42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
An L motor hooked up to pneumatics has more than enough power to easily and effortlessly lift the whole crane off the ground in no time with four vertical cylinders used for stabilisers. Compare that speed and power to as they are in 42009 where you are lucky if the stabilisers ever reach the ground before somewhere in the world, a new world wonder is formed by wind erosion! That's not what I would call an efficient use of the L motors available power.- 1,224 replies

42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well I think most of us here have built hundreds of sets and know how to build sets properly, but even here many of us had problems with the stabilisers, including me. I found the solution was to inspect each and every rotating axle for straightness, as I've found that 1 in 4 come very slightly bent in the box, increasing friction enough to stop it working. Using all straight axles the 42009 works ok. But it's a poor idea to have the motor so close to it's working limit anyway.- 1,224 replies

42083 - Bugatti Chiron
allanp replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not to get too off topic, so this will be my first and last post on it, but I would love to be able to buy the rigid flex hose and pneumatic hose directly from Lego in large spools! -
42083 - Bugatti Chiron

Yes the Bugatti is an excellent choice. This and the aventador are my favourites. It does feel a bit of a shame that they appear to be doing only supercars when there are many iconic car, off roaders and pickups like the dodge ram that would look epic on the box and have lots of technical functionality not found in supercars, like selectable 2 or 4 wheel drive and diff locks and so on. But like I say, the Chiron is still a great choice and I look forward to seeing what new parts come with it. -
Blakbird Collection Liquidation

It's sad to hear, but at least Lego keeps its value, so no amount spent on it is ever really wasted. Have you kept the boxes for your sets? On eBay I see many sets being sold already built btw. -
42083 - Bugatti Chiron

It's 4 wheel drive with a dual clutch 7 speed sequential paddle shift gearbox and a W16 engine. So worse case scenario we may get 4 wheel drive with a no clutch 4 speed sometimes sequential boat tiller shift gearbox with 2 V8s having sex engine, and a rear wing that can be motorised! -

The Porsche hubs could already be used for 4wd. So maybe we get bigger CV joints for greater torque and steering angles? -

But remember, the bwe came with many spare parts for digging and an added dump truck, so many parts not used in the main build. -

Normally I would rant about the baby blue colour, but being a Bugatti Chiron, this is one instance where it could look good. Also happy with the choice of vehicle as it is 4 wheel drive with 7 speed gearbox. Just hope there's lots of cool new parts to make those more authentic. -

@Vilhelm22 -
The Mack looks good, but right now there's nothing that beats 42043 so get it while you can.

Only used sandpaper once because of a crank piece in an engine being a tad too long causing it to not run freely. Axles should have lots of room though, but I do look for bent axles, these will slow down complex gear trains easily. I still think the main thing causing jerkyness with the bwe is the fact that the teeth on the quarter gear rack pieces don't seem to align properly where they join, they look to be too far apart making it hard for the little 12t bevel gear to mesh properly. That and also the design putting a lot of torque through very long plastic axles. The gearing down should have been done closer to the bucket wheel itself.

I think the bwe ring gear is visible, but it's not certain. -
Whatever it is, I hope it's 4wd with selectable drive modes such as 2wd/4wd/diff lock and so on to add some mechanical technicery (I made a new word, not as good as technofunctionomical though!) in a nice dark tasteful colour, NOT ORANGE OR PURPLE lol, plus all the new parts I've already mentioned many times! BTW, would a box that's longer than 42056 indicate the need to display a model that has a longer wheelbase such as the examples posted above?!

Technic 2018 Set Discussion
allanp replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
42042 came with an extra boom section and was shown on the box lifting that and I seem to recall that set having a pretty decent lifting capacity so I guess it was designed to lift that reliably. 42009 on the other hand didn't come with anything to lift, and it's lifting capacity is pretty poor. So I guess if a set comes with something to lift, like the large wall pieces that come with 42082, then it must be designed to reliably lift it, with some capacity to spare to make up for manufacturing tolerances and the end users inability to build their set properly! So I would guess yes, it can lift the first responder. -

It's not unusual, in fact it's normal to release a new part in only one set as they will surely use it again in the years to come.
