Survey: New parts and new colors
rodiziorobs replied to Bonaparte's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The difference is that that piece is as wide as a brick is tall, and the piece @peedeejay wants is exactly the width of a brick. I agree it would be a useful piece, but I don't think it would be a major game-changer. As for the upside-down cheese, cheese pieces are small enough that surface tension will hold them to the underside (or lateral side) of a brick if you dab the edge with water, although that clearly won't do for any long-term display. Is it purist? Eh. Now an inverted 1x1 with clip? Sign me up. I would also like a 1x1 round plate with center hole that has a 1M horizontal bar, in bley and black, please. -

I'm in the middle of the Hungry Cities series by Philip Reeve. I have only read the first two (Mortal Engines and Predator's Gold). I was going to stop by the library today for the third, but forgot it was Saturday and they close early. Bummer. They are pretty good, so far. Like a less pretentious version of the Golden Compass series minus fantasy plus dystopia plus steam without being full-on steampunk. It has its share of plot holes, but nothing that can't be easily overlooked; the only real eye-roller is how every character has some implausibly coincidental connection to another. But, overall, the author keeps up a pretty good pace in the narrative with enough interesting ideas and action that I'm hooked to read the last two.

21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V (LEGO Ideas)

It is only "illegal" () when inserting a studded plate between studs. The reason why is because the height of a stud is slightly more than that from the distance from the edge of a part to the base of the stud, so the edge of the inserted plate will never be completely flush with the brick you're inserting it to. This is true of both hollow studs and raised studs, and puts undue stress is caused to the studs going sidewards, unless you accept somewhat of a permanent lean in the plate. This, however, isn't stable and so TLG doesn't rely on it. With a tile, the stud collision isn't an issue, and the tile can be fully inserted. Again, it isn't a particularly stable or strong connection, which is why we haven't really seen it until working at this scale, with such a small decorative piece. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 17 Rumors and Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The bunny was definitely hard to identify, I also confirmed with the pointed ends of the hairpiece. As for the chef, go easy feeling for the beater; as someone else mentioned, its not hard to bend (mine is bent just a little, and since I had a brand new box I'm pretty sure it was my aggressive feeling that did it). I found the pie easier to confidently identify since it's a familiar shape. Also, Corn Guy's squarish face hole is easier to feel than Rocket Boy's round one. The baguette is a dead giveaway. The dog is a confusing shape like the rabbit (except that he has tiny distinct feet), so go for the bread.- 1,421 replies

Marvel Superheroes 2017 - Set Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to Captain Nemo's topic in LEGO Licensed
Arena Thor needs an alt-face with his super excited expression like in the trailer. Thinking more about these, I will probably pick them up (somehow..?). I love the characters, and I remember skipping the Ant-Man one at first, only to not be able to find it nearly anywhere after that, let alone near RRP. I would hate for these to slip through my fingers, as well. Also, while still bummed about never getting any Dark Elves in Lego form, I am glad to be getting any Thor movie sets; I'll take what I can get.- 5,808 replies

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 17 Rumors and Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I made it to my local LBR store this morning the minute they opened, and me and three other guys helped each other find the ones we wanted. The staff pulled out two boxes and offered to get another if needed, but none of us needed them to. It was nice to get everything I had hoped for all at once. In the past I have only been able to get a few at a time, after finding boxes already picked over. I haven't checked them yet, but am pretty sure of my success rate: 4 Battle Dwarves, 3 Highwaymen, and 1 each of Baker, Butterfly Girl, Surfer, Elf, and Forgetful Retarius. I waffled on getting a Rocket boy, Retro Spaceman, and Veterinarian, but the Build-A-Minifig bar had a great selection so I put the money there instead.- 1,421 replies

Here is what my local LBR store (Murray, UT, USA) had this morning in the BAM bar: Hats Hair Heads Legs Torsos Accessories + stuff I missed the first time through There was also a blue bowler hat from the clown that I found later on.

Looks like time to get a part-time side job if I'm going to even think of keeping up this year. Seriously, we get the 1st Ideas sets to actually get me excited to buy them, more fantastic CMFs, Elves coming out with another amazing wave, the Thor Ragnarok sets, and then this!? The more I see of this set the more it kills me how I will probably never be able to afford it, and that if I could it would be hard to justify spending yet more $$$ on Lego. But still...

The sets aren't too amazing in and of themselves (except for that Fenris wolf--the design looks really sharp and I spy a plethora of exciting parts) but the minifigures in each are amazing. Or should I say...incredible?- 5,808 replies

Fact is, even though MANTIS didn't win, we clearly had more fun. Although when AGII comes around, will there even be the same corps? What ever will I do with all the lime green I accumulated over the past two years?

I would never have thought of using a technic beam instead of a round, that's pretty genius. Good luck, post it here when you're done!

LEGO Ideas Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
So I'm seeing this hailed as the largest Ideas set...but isn't it the largest of any set? I don't mean piece count, but actual height. Is there any official set taller than this? -
The best thing I can think of is to build several smaller rings of 1x2 + rounds (a few bricks high to hold them together independently) and attach them to a central technic axle using short axles and connectors inserted into a 1x2 brick with axle hole in each ring. If you tiled the top of each section then there wouldn't be any stud-gap, and the tecnhic axle connection would make sure each ring was centered. You could always hide the axle-hole brick on the outside with a bracket or ladder or something, or just position them in the back.

I didn't use any Oxi when I did it on my white bricks, just equal parts water and H2O2 (3%), put the jar on the windowsill in the sun for a day and it worked fine.

Wow. While I don't feel a need to own this personally, I am impressed. It looks really good in the pics and I look forward to seeing it IRL. Congrats to the designers, and also to everyone who wanted this, supported this, and is now getting it. The wait has long but worth it. -
Collectible Historic/Fantasy Minifigure Series
rodiziorobs replied to ElectroDiva's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
1. Witch doctor - a lot like the tribal shaman-type fig or even necromancer others have suggested, but with a shrunken head (baby head mold ftw!) 2. Fop/Dandy - gaudy printing with an outrageous hat. Go the KKII route with these and give me five in different, vibrant colors (with different hats, of course). 3. Troubador - simple printing with a new lute mold. 4. Maritime explorer - this one is probably doable now with the highwayman torso + Shakespeare collar. I'd love an armillary sphere accessory, but I suppose the sextant would do (in gold). 5. Falconer/Hunter - with blunderbuss and new arm accessory/handheld piece with a stud for the falcon to rest on the arm, not hand. But that's probably being too picky. 6. While not a minifig, I would like a peacock accessory. Give it several Friends-style inserts on the back for feathers (the standard feather piece, printed). I guess this isn't strictly historic, but I thought of it while thinking of the dandies (at least one of whom needs a peacock feather) and decided I wanted the whole bird. Add that to everyone's list of desired animals. I may come back and post more later. -
What was the last movie you watched?
rodiziorobs replied to EbonHawk's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Thor II Not as good as I remember, although parts of it are brilliant. It makes me relieved that Natalie Portman won't be back; she's one of the movie's many weaknesses. It also makes me even more disappointed we never got any Lego sets for it--there are a ton of missed opportunities there. Maybe when I find time to start MOCing again I can try to fix that... -

Thanks @cebelicamya for doing that! @Actor Builder I think the stock varies somewhat, but generally what you find at one store will be at another. I will be checking my local store next week (going after CMF 17) and I'll try to get pictures of the minifig bar if it's substantially different.

LEGO makes a non-ABS prototype brick
rodiziorobs replied to Master_Data's topic in General LEGO Discussion
There was a topic awhile back when they first announced their initiative: I think it's impressive. The article linked to in the thread above quotes some higher-ups at TLG and their remarks are worth the read. As for total sustainability and food vs fuel arguments, I would be interested in how this plays out. I know that ethanol subsidies (~10 years ago) had a huge impact on the market for corn here in the US affecting everything from Heinz ketchup to candy to cereal, at one point causing tortilla riots in Mexico. Of course, I expect a single consumer (even a large one like TLG) to make much less of a splash than a big government initiative...(sorry, not trying to get political here). Like I said, I'm curious to see what happens.- 38 replies

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 17 Rumors and Discussion
rodiziorobs replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Yeah, this happened to me, too. Brickseek said one of my two local stores had 180 (3 cases) but there nothing on the shelf except an empty Batman CMF box. It was late and no one was around to ask. (Although that's not uncommon for this particular WM--they are usually pretty horrible at stocking Lego--the empty Batman box was the first sign I've seen of those ever being there at all). I also checked at a nearby Target but only found some more Batmans and a ton of s16's. Since I was in a spendy mood and couldn't satisfy it with any s17's, I grabbed a few of those that I had missed instead.- 1,421 replies

I think this is probably the best place for this. I had no part in making this film, I just noticed it on one of the many blogs I check in with, found it very charming, and that it was worth sharing. The link takes you to the blog site (Film School Rejects), which I am not affiliated with in any way: https://filmschoolrejects.com/short-click-3f06771a5d5e

I guess I am in a kind of building-only dark ages: I still have an interest in the hobby, still keep up with the community (EB and in other places), and still buy sets/CMFs. I spend an hour or so the other day improving my hobby room so I could be better organized. Yet I find myself with little time for actual building, and when I do I don't feel driven to really work on anything (so I take on other related projects, like organizing). I don't consider myself in a true dark age, though, just a rough period creatively. I couldn't say what brought this on (other than just life stress in general), I just noticed it happening a while back and also noticed, shockingly, that I wasn't too upset by it. But it'll come back.

Latest CMF series impact on Historic themes
rodiziorobs replied to SirBlake's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I completely agree with this. While I don't really do army building myself anymore, I remember having a dozen or so generic knights as a kid (the scale mail torsos) that went well with pretty much every faction. With only main characters or very specific ones, it is hard to customize the story or setting (one of my problems with Elves: there are so few characters and they are mostly distinct). Lately, I tend to buy CMFs (as with most Lego) just for the parts. I am actually planning on getting plenty of the Dwarf for use in MOCs, using the accessories like the hammer and hair parts as actual building elements rather than exclusively for minifigs.
