Heroica RPG - Quest #108: Message in a Bag-of-Holding
CMP replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
From the rules topic: 'Stunned - The enemy misses on the next DAMAGE or SPECIAL DAMAGE rolled for it. If nobody targets it, the enemy loses its Free Hit.' As far as I know it lasts until one of these conditions is fulfilled nowadays. -
1. Varies wildly. Look at Quest 82. having been the QM, there was like literally no wiggle room for the heroes are far as going places went, yet I don't think I received any complaints about it because there was a lot of choice and interaction within the liner plot. As far as my quests go, they're largely linear, but I offer as much choice as I can to the PCs. 2. You can't have too many different outcomes, but try and guide the heroes to the better/likelier choices. If you leave situations entirely up to their devices, they could end up going complete off the rails. As far as that level of freedom goes, I can't imagine planning something so time-consuming. 3. Again, it varies wildly. There's more linear quests than there are freeform. There's good and bad in both. I find there's more room for error in freeform quests. 4. That sounds annoying. My next quest is in a linear format, and without spoiling anything, the heroes are searching for the weaknesses of a huge boss monster. Maybe something to that effect would be better. I'd never force a battle that's meant to be lost. 5. Don't throw out devastating specials at random in the middle of battle. Hint at something in a passive special maybe...I recall an enemy in Quest 51 whose special would increase in power after each use, and eventually exploded spectacularly. 6. Sounds interesting but might get repetitive after a time. I try and mix up battle formats when I can. 7. Something I learned very recently in Quest 98: keep too many NPCs around the heroes and their characters get watered down. I have too many important NPCs to count but I try and space out their appearances as much as possible. 8. I don't think anything like this has happened yet. It's a big part of my next quest, though. I think it's an intriguing idea. 9. It sounds kind of complex, if you're factoring in the gauntlet of boss monsters that have to be researched and weakened plus the freeform map format. You may want to scale it down. I would consider signing up for this quest. 10. I don't think experience as a QM has much to do with it. Look at Quest 93. There were a ton of complaints about its size and scale despite coming from one of the best QMs around. 11. I would be happy to help out with whatever you need. But I don't do too many sets. And they're generally not very good.

You haven't listed any enemies as stunned. Also, is there any chance of autorolling until someone's in danger of being KO'd? All the enemies are jinxed, stunned, and confused or slowed, so I don't think they're much of a threat. Atramor brought his boot down onto the dwarf's chest, tearing the Pheles Kris out of its head with a slight crunch, and swinging at the Torpid Troll from the front row. "Time to finish up here. Ratabor, with me." Battle Order Atramor vs. Troll - Pretzel Thalion >Ratabor vs. Troll - Heckz -
That's what I'm arguing. I consider dealing damage to be the definition of physical attacks and spells. My intention with Alpha and Omega was to provide a mage's analogue to dual-strike. If an Evoker is using Alpha and Omega they don't get to summon two damn spirits because it costs ether.
-
Not really, since that doesn't apply to non-magical classes. I've always treated it as when one outright deals damage, THEN the roll is considered an attack, or a spell, or when they restore health it's considered a heal. This makes it easy to reason that moves like Steal, Posion, Satisfy, etc, aren't attacks and don't have weapon effects (like dual-strike weapons) apply, unless specifically stated otherwise. I use the exact same reasoning for mages' spells. If it doesn't deal damage, weapon effects aren't applied. That's why Grim Reaper doesn't deal weapon effects, as an example. Same reasoning for Internal Conflict. I'm not dealing damage, I'm halving the health of the enemy.

For future references, my regular Hits should be Critical Hits while I'm Chaotic, though it didn't matter that round. Atramor pulled his weapon from the halved corpse, turning it on the Hebetudinous Human in the front row. "Almost there, mates." Battle Order Pretzel >Atramor vs. Human - Thalion >Ratabor vs. Human - Heckz -
That's exactly how I thought it worked.
-
Now I'm kind of lost. Alpha and Omega works on spells and heals. If Sleight of Hand is considered a spell despite the fact that it doesn't deal any damage, would moves like Satisfy, Dragon Aid, and Pessimism be susceptible to dual-striking weapons?

Unless specified (as in the case of Alpha and Omega) weapon effects don't transfer to spells. But since Sleight of Hand is neither a physical nor magical attack, I don't think it would in either case. -
I don't think it was a hand. I distinctly remember someone getting disarmed. I also feel like an idiot now because I thought he was the guy everyone's going after in Quest 103. A handful of Wolfgangers from Quest 69 are still around.

I want to see this guy teach economics.

Atramor glared as the zombie tore at his shield and kris, pushing it back and taking a moment to recover. "Heckz, switch targets with me, he'll kill ya' in a single hit the way things are goin'. Monk, get on the elf, see if ya' can bring out an angel or somethin'. Everyone else, just keep it up." The regulator turned to the Mortified Mopagian, swinging at him from the back row. As good as this seems, I'm not unscathed, I still have the bleeding by 10 effect for the next round. Atramor stumbled backward, but regained his footing quickly, bracing himself as he pushed back the horde with his shield. He coughed up some blood, but otherwise seemed uninjured. "Now it's our turn. Everyone leave the troll; we'll save him for last. Ratabor, keep up the heat." He lowered his shield briefly to swipe the Pheles Kris at the Deceased Dwarf from the back row. Yeah, the aura starts immediately and lasts until either my next turn when hastened or the end of the round. So I should absorb Ratabor's damage and both free hits, and then my health should return to normal, keeping any health I may have gained (as long as it's below my max) by doubling it during the duration of aura. -
Doubt it's your PC. The editor just sucks. I have the same issue.

Atramor swings around, lifting up his shield almost impulsively, pointing the kris at the nearest enemy. "Of course..." "Monk, Thalion, switch weapons. Pretzel can dual heal through the staves while Thalion'll actually be able to deal damage with the one staff." "Ratabor, heal the human, back row." The regulator advanced on the Deceased Dwarf, swinging the glowing Pheles Kris at him from the back row. Battle Order >Atramor vs. Dwarf Pretzel Thalion >Ratabor heals Human Heckz -
Your first problem is that you seem to be storing your laptop in a garbage can. Take the lid off and place it on a desk and it'll work a lot better.

"Anyone need a spear?" Atramor slung it over his back for the moment and picked up the flint and steel, looking around with the Pheles Kris until he found Thalion, helping the mage light the torch. -

"Stuff is gone?" Atramor reached into his coat, cursing under his breath as he realizes his entire inventory is missing. "Damn it. Our stuff has to be around this place somewhere. First thing's first, let's get the hell outta this room." He holds the dagger aloft as he searches the body for anything of note. -
Congrats WBD.

"Typical..." Atramor wipes what he assumes is blood off on his coat. He carefully draws the Pheles Kris, hoping maybe all its gems and archdemon-ness is enough to maybe glow a little bit. -

"Well, what the hell is this? We have two mages, why are we still sittin' in the dark?" Atramor grumbled, wandering around for a wall, running his hands along it and any connected walls for a door. -

I think we got all we needed from the alchemist anyway. "Well, thanks, mate, but we gotta be goin' now. If you're comin' too Ratabor, now's the time." Atramor steps onto the snowflake. -

"You...deliver here? Who the hell is U'Reeves? Why does he need this stuff and what's up with this portal? Do you go inside or just leave it out here?" Atramor glances at Pretzel jump onto the portal, shaking his head as he vanishes. "Senile old bastard....someone head in there and make sure he don't hurt himself, I'll be just a minute."
