[Software] LDCad - LDraw cad

I forgot to mention before you remove the 1x1 cap again you need to ungroup it first otherwise it will also remove the last point. Thanks -

This is 1.5 Alfa 3 I take it?If so it is indeed a bug. I tried to improve the insertion of points somewhat in alpha 2 but ended up breaking things, I thought it was fixed again in alfa 3 but it isn't :). It will be fixed in the next alfa/beta in the meantime you can use a simple workaround. In the bendable part's submodel add any normal brick (e.g. a 1x1 plate) and press enter to edit it's properties. Using that dialog set the group to 'end' this will trigger the 'pneumatic' hose behavior just remove the 1x1 (cap) when done. Alternative is to use the 1.4b version for flex parts. Thanks for finding / reporting this bug. -

The filter will indeed always filter the content of the current group only. If you want to search a part inside the entiry library you need to use the special search group. It's the 'minifig with magnifying glass' one from the root group. Selecting something in the right orientation like Legolijntje wrote is usally the way to go, especially as it also helps when placing parts without snap information. You can also use the 'home' key while adding the part to reset its orientation to the current (relative) grid. In practice it is recomended to build as much at rectangluar angles as possible and leave angled stuff to submodels. This will prevent rounding error problems on large models like someone was having using LDD on this board a couple of days ago. -

I think nickless is right it is/was missing dependencies. It's indeed usually best to get the whole unofficial library. As for the submodels, I've been working on documentation about that on and off for awhile now. It's not quite finished but I put it online anyway. I'll extend the text in the next couple of days/weeks. http://www.melkert.net/LDCad/docs/advEdit Thanks. -

I've uploaded the Alpha 3 version. It contains mostly tweaks and bugfixes, biggest new feature is single instance protection. Any feedback is welcome. http://www.melkert.net/LDCad/nextVer -

Here you go: http://www.melkert.net/LDCad/docs/keys The new 1.5 ones aren't included though, I'll update the list once 1.5 goes to beta. -

Creating usable instruction manuals using LDraw is an art on it self, but it all starts with carefully placed steps. Having a step for each brick seems a bit much though (imho). You can prevent having to use the button by using the ctrl+ins keyboard shortcut. You can also move bricks to other steps afterwards (also in the reorganize menu). In the 1.5 version (still in alpha stage) it is easier to add/reorganize steps once the model is complete by using the source window. -
I really like the mercedes and crawler crane, its going to be an expensive summer :) The Mercedes has double rear wheels, haven't seen that happen for a long time.

Help wanted - can't edit preferences.ini

Right click e.g. notepad in the start menu and choose 'run as administrator'. Then use it to open the ini file and you should be able to save it. -

1: To make custom parts visible in the bin you need to register the location as a library location in the prefs/ldraw/search... dialog. Just be sure the parts are in a parts subfolder of the location given. An easier way might be to just place them in the official ldraw parts folder. 2: In LDraw stickers are basically just loose parts them selves. If you want them to behave as a single piece you need to put them in a submodel or create a custom part (basically the same but with the file at a different location). LDCad can help you with the submodel part by selecting both parts -> right click top open the selection menu -> reorganize -> move to submodel. After that you can add additional 'instances' of the sticker-ed part by duplicating the used submodel part. Hope this is somewhat clear as the recursive nature of LDraw is often very confusing to new LDraw users :) Edit: i forgot you can also use your custom stickers by placing them in the same folder as the model and then just drag and drop them into LDCad using the file explorer. It will ask to ether open or use them in the current model. -

Depending on what you want to create there's all kind of part authoring tools out there (sticker generators etc). You might also want to ask in the part authoring section of the LDraw forum as I'm not a part author myself. -

LDCad supports the TEXMAP extension but only at the part level (a render efficiency thing). But the extension is currently not used in official parts (or even unofficial ones far as i know) . It seems most part authors prefer the vector approach which is understandable as it (at least on flat surfaces) provides better quality. If you want to use custom decorations you could consider making your own (unofficial) sticker parts using the TEXMAP extension. -
I really like the model by the way :) Small notes: You seem to have forgotten to assign rubber color numbers to the hoses making them look like normal plastic. And there is still a reference to a (previous used) thread loop sub model.

I would highly recommend testing it first using a string or something, as the length's are approximations (sum of all segment lengths).

I don't think I will do a LDD import very soon, but that renderer might be interesting to export to as export is pending for use combined with animations. I was targeting this towards POVRay though, but this seems to have a similar approach. I'll have to research it thanks for pointing it out.. -

If you delete the templates folder (in %appdata%\LDCad if you used the setup, or in the same location as the exe if you used the archive) it will be replaced with the default contents the next time you start the program. -

You are right somehow I though you also installed the alternative stud.dat files to improve LDView's povray output. It's those HQ stud files which make parts like base plates go over half a million polygons. -

That would break the core part bin approach I've chosen for LDCad. LDD uses a single view upon a single tree displaying everything. Which forces you to scroll all the time. I've chosen to use multiple groups (sub trees) you can use from multiple views. That way you won't have to scroll as much just change the view to go from e.g. plates to bricks. In this approach searching the whole inventory is just another group, only difference it's a dynamic one. The way I see it parts are parts no matter if you find them through a search or some subset group but you will always get them from a part bin window view displaying some group. This even goes for models them selves as the recursive nature of LDraw makes them essentially large parts you can use like any other part. Do you mean the part bin window filter field? As that's the only non Windows edit box I can think of, I could give it a different background and or bevels but have to think about that as it isn't a normal edit filed it's more a label (progamming wise). -

You can get the latest clean LDraw library here: http://www.ldraw.org/downloads-2/downloads.html Just rename your old ldraw folder (if you want to switch back sometimes) and put the content of the complete.zip at the same place (while all software using ldraw is closed). I probably do a Alpha 2 this weekend. I've already fixed the known bugs but I want to also finish a minor feature. -

I forgot I made those limits hardcoded a while back, as those defaults are allready 'insane'. Did not realize the HQ studs would cause the limit to be hit. It does prep when using the studlogo2.dat. I'll reenable the custm limits for Alpha 2 (it took >3 minutes to load the moonbase plate on my PC though). Maybe you should consider using two LDraw libraries, one for the hq stud usage (why do you need those anyway? POV-Ray doesn't use them) and one normal one for drawing to prevent the long loading times. -

roland replied to legolijntje's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The above moon baseplate loading problems are caused by the LDraw library changes made when using Darats LGEO library. The HQ studs cause an massive inflation of 3D data which triggers LDCad's maximum mesh size protection, as such large meshes usually are caused by LDCad trying to stuff an entire model into a single mesh :) due to wrong header information. The problem can be fixed by editing the main.cfg file and increasing the vpmPotVCntLimit and vpmPotVCntAutoDisable values, but be aware loading times of the high polygon parts might be very slow. -

Weird I'd expected that to work, if you send me the logs I'll try to identify the problem so I can address it.
