Thanks... I had tried that one, too, wasn't really happy with the results.

Best so far... I actually tried that; they are similar to the miniland figure balloons except the miniland ones have an extra 2x2 round in the middle. I felt it looked too much like a giant club instead of a balloon, but you can't always get things to look exactly right, and I think that, given the context, it'll work.

Do you guys buy multiple of the same sets for play?
fred67 replied to Chri5kng's topic in General LEGO Discussion
You know, you're the only one who knows if two will be worth it... look for the pictorial reviews here in EB, you'll see it in exquisite detail. I actually do not play, I build things for displaying, but I can tell you that modulars have removable floors, so top floors can be removed to get to the bottom ones. Some of them have interior items, so don't - I believe generally they started off not having much for interiors, but over time they started adding furniture and so forth. -
Cotton candy... I think I've got that down.... inspired by Hagrid: When I built that HP set, I couldn't help but think that looks less like a folded umbrella than it does cotton candy. Thanks for the suggestions... I'm not adverse to minor modifications to LEGO... maybe I'll make my own.

Last Christmas my daughter and I built a Ferris Wheel together. We motorized it and everything (no, I didn't post it here, I felt like it'd been done so much better by others). This year we thought we'd revisit it, add another baseplate, and make a whole small carnival with a pony ride and clowns... but can't figure out how to do minifigure balloons decently. can use one of these Technic Ball Joints (in red... there's a slightly different style with lime and white): I put them on a bar. It looks like the figure is holding a giant lollypop. Upside down cone on the bottom doesn't help - it's too big. Moreover, the iconic look would include three balloons (or more) on slightly different lengths of strings: I've searched for lego balloons, carnivals, circuses. There's a technic used for miniland figures - I know because I actually built several clowns for for our local store's "Brand Ribbon," but it's much too large for minifigures. So... any suggestions would be appreciated.

Latest catalog confirms the 27th.

Do you guys buy multiple of the same sets for play?
fred67 replied to Chri5kng's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I own two MMVs. At the time I bought it, I thought it was the absolute best set I ever bought (this is before modulars and the Emerald Night, though). Speaking of the Emerald Night - one of the best sets ever to do in alternate colors. -
I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out, it does look ridiculous short. I didn't get this one because I'm not a big video gamer these days... I might pick it up when it's bargain bin priced, but that makes Elrond priced way more than I'm willing to spend. I guess I will look on Ebay or bricklink myself. Sometimes someone on Amazon will have things like this. While I really like that sword, I think the brickforge sword is about a million times more accurate.

Lego "Brick Friday" Exclusive VIP Access Event!
fred67 replied to mostlytechnic's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
Really? Where are you? That sounds ridiculous. I won't repeat the freebies since everyone got pretty much the same things, but as usual I did NOT see anyone at my store score 50% off, although I did see 20% (although I only got 10%). There looked like there was a thousand cards in that box, though, maybe more... not just a few hundred. I also don't get why you didn't get another pick-a-brick box. One was supposed to be free for being a VIP (and a friend - I brought my daughter with me and we each got one), the other is a reward for buying $75 for LEGO - it's two separate things, and I'd be pretty annoyed if I didn't get it. On top of that, while I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, I think the one box limit kind of sucks - do they not want to reward people for buying even more LEGO? You can buy $1000 worth and get the same "bonus" as someone who buys $75? Saying it's not fair is wrong - it's a freebie and we're lucky to get it (and franky. I didn't buy that much anyway - just enough to get the Christmas set, because even with 10%, it's often easier to find better prices elsewhere), but it seems counter intuitive to not reward the biggest spenders with bigger (commensurate) rewards. They also MADE us fill the pick-a-brick boxes we got for VIP... I had perused the p-a-b wall and wasn't interested, so figured we save them until after Christmas, and they said "no," that we had to fill them then. So we're filling them, and then they were like "Oh... you only have to fill one now, and you can use the other later" after both the boxes were half full, so we just went with it and filled them up (over 600 pieces!). I also felt rushed. There was probably about 35 people there, total, and we were all at the wall trying to pack our boxes. -
Lego "Brick Friday" Exclusive VIP Access Event!
fred67 replied to mostlytechnic's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
I know I used to spend embarrasing amounts on LEGO, but last year I made the decision to cut way back. I've probably still spent $1000k between S@H and my local LEGO store, but that's far less than I used to spend. With how many wealthy spoiled kids there are around here, I'm surprised I made it again - unless they're counting from when they started the program, then I could see me still lingering on the list. -
Neat... definitely appropriate for a micro-city! Nice job.

Lego "Brick Friday" Exclusive VIP Access Event!
fred67 replied to mostlytechnic's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
I'll have to go check the mail... was invited last year; I've severely curbed my LEGO spending, but I've still purhcased a lot this year. Hope I get the invite... I'd rather not "do" black Friday. Was already holding off on a number of sets to easily get up to the amounts you need for free pick-a-brick boxes and special holiday sets... I have off that whole week, so getting sets on Saturday to play with that week is definitely better than waiting until the following Friday. Whatever - I'm glad to hear they are doing it again this year and happy for whoever gets the invite. I mean, it wasn't "all that," and you essentially got the same deals as BF customers, but it was before the shelves were emptied and not crowded. EDIT: my mail comes real late; it's after 6:00pm here - but I just got my invite, so cool! -
Subscribed thread emails no longer have "new post" link
fred67 replied to JamesBenjamin's topic in Forum Information and Help
I hadn't seen your complaint before, I must have missed it. Probably related is that I have such a broad taste in LEGO that, instead of going to a particular forum, I just start my EB session by clicking on "View New Content." On the old forums, when I would then click on a topic, it would automatically take you to the newest unread post, but like you are saying with the email notifications, it only takes you to the first page. At least there is a "go to newest unread article" button - but I noticed that button doesn't show up on single page threads (and since I have my preferences set for the highest number of posts per page, you can get to over 30 posts without going to a new page). -
That's a great tower technique I'd never seen - I happen to have all those pieces, so even though I don't have a project in mind I will probably try it out just to see.
-
These are the ones that are better, IMO: These are from Stanely, this is a shallow one - they also have medium and deep depths, and they stack. The bins are removable, so you can dump. Doesn't help with "scratching," but I've never felt that was a problem.

Congratulations on a great MOC.

TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff
fred67 replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
And keep in mind, if you want something to play with on Christmas, Horizon Express is not available until January. You might get lucky and get it early, but I wouldn't count on it. I agree with Zepyhyr that, in this case, a complete basic set is a good starting point.- 578 replies

Nice - congratulations. I'm definitely looking forward to getting more ME track; I didn't buy curves last time because I'm overloaded with 9V curves, but I got a few double length straights and when those worked out well, wanted more - but you were already out of most of the track. I like being able to use brown plates, too. Looking forward to the availability of these.

I share the sentiment that I like the look of Big Ben's track a lot, and we'll see what happens, but I haven't given up on ME - I was quite happy with my first purchase, and have collected hundreds of 2x8 brown tiles (padding my Brick Link orders) while waiting for more ME rails. I'll be happy with just about anything - TLG is not serving our needs, so anything is an improvement.

That's fantastic - I love microscale.

Really cool! One of those rare cases where you mix old and new gray and it actually looks like that's how it's supposed to be. Congratulations - great job.

Lego Architecture MOC Great Pyramid of Giza
fred67 replied to Hass Kabal's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I supported it - the problem is there's no architect involved, no royalties to pay anybody (I don't think the country of Egypt gets royalties for likenesses), and so I couldn't possibly pay what LEGO usually charges for the small architecture sets. I mentioned this in a post on Cuusoo, too. I'd pay like $10. -
What OS are you using? Linux, and probably MacOS, should be able to use "wget" from a command line: wget --mirror -p --convert-links -P <dst> <src> where <dst> is the destination directory where you want it to be stored in, and <src> is the base url (http://harrypotter.lego.com). I'd try it right now to verify it works, but I'm using a slow mobile hot-spot. I'm sure you can also download wget for windows, too.

I voted yes, but frankly just to make it easier to find out list prices to see if something is a deal when I'm out shopping.
