Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
I kind of thought that this would be a building program that last throughout Book II, so a year and a half, similar to Avalonia's title system. I am sure in that time we could do 30 subtopics, with builds qualifying for up to three different subjects. Although, I did like the larger number, just throwing down a compromise. I think one of the reasons NM proposed such a large program was to keep everyone from having the exact same titles in four months (like Avalonia) his method makes it a little more unique and harder to earn titles. Other than the one title I threw around last year, Kaliphlinites don't have a title system, in a way it is refreshing if they only come once in a blue moon, but I think this system would be acceptable and is right in line with GoH's mission statement of telling stories and making us better builders. I can ask about the badge, but I am not staff -- I merely have the power to make your text disappear. (Think about that!) So no guarantees there. Art should be added to the lists of disciplines. I think Geography is different from agriculture, but agriculture is too close to landscape design -- so they could be merged. -
Great question, the three cards should be incorporated in one build. So, for example, if the first card was fortune and you were interpreting that as the characters past, the character might be rich in the MOC, if the second card was the emperor, you might make the character also an important political player, and if the the third card was the fool, you might have the theme of the whole MOC being the humiliation of the character. Like I said, the cards are very loosely interpreted, so as long as their is a good explanation anything flies.

Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Well that is not really true, Kaliphlin was the original diverse guild, as really there were only ever four types of creatures that were represented in Nocturnus before book 2, humans, orcs, werewolves, and undead... We had a slew of different peoples represented in Kaliphlin in book 1. Now Mitgardia... that's a pretty homogeneous bunch. -
Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
I really like NM's idea, that is something we should definitely flesh out in the next week or two and then create an overarching program that lasts all of book 2 based on it. But, while you all wait -- here is our first mini-challenge for this book -
Life and Death in Kaliphlin Mini-Challenge(s). In Kaliphlin a very popular gambling game of cards is played with the Wizards and Princess Deck of cards. The casinos at Lost Vega theme whole rooms around the Wizards and Princess deck, and any card player worth the sand in his boots knows how to play highs/lows with the deck. However, another popular use of the deck is fortune telling. It is said that the cards can represent the past, present, and future of a person if read by a knowledgeable fortune teller. Over the years telling fortunes with cards has surpassed crystal balls, dice, bones, and even some spells. Most children in Kaliphlin have an idea of what some of the cards mean. Below is a list of the cards in the deck, and their most basic meaning. The Major Cards: 0 The Fool I The Red Princess -- Often associated with bloodletting. II The Red Wizard -- Often associated with fire or burning. III The Demon IV Sun [[Claimed by Masa, 2 more claims left]] V Moon [[claimed by NM, 2 more claims left]] VI The Gambler VII Loving embrace VIII Justice IX Fortune [[Claimed by Eryn, 2 claims left]] X The long snake or the dragon, depending on the deck [[Claimed by Gabe, Emma, 1 more claim left]] XI The Blue Princess -- Often associated with vice XII The Blue Wizard -- Often associated with cold or ice XIII Death [[Claimed by Lego Drake, Eryn, 1 claim left]] XIV The Cat / or the Fox, depending on the deck XV The Emperor XVI Kaligem [[Claimed by Gideon, 2 more claims left]] XVII Hanging man [[Claimed by Lego Drake]] XVIII The Dog XIX The Tower XX The Judge XI The Sandstorm The Suits: Coins A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Black) Chains A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Black) Swords A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Green) Flowers A (1) - 10, Cup-bearer, Princess, Treasurer, Wizard (Green) For the most part, many of the lower numbered cards of the suits are taken out when divining with the deck. But a face card can hold certain meanings, depending on the reader. The First Challenge: Since the cards have so many meanings, one can interpret any combination of cards in different ways. Your job is to depict a scene in Kaliphlin that reflects three of these cards as if the character in your scene had just had his/her fortune read. You can either randomly roll the cards with some dice at home, or you can pick the three you would like to influence your MOC. Traditionally, the reader would pull three cards representing the client they are reading, the first card picked is a characteristic or past related trait of the client. The second card is a present characteristic or a immediate future of the client, and the third card represents a long term or permanent future. Three Princesses is often thought of as very good luck, while three wizards are surely a bad omen. There are many variations of the readings in Kaliphlin, but you will need to use at least three cards and let us know what they are when you present your build. To clarify, you don't need to illustrate a character having their fortune read, just a scene in Kaliphlin representing the three cards. The character does not have to be your sigfig. These builds should be no larger than 32x32 Here is a random dice roller to help you out. You could roll a "D30" and ignore the numbers 23 and above, with 22 being the fool. If you want to add in the suits, you would need to roll a higher die, which the site offers. The Second Challenge: I was too busy to illustrate the deck myself, but you can call dibs on one of the cards listed above, and make your rendition of the scene that should be on the front of the card. A card can be claimed by up to three individuals, but only one can be from outside Kaliphlin. (IE: DaMaxiums, Gideon, and Captain Beerbeard could all claim Death as the first two are in Kaliphlin, and CBB is in Nocty, but if only DM from Kaliphlin signed up for Death, nobody except CBB could claim Death also ) These builds should be no larger than 10x10 You can do either challenge or both. The Deadline: The Deadline for this mini-challenge is Dec 1st. Please tag your entrys with [L&DiK] C1 (or C2 if you are doing the second challenge) at the front of the title, additionally, please post a link to your entry in this thread. Prizes: There will be three categories, Kaliphlin member entries for the First Challenge, Kaliphlin member entries for the Second Challenge, and best entry from a Non- Kaliphlin builder. Each category will win a 70400 Forest Ambush. The winner will be chosen by popular vote via Eurobricks poll.

Nocturnus Tribes - A Murder of Black Crows

Jeeze, Nocturnus gets more terrifying by the minute. Ha, it was like all the evil was asleep for book one except for Dr. Rod who kept the light on.- 19 replies

Wow, that was just amazing. Great story, and some great builds illustrating that story. The forced perspective was marvelous. The vault was very good also, I recognized what it was without even reading anything yet. Great job. I guess the ball is in DM's court now!

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion

Gabe, keep posting, that is what we are here for. I am just amazed at that dome, and I am imagining something spectacular when you are done. The inside might be tricky though. If you have a lot of 1x1 tiles in various colors you could build mosaics in each dome panel. -

That is funny they made you change your fictional story... I didn't know so many of GoH were over there, I just never had the time to keep my stuff going over there. -

ANNOUNCING: Guilds of Historica Book II: The Civil War

When LCC was developed, I feel like that was a suggestion over there but no one wanted to make it official. I think challenges against one another in the future would be cool. -
In general the Tru sale would mean you are saving 33.3% on your total, with the mark up its like 20% off the total. More worth it on big sets or collectable minifigs (which the mark up is 20 cents). On Castle and other original non-TV series lines, the mark up is not as bad, but I don't buy the LOTR or Ninjago at TRU no matter the sale.

Geographically speaking, depending on the distance Varlyrio could be a sub-continent still, but since we don't have "micro-continents" on earth, I am not sure if there is an official term for something that much smaller than a continent (remember, according to NM's calculations, Historica is only about the size of France, so on its own it might not even qualify as a continent!) -

Skaforhirea? No? I had always thought historica was the name of the continent also, but if Varlyrio is also in Historica, they are on a subcontinent or separate continent altogether I think. -
Raising the Dead – Family Heirloom (Community Story Build)
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nightstalker, somehow I missed this. Alright, Paulos is impressed with your handling of the prior tasks. He has an special assignment for you. Within the city walls there is a tavern, the Black Cat. It is rumored that a man who frequents that bar at night knows where Petera is holding the spear. The man's name is Rexus, if you can get into the walls of Eastgate then capture the man alive for questioning, and bring him to Paulos.- 38 replies

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
You could start sooner, as you all know what is coming. I was going to suggest that since the University celebrates diversity of Kaliphlin and all lands that perhaps some of the builds should be "decorated" for various holidays observed by the students attending. The reason for the later start date is I have another guild challenge in mind that would last from this week until Nov 15th, but we could overlap them and start on Nov 1st. Keep us all with many options to build. -
The Very Short Tale Of The Nocturnian Spy

Again, totally awesome. It reminded me of the smoke monster in Lost meats the mask from Scream... Totally terrifying. I really like the colored ground, and I am envious that I don't have bricks in those colors. -

Wow, Totally awesome, Gabe, can't way to see the finished product. Which reminds me, we were supposed to do a part two university challenge. I think we will schedule that one as a "holiday" build guild challenge. What does everyone think? Maybe start it around Nov 15th and end Jan 15th? I will see if I can get permission to get some prizes attached. -

CBB, that looks great! I am also glad someone used that octopus bottom piece well. I look forward to that awesome MOC coming. -
Yes, your builds pack it in nicely. The blood splatter was good, that was funny! As for lighting, it seems that your white balance on your camera is off. Tuning this may make you pictures a bit brighter and the colors more correct. Still, your pictures are clear and presentable. I would zoom out a little on a few though.
