Looking for an overview of different gear mechanisms

I love to analyze gears (is that the correct word?) and how they work.

For instance, the system used for turning the wheels on the Sandcrawler was so fascinating to me that I studied and played with it for more than half an hour

So I was wondering if there is a topic/site/document that shows or discusses these systems and not the complete models.

Also, if you know a set that has multiple or interesting gears, I always appreciate tips.
