MOC: Add-on sets for Hogwarts.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, this is my first MOC here so be nice haha!

I fell in love with the modular system of the new Hogwarts Castle. Yet, it felt partially uncomplete, that is to say, there were things which I deemed important which were not included, rightfully so of course.

Anyway, I made a thread a while ago about how I had begun to make a modular chamber of secrets, and that was sort of the base for this "set" and the others which will follow it. I am also making a basilisk which is not yet ready for me to even start showing it AT ALL so you will have to wait  !

Also, you may note that there are a few empty rooms and a few scarce rooms. The two empty ones I'd like you all to decide upon, and please give me ideas on how to fill the others out more!

So without further adue! Sorry if they are huge!

This is the main building I have done so far, obviously I took a lot of inspiration from the new Hogwarts for this one. The roof is not yet finised obviously.

Interiour, The chamber of secrets is also not yet finished.

First tower first, it contains three rooms; the ravenclaw common room, a not yet decided upon room and the girls bathroom.

Ravenclaw common room. I'd like to put a statue in, but am yet to find something which really works for me, I might have to make a decal...

<img src=http://www.flickr.com/photos/63510100@N07/5781024494/in/photostream[/img]

The bathroom and the slide down to the chamber of secrets.

<img src=http://www.flickr.com/photos/63510100@N07/5780465785/in/photostream[/img]

The sinks are on a hinge and open, revealing a hole so that characters can easily slide down the slope into the chamber.

I will post the rest tomorrow! Lots more to come!

Well... that isn't working haha... could someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Well, the code you should be using is [/img] with the URL in between the opening and closing tags. But anyway, observations:

  • I love the sinks leading to the Chamber of Secrets, although it'd be nice if they didn't stick out as far from the tower. There's really no space for a minifigure to stand in that bathroom, which diminishes the effect. Perhaps this could be accomplished by moving the bathroom up a floor and having the "empty" floor beneath it be one that minifigures simply fall straight through when going to the Chamber of Secrets. Since the floor one space up from the current floor the bathroom is on is larger, you could possibly recess the sinks a bit further, even though that could make the whole hinge part a little more complicated.
  • Love the Chamber of Secrets and the classroom above it, although I feel like the classroom above it should be more exciting given how much space it takes up. Perhaps you could make this the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, drawing inspiration from its appearance in the Harry Potter films (with dragon bones hanging above the room). There's certainly enough space beneath that roof for something like that.
  • A bit weird that Hufflepuff Common Room is in the dungeon (although I love that you added Trevor!). It wouldn't be such a problem if not for the fact that the walls are so obviously grey and it's right next to the Chamber of Secrets. I would instead recommend moving the Hufflepuff common room up a couple floors and putting something more appropriate in the bottom floor-- perhaps Professor Snape's office. Speaking of which, one thing I'd love to see in a larger building is the Potions classroom. I loved the original set of that classroom in 2001, and while I doubt there will be one in any upcoming Harry Potter sets, it would be great if there were one.

Anyway, I'll comment on the other rooms once you post them here, since I'd like to hear your description of them so I can better understand the ideas behind the design. Great idea to expand the Hogwarts set, and I hope your designs don't stop with what you have currently!

Yeah, I really love the sink. But I don't think I understand what's the rock thinggy in this picture:

Impressive MOC, I like the scale of your castle and you balance the outlook and interior very well. Very playable.

I love your MOC. It's always nice to meet another HP enthusiast. The format you used for posting your pics is wrong. When using flickr you need to go to all sizes, choose the pic with the correct size and use the deeplink of that pic to post it here. Hope that helped.

White Cat, I believe that's the stone face the basilisk comes out of. But, I haven't checked the pictures yet.

WhiteCat, I think the stone sculpture is supposed to be the head of Salazar Slytherin

This is great! You really got the style of the new Hogwarts sets down. I like the Room of Requirement and the Infirmary especially, and your Chamber of Secrets is very clever. If I'm not mistaken, the thing White Cat pointed out is the head of Salazar Slytherin statue, right? Nice beard.

The Ravenclaw common room is mentioned as having many airy wall and ceiling hangings. It would be kind of hard to incorporate anything like that in such a tight space, put perhaps a blue or grey cape could do the job? That behind a bust of Rowena would spruce the room right up.

Also, Aanchir: Canonically, the Hufflepuff common room is in the basements, right near the kitchens, because Hufflepuff is associated with the platonic element of Earth. It would be higher up than the Chamber of Secrets, but multiple underground layers are sort of a pain.

Very nice add-ons! really in keeping with the official set.

Just a suggestion but if you join up to the Harry Potter LEGO group on flickr and the LEGO group too, you will increase the amount of views you get on these pictures.

I like how Jack Sparrow is peeking over the roof.

If someone was to show me theese pictures withough knowing you had done them I would have sworn they were from Lego Officially.

A lot of MOCs while being great tend to be over detailed and do not blend well with official sets. I like how yours is nearly seamless.

How many hogwarts castles did you have to buy?

None! I just did a few bricklink orders, but mostly it was from my collection, I have had all of the previous hogwarts sets. Thanks for your feedback!

Nice work. I like many of the details you bring. Looking through the flickr listing was fun. :classic:
