[OL - FB] The Ranger

Recommended Posts

During some recent trade missions the Oleon Fleet came into contact with hostile Pirates who's intentions were to wreak havoc on their peaceful trade missions. These Pirates chased down the convoy 'Flirting With Disaster' and immediately began taking helpless ships into their greedy hands. The four armed escorts fought heroically and losses were great on both sides. Unfortunately, of the four escorts, only The Galaxie managed to survive and overcome the marauders, capturing two of them to take back to port. Below is the condition the largest ship was captured in.

The naval architects of Oleon found greater potential in this ship and immediately put the dockyards to work on the upgrades. The upgrades included, repairing all battle damage, adding two gun ports to the sides and two to the front. With the extra weight they felt it was necessary to increase speed by adding a large lateen sail to the main mast. To increase strength and efficiency they remounted the main maist, tilting it reaward 10°.

Below is the finished product and newest addition to Admiral Duke's fleet 'The Ranger'!

I like her. Though as a man of war, clearly in the early 19th century American style she is rather Spartan, there is an obvious effort to include detail in this Moc. She reminds me very much of USS Enterprize and wouldn’t be surprised to find that was your inspiration.

I would like to see further refinements. I like that your using string rigging but you’re still letting prefab masts determine the proportions or your sails and rigging. For instance the shrouds should be above both gaff sails and the fighting tops should not interfere with those same sails. She also seems a bit cramped on deck which could be alleviated by A taking her off prefab hulls or B building out CHG style with plates and/or slopes.

I’m a late period enthusiast myself and really like her lines. Easily recognizable. Ranger’s a good choice of name too.

Thanks for sharing her and if you do work on her further beyond the confines/needs of the game, I’d love to see her development illustrated over on the MOC forum.

I like it, although I'm not sure about tilting the main mast back like that. Good color scheme. And I like the idea in your story of improving upon the captured ship!

This ship has nice curves and is close to real ships. Small cannons definitely play their role well and so does her bow and her stern. My only concern is that it would be better presented with her down half under water (i.e. 1x1 round plates pirate_tong.gif )

A great ship nevertheless! Keep her afloat Dukesc!

Nice vessel !

I like her line !

But maybe custom masts could add to a ship that size, that could help to better your custom sails and the rigging !

I agree that small canons are doing great here !

Good job !
