Historical accuracy of castle minfigs and equipment?
ziljin replied to ziljin's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Very interesting. The lego castle factions are indeed rich. especially the later ones with all that horse armor and extra armor pieces. I know cavalry especially heavy cavalry required lots of money to maintain. -
So many forestmen, I am jealous. And all the new faces look great on them.
-
, this time of Crusaders and 2 breastplate guys. Two of the helmets were broken but he offered a .75 cents discount. And the helmet looks interesting without the nose protector.

What's the best way to store minfigures?
ziljin replied to ziljin's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Hm I definitely would not want to separate them. I guess I will do the little bag thing since I should get many of them from mass bricklink ordering. most of them use those ziploc bags. But those cases + baseplate is a cool system mythos. And wow so many lego containers dedicated to army building! -
Thanks LandShark This is where it gets sloppy and convoluted as I add in every other faction without removing any of the older ones. Some of the Forestmen have become warped by the bloodshed the various kingdoms inflict among each other. They have become like the violent oppressors they hate. They are known as the Dark Forestmen. Although the Forestmen do not approve of their methods, they are still brothers and united as one. Forestmen focus on defense while Dark Forestmen are more aggressive. Amidst all of this fighting the more primitive peoples unite under the Bat Lord who calls his warriors the Fright Knights. Night raids are their specialty. Even more chaos ensues as armies of Ninja and Samurai arrive from distant lands to join the fray. The Lion Kingdom is now the dominant power and has grown even larger than before. A new faction the Leo Knights are formed to govern and protect the newly conquered lands. More primitive peoples unite under the banner of Cedric the Bull. They are known as the Bull Knights. They naturally formed a Barbarian Federation with the Fright Knights realizing how outnumbered they are. Magic portals open across the land as KKII Knights (WIP) and their enemy the Scorpion Knights from an alternate universe are warped into the area. Vikings arrive from the north and wreak havoc. Their ships destroyed by storms they have no choice but to join the Barbarian Federation. Wizards attempt to tap into the power of these magic portals result in chaos as hordes of trolls and skeletons flood into the universe. Lords who no longer believe in the power of the Lion King of protecting the realm leave and form the Crown Kingdom. They happened to settle near massive mountains and to their surprise an entire dwarf civilization is discovered. Learning of all the madness, the dwarves readily forge an alliance with the Crown Knights to defend against these new terrifying armies. A massive fleet of the Persian Empire reach the beaches. They are more interested in trade than conflict as they have their hands full fighting against the legendary Spartan Empire. Luckily for the knights the Spartans do not have any ships to reach their lands (AKA I am too cheap to buy some Spartans, too historical for my tastes, also I regret the Persians now). The Dragon Kingdom have long been a weak power. Taking advantage of the chaos they expand their lands. They form the Dragon Knights to serve as the main battleforce while the Dragon Masters are the elite forces and come swooping in the battlefield with their dragons. The Lion Kingdom respond to the Dragon Kingdom’s gain in power. The Lion King establishes a national army the Lion Knights. Now the King has regained some power as he has direct command over this army, while the Crusaders, Royal Knights and Leo Knights are still independent they no longer have the influence they once have.

I was thinking of a little backstory for my kingdoms. Long ago in the distant past the first peoples populated the lands. Their history is lost and may never be recovered. (Aka I probably won't buy any of them) The great kingdoms of the Crusaders and the Black Falcons were formed. The Crusaders are the founding father of the Lion Kingdom. As soon as they encountered each other they fought viciously. Some chose to fled the conflict and seeked refuge in the forest and became the Forestmen. They claim to found mentorship from the Elves but no one has ever encountered any and dismiss them as a myth propagated by the Forestmen (Probably won't get any elves but got to acknowledge them). They remain neutral but fiercely protect their forests. The wars between the Black Falcons and the Crusaders were so frequent that they required mercenaries to field their armies. A new mercenary kingdom formed called the Black Knights. Their mercenary soldiers were on both sides of the conflict. (since the scale male and breastplate minfigures are found in multiple factions!) Some of the Forestmen became tired of living in the woods decided to leave and formed the Wolfpack kingdom. A new kingdom arose called the Dragon Masters. They are the founding faction of the Dragon Kingdom. Now the three kingdoms fought against each other and formed alliances with each other and then broke them. The Lion Kingdom grew and the Royal Knights faction was formed to govern and protect the new lands. The Crusaders and Royal Knights helped each other in times of need but were mostly independent. The Lion King was losing power to the local lords but that was the price to pay as the kingdom expanded. More later.

I have become serious about army building about 2 months ago, and now I have around 600 minfigures and another 100 on its way. Right now they are just in a box with weapons and shields and capes on. Is that alright? Will keeping the weapons and shields in cause stress to the hands and weaken/break them? Right now I leave them in for convenience when I make my army videos on youtube. I did order like 200 minfigures from bricklink (half arrived already) and 50 from ebay so I got lots of these tiny bags. Should I use them to store the minfigures instead of them all mashed together in a box? And will the trapped air have any affect on them? I might be getting a bigger room soon, so I might just display as many as I can. But my current plan is to buy 100-200 castle minfigiures off of bricklink until they run out of the ones I want. I am sure I will run out of display space real soon.

Wow so much. That's cool to have them all using black weapons. I just use whatever weapons I have. And my some forestmen, crusaders, dragon masters, scale mail and breastplate guys, fright knights and peasants. Also horse bardings shields and helmets
-
So all of those "STOP USING CHINESE PLASTIC" was just misinformed hatred? Just Lego saving money on collectible minfigures and non 4 digit lego sets (as in the sets with 6 number ids)?
-
it's perfectly fine! So when are you going to post that army? Or it didn't arrive yet or is all in their baggies?
-
WOW boy was I wrong. the black plume forestmen was 8 dollars. the black feather plume itself sells for 10+ dollars !!!! Looks like I got it for a steal (relatively speaking). Though I am only looking at USA sellers. That limits my supply significantly no doubt. Well its already hard for me because Madoka and other mass army building lego fans already have hundreds of the old castle faction minifigures. And the other half probably mangled up in garbage dumps. I will try to buy as many as possible and then buy mass newer castle minfigures. My scale mail guys are already like 40 in number and will surpass my Crown Knight soon if they have not already. Those have been the easiest and cheapest to mass so far. and also some crusaders and royal knights. If I can get like at least 20 of each I guess that's fine. About half the factions I ordered already meet that quota. EDIT: And now my Forestmen army. Too bad I don't have any bows.

Yea I looked them up, they only had dragons. =(. Well the only reason why I am buying all the variants is because I bought every castle minfigure that was cheap from the stores. I was looking for random minfigiures and some stores had almost every minfigure as cheap so I just bought them all. I figured if I am going to buy every castle minfigure on bricklink, I guess its okay if I buy some of the ones that costs 4-8 dollars (forestman with black plume! might have been cheaper to just buy a black plume but whatever another forestman minfig even if its expensive!) I had 2 forestmen, and ordered 9 of them going to have 11 of them! I was thinking of getting a forestwoman but they are 16-20 dollars. Lame.

I started buying minfigures from bricklink by the dozens. pretty good. only the occasinal mifnigure has some flaws like nicks or faded printing or loose limbs. well loose legs is fine sicne I just plan on making them stand in formation, loose arms would be a problem though.

omg, so the vladek was 1.50 canadian?!?!? that's like paying 1 USD for it!!!!! even better deal!

How open are you about your Lego passion?
ziljin replied to Fugazi's topic in General LEGO Discussion
My uncle just saw my lego collection and was in utter disgust. Never experienced such a negative reaction. Good thing I only see him like once every five years. He lives in different state. And I thought my dad reacted poorly. He had a similar reaction but his tone wasn't nearly as serious. My dad probably doesn't care that much probably. -
What did I say about the scail mail? I only remember saying be a cheese and reuse them for multiple armies. As in put some crusader shields and put them with crusaders and bam crusader army, and then the same with black falcons, and Royal Knights. Artificially boosting each faction's numbers with the same minifigures. And then restore them to black knight shields and bam black knight army even though they will have appeared in four different armies lol.

Historical accuracy of castle minfigs and equipment?
ziljin replied to ziljin's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I read everyone's posts. Hm, I guess fielding a realistic lego medieval army would be futile and extremely costly. And good point about the surcoats being possibly on top of armor. Did they ever just have surcoats? Like cannon fodder infantry? Or did they just wear leather armor or just the clothes on their backs? -
Haha nice names. Baron Aslan is my favorite! Good point about the gstrings. But I like to pretend they are belts. Well the groin area can't be a belt but I ignore that. At first I found it to be weird but I like the color separation now. 3 vendors? Yea I know what you mean. Luckily I want castle minfigures from all factions ever! Well except Classic castle. I didn't get any of those. Not sure if I want to. Their printing seems a bit too basic for my tastes. Since I was buying up mass minfigiures, I was okay if they only had like 1 of what I was looking for. Since I could just buy others. Most of the ones I got are those generic scale mail and some breastplate minfiigures that were used by Crusaders, Royal Knights, Black Falcons and Black Knights. But also some Royal Knights and Crusaders. And of course getting more packages in the mail. Definitely going to make an army video or two every now and then. And here is my Dragon Masters army.

Awesome map dude!

Well that's true. But I see tons of those historical factions in historical miniatures and videogames and movies. They are everywhere. I remember those old cartoons and anime where the knights are all fantastical and unique and nothing like historical ones. Examples being King Arthur & the Knights of Justice, Berserk, Saint Seya, and Ronin Warriors. Well enough about that offtopicness. So I recently got some old castle minifigures. I think this is what I will do, not final but what I am thinking so far. Some factions I have zero or little of though. Lion Kingdom - Crusaders, Royal Knights, KKI Lion Knights, and Kingdoms Lion Knights as Lords. Think HRE but to a smaller scale. Dragon Kingdom - Black Knights, Dragon Masters, and Kingdoms Dragon Knights. Same as Lion Kingdom Black Falcon Kingdom - Black Falcons Crown Kingdom - Crown Knights, Dwarves as vassal Wood Kingdom (essentially pseudo elves) - Forestmen, Dark Forestmen Barbarian Kingdom - Wolfpack, Bull Knights, Fright Knights , Vikings Undead Kingdom - Mindless (classic) skeletons, Sentient (Fantasy+NinjaGo) skeletons, Mummies (can use persian gear to make "egyptian skeletons" to supplement mummies) Tainted (I want to say Chaos but Games Workshop would probably sue me) Kingdom - Shadow Knights, Evil Dwarves (Collectible Minifigures Evil Dwarf but that is a pipedream) Persian Kingdom - Persians Japanese Kingdom - Ninja and Samurai divided by their colors. No clue what to do with KKII rainbow knights. Might have to change things up to make Persian and Japanese Kingdoms less historical and more fantastical.

I am no medieval military expert. But I sometimes look this stuff up out of curiosity. And also playing a lot of Medieval 2 Total War might have made me informed/misinformed. As far as I can tell the knight helmets are relatively accurate. Infantry helmets not so much. I have mostly recent castle minfigures so I only looked those up. There is the rimmed missile troop helmet. It looks like a kettle hat but with extra protection. And the melee infantry helmet looks like a conical helmet but with extra protection. And I read that the kettle helmet is actually used by all infantry not just missile troops as Lego likes to associate them with. And sometimes was used to make soup. I know the viking helmets are inaccurate since vikings did not wear horned helmets that often in real life. But that is easily remedied by removing the horns. For the shields, I noticed when you google medieval spearmen they usually have oval shields (kite shields?), and medieval sword/mace/ax infantry use round shields or the heater shields (the triangular ones). As far as I can tell more armor = smaller shields or no shields. less armor like spearmen = big shields. While for lego, the small shields is used by all infantry, and the bigger shields mostly cavalry. And for armor, knights have heavier armor, and other infantry has less armor. lego does that pretty well. but most of the missile troops have scail/chain mail while the regular infantry have just shirts with their faction logos on them? The printing looks like the missile troops are better equipped than the infantry. But usually the missile troops has very little armor because it hinders mobility which they need when enemies close in and chase them. I know this is mostly nitpicking, but I wonder if other people have thought about this. I try not to think about it because when I do, I get bothered by the fact that I can't have mass spearmen equipped with oval shields (well I could, but the oval shields tend to cost more).

Well I always find it cool to see large amounts of minifigs. it's just if I recognize the factions its more awe inspiring for some reason. Perhaps nostalgia goggles. Like seeing a group of 5 royal knights = omg amazing. Seeing 300 spartans = meh.
-
Hm? Is it only historical factions? Maybe I am not looking hard enough but I did not see any of the lego factions.

Is there some sort of Castle Minifigure Faction Guide?
ziljin replied to ziljin's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
On one hand its lame that they have no distinguishable torsos, on the other hand its more realistic and they are pretty cool looking. -
hahaha sweet use of the lizard man. If only he was an actual lizard man then I could use him as a fantasy creature!
