Servo and L motors are self explanatory, what is the other L motor doing? Is it geared with the first one to provide more power to the rear wheels? Overall, looks like the model was designed to be fully motorized.

Has anyone built a LEGO Hub Bird 2014 Employee Gift Set?
JGW3000 replied to Legogal's topic in Special LEGO Themes
My Ideas bird set is on order, waiting for some other backordered items to become available before being shipped, can't wait to get it. The first time I saw a tumbleweed was out past Amarillo, heading to New Mexico, years ago. -
This set, 21102 Minecraft Micro World, has been sold out on LEGO S&H for quite some time. Just today, I noticed that Amazon has it for preorder, at regular LEGO pricing, for the US, for shipping on January 13th, 2015. They actually have it discounted by $0.04 , listed at $34.95. You need to buy $0.05 worth of stuff more to get free shipping. This would be good news if sufficient quantity become available at a the original sales price, for those of us too slow to get it the first time around. Its not the first time that a set listed as "sold out" rises from the dead and makes a comeback.
