I'm working on a octagonal tower using hinge bricks and plates. I thought I had it right, but when I went to put the roof on, it turned out the proportions must be slightly off. And, I don't feel like doing trying to sort out the math especially with the complication of the hinges. So I thought I'd ask here. If want the walls to be 10 studs long. How wide does it need to be? Bricks by the Bay 2013 (now with Photos)
Athos replied to Athos's topic in LEGO Events and User Groups
Digging through the piles of the bulk bricks in the lobby of the convention center was definitely a highlight for me. The games tournament was fun too. And the speed build of Orthanc and the Cinema just made me want those sets more. I'm hoping to go again next year. Steve -
I just snagged this set for $25 at Walmart. I wasn't really interested in it, but I wanted the Satele Shan figure for a MOC, I'm working on. I was pleasantly surprised with the set. It has a lot of nice parts in dark red and dark tan and orange. Plus the wings are nicely done and sturdy enough my three year old can play with it. I'd recommend it to anyone who is hesitant, especially if you can find it marked down. Steve

I really have no idea. Its been so long (almost 9 years) I can't remember. Steve

One, get a box Two, put your brick in the box Three, make her open the box And that's the way you do it Steve

Its a little too black, symmetric and square, but you've got a good start. Work on adding some texture to the exterior and you'll have something great. Steve

A time to promote and a time to congratulate... Steve -
The orcs seem a little too nonchalant about the whole thing... Steve

The Bricks by the Bay lego convention is being held August 8-11 in San Francisco. I'm planning to be in California that week on an unrelated matter, but thought I might attend. Is anyone else going to be attending? http://www.bricksbythebay.com/ I've never been to a convention, so I'm kind of excited at the possibility of going. I may even have to try to MOC up some stuff to display. The early registration closes Thursday... Steve

I don't know why it automatically changes my flickr links to that slide show. Lets try it this way. Steve

Here is a MOC I've been working on. I'm thinking about taking it to bricks by the bay, so I'd appreciate any suggestions for improvement. http://www.flickr.com/photos/37777874@N06/sets/72157634202483003/ Steve

I can't believe they didn't include Boromir in this set? Steve

The pasty is one of the signature foods where I grew up. We had a lot of Cornish miners (including my ancestors) who came over duing the gold rush days. We make ours with beef, potatoes, turnips, parsley and onion. I'm actually having one for lunch today... Steve

This is a great project. I apparently missed it when you started it. I've been doing the same thing with all my old Castle and Pirate sets. I'll have to check your posts to see if I can get some ideas. Steve

#26 (vecchi) = 1 point #27 (Kristel) = 1 point #35 (cecille) = 1 point I really like #7: the scale works well and the ship is great. I like #45, but I don't understand it. #32 is a great design, but it doesn't work as a vignette; it needs more. #18 is really well done too. #29, sorry emma, I can't give you a vote in all categories, I'm just not getting this one. #14 (vecchiasignoraceppo) = 1 point #20 (Kai NRG) = 1 point #21 (emma) = 1 point Pinnochio is by far the highlight of this category. I almost gave it all 3 points, but I wanted to recognize Kai and vecchi too. I really like #24, but it doesn't work for the business man to me. Same thing with #2. Steve -

One point to 7 (vecchiasignoraceppo), 12 (pillpod) and 27 (Emma). I really like #20, but I'm not sure what is supposed to be going on there or how it relates to the bagpiper. I also really like #33, the pool and lanes design is great but its just too plain. #18 is really good too. Steve -
Not sure I like Arwen's hair piece. Looks kind of goofy. Steve

It looks really good to me. I like the interior and the figures. My only complaint about it (and there is nothing that can be done since that is the color of Orthanc) is that it is a lot of black and I have a ton of black pieces already that I hardly ever use. Steve

They are quite fun. I just wish they didn't take up so much space. Probably should have said extra motor. I just picked up a second motor, so I could do up a MOC, without dismantling the Cargo Train. We have an old historic train here in town and I'm thinking I may MOC up their flagship engine. Steve

I got the yellow freight train today and put it together tonight. I really like it a lot. I love just sitting and sending it 'round the track and playing with the speed and switching the track. My only complaint is I'd rather have had another car or two, than the crane and truck. But its a lot of fun. I think I'm hooked on trains. I'm looking forward to MOCing up a train with the extra engine I purchased too... Steve

Of the ones I have cataloged through brickset (which is by no means all of them), the total is 1679. I think that may be just the distinct ones and does not include duplicates. Oh yes, that is right. Brickset says I have a total of 2878. Which is probably a little low, since I got a lot of figures second hand. Steve
