In the past, we scored all of the free builds, which is why it took so long to score. Now a number of Guild Leaders and lieutenants pick the builds to be scored. This will vary depending on the number of builds for each scoring period, and the points and builds scored.
In Book 1, scored builds were released, and this became a point of contention between builders and judges, so builds selected for scoring as well as scores will remain anonymous. The reason for free build scoring is to account for the overall efforts by builders to contribute to their Guild and GoH, not to ask "Is Build A better than Build B?"
Expanding your Guild, adding to the backstory and adventures of your characters and building your realm within your Guild should be perhaps the primary goal for building free builds. Experimenting with build techniques, build styles and color pallets are other good goals for free builds. Building for the fun of it, another good goal. Scoring is not. That is what Challenges are for.
The intent of Challenges are to provide structured guidelines for you to competitively build for recognition.
The intent of Free Builds are to build out your realm and your Guild, while building for fun.

If a Guild has less free-builds then our number for additional scoring, then every one of those builds gets the additional scoring points. It is not percentage based (i.e. 50%.of your 10 builds get additional scoring) or quality-based at that point (we would not say "only 3 of your 5 builds will get scored because the other ones are not higher quality" if you have less than our additional scoring number for that period. All would get the additional scoring.
We do not want other Guilds to suffer though if one Guild has a lack of free builds in a period.

7 hours ago, The Stad said:Quick question: if freebuilds have yet to be officially posted to this thread, is there a sunset period for how long they are eligible for scoring, or can I post something here, regardless of how old it is, so long as it has not yet been scored?
If the free build was posted after August 1st, but was not scored in the first period, it would still be eligible for this next period, but we did score some that weren't included here, and we may not allow the time extension after Challenge 2.

Congratulations to the Challenge 1 winner for Varlyrio: @Basiliscus - Conzaga Manor
@narbilu also had one of my favorite entries.
Here Are the Challenge 1 entry scoring results:
Avalonia - 79 gold
Kaliphlin - 47 gold
Mitgardia - 29 gold
Varlyrio - 22 goldAnd here are the gold earnings for the first free build period.
Avalonia - 134 gold
Varlyrio - 110 gold
Mitgardia - 94 gold
Kaliphlin - 62 goldGiving the current standings of the guilds:
Avalonia - 213 gold
Varlyrio - 132 gold
Mitgardia - 123 gold
Kaliphlin - 109 goldWe are in 2nd place right now, but we can overtake Avalonia. You guys did a great job with free builds this period, but we will need more entries during Challenge 2 if we want to catch up.
Keep up the good work!

@Muakhah as a Lego forum, we do not promote Megablocks or Kreo, or any of the clone brands, nor do we typically want to see them in builds as they compete directly with Lego, who we as Lego-lovers want to see succeed.
Obviously we are not going to beable to check to see if a brick is a 1x2 brick in Lego or a clone brand, but it becomes a real issue if you are using parts that Lego does not produce, or colors that vary from Lego colors.
The piece you use above definitely has a Kaliphlin feel, and you can probably leave it in your intro build, but you shouldn't really be using it in other builds.
Non-Lego parts are strictly prohibited in Challenge builds, and if we can see any evidence of it in a build for a Challenge, that build would be disqualified.
As I mentioned above, we are a Lego forum, and we rely on Lego's success for them to continue producing new sets, and to succeed enough to continue testing out new concepts like the CMFs, Ideas, Elves, etc, to our benefit as AFOLs.

5 hours ago, Wiltar said:I'm building her family villa right now and plan to have the company battle its current occupants to regain control. It will count towards a few builds and help tell their story. I challenged myself to try a few new techniques and I think it will pay off nicely.
I wouldn't put it past a family (like the Amancios) to produce an heir to Isabella's family (long list sister "Oxabella?") It is not uncommon for leading families to fabricate smaller families with which to influence affairs or carry out less than savory goals.
-
For the most part, each member represents a family in Varlyrio, so you would want to utilize your female lead's (Isabella?) family to attempt to take over the head military role, or attempt a different trade that might have military significance.
-
Wiltar, you have started off well. If you are looking to depict one of the powerful families, you will need to integrate your sigfig's family in some way (marriage, adoption, formal recognition, etc.) and then post key members of your family as shown by other members in the Varlyrian Recognition Thread. I would suggest doing this regardless of your aspirations in the Varlyrian trade power struggle, but it is more important if you want to be involved in the trade-politics.
Check the first post of this thread for the Guild tasks to complete, and feel free to start posting other builds of your choosing (free builds). It would be great if you could complete builds for the official Challenges. Challenge 1 just finished, and Challenge 2 should be announced around December 15th. As you post builds, you should post a link in the free build thread, and in this thread. Many of us have a hard time tracking what's new in the free build thread, so posting it here helps people like me.
Ask any questions you may have in this thread, and we can help you out.
-
Excellent introduction! Welcome @Wiltar to the most storied of the Guilds. While we are still few in number, our members represent some of most Noble and influential lineages in all of Historica.
-
The Varlyrio intrigue thread has been updated with 3 more families entering the ranks through their excellent work.
The families will be updated again with the completion of Challenge 2, so over 3 months to get your family bios up (for those that haven't yet) and display your family trade work in your builds.
-
Excellent Vignettes and excellent story. As others have said, you`ve done a great job fleshing out each character, and embellishing on the characteristics of felines and Varlyria as you weave these elements into the bios. Fantastic work!
-
Excellent building techniques! I have been looking for a way to build block walls for a while, and this works extremely well. The free-floating cobnlestones look great as well. Beautiful and innovative build!
-
Excellent build, techniques and composition! We can always use more dwarves here - Welcome!
-
Love the vignettes, but the bios and the lineage are the real appeal for me. This is a well-defined family tree, and you do an excellent job of wrapping in the trade aspects of each family member. I hope this keeps growing (maybe see some ancestors someday?)
-
Excellent build! One of many wonderful builds from you at BW. My only critique would be that I'd like to see the sides of your Brickbuilts awnings filled in with a plate or inverted slope or two. I like your variety of awnings, the sand blue and white checkering, as well as the rockwork and sandwork. My favorite element though would have to be the pulled-back curtain. Great build!
-
Love the vignettes, and the stories that accompany them! Bernaldo seems to be quite the Rogue. Plenty of targets for intrigue...
-
Your Barge from our BW Collab.

The intent is to give everyone enough time between Challenges to build, but not space out the Challenges so much that people start losing interest. If people know when the next Challenge is coming up, they can also plan to check in at that point and schedule for it (as you are doing).
-
FYI, the tentative schedule for Challenge II will be Dec 15 (announcement) to Jan 31st (deadline).
-
1 hour ago, Basiliscus said:I left out a couple of people who pledged allegiance but didn't submit a picture because I wasn't sure if they were going to come back and tidy up their post.
I included Andrew Spader since he had a freebuild. You have to post a sigfig or a build to be an official member, so that worked well.
@Basiliscus the tentative schedule for Challenge II is December 15th (announcement) through January 31st (deadline).

@Basiliscus - Great to have you on board in Varlyrio - You are a most welcome addition!
The first post has been updated with members, Challenge I entries, and free build entries. I will be updating these with each Challenge, but will only be editing members between Challenges. Thanks to Basiliscus and Garmadon for helping out with these updates.
I would say we have a pretty good core of builders here. I would like to see some more people working on the Varlyrio Challenges and building their trade empires when they get time.
Great work on Challenge I entries and free builds!
Please let me know if I've missed any builds in the first topic.

Fantastic build! Love the use of the plates and tiles in the wall, the pillars are excellent, the roofing, the supports, all excellent. I also really like the fountain and the vineyard/bushes. Most Impressive!

Great story and very nice vignette!
