I need to swivel!
AndyC replied to Sapphic Addict's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The arrow key rotation method only works on a piece you're about to place, not on what you've put down. If you want to rotate one of those you need to pick it up by dragging with the left mouse button, rotate it with the arrow keys, then put it back in place again. -

Thing with that is, a lot of the people going aren't going to be mega Star Wars fans desperate to see super accurate models (those folk all gone to ILM or something) and what they're expecting to see at Legoland is something that looks like it's made out of Lego. Now AFOLs may well know just how un-Lego like some models can be, like Emerald Night, but your man on the street has other expectations.

Instructions To Build ALL 30 Models Of The Lego Hobby Train (10183)
AndyC replied to AFOL SF's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Thankfully I only had to use them to work out which bricks were missing as LDD did a reasonable job of the import on the whole. I genuinely don't think it would be possible to build some of the models from that PDF alone, the old LDD HTML instructions bordered on useless. They're a lot better, though not perfect, in LDD4 and I'll certainly be making myself a new bunch just in case the process needs repeating when LDD5 comes along! Good spot on my wonky numbering, now fixed. -
Instructions To Build ALL 30 Models Of The Lego Hobby Train (10183)
AndyC replied to AFOL SF's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Using Holodoc's PDFs (a shocking example of how bad LDD printed instructions were!), the original LDD models and a lot of patience, I've produced updated versions that work correctly in Lego Digital Designer 4. Hopefully this might help anyone else who still likes playing with this awesome set! Details, including minor errors, can be found in the Official Sets thread at http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41226&view=findpost&p=911742 -
[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD
AndyC replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The following are modified versions of the original LDD instructions for the 10183 Hobby Train set, updated so that they all work in LDD4 with the exception of the notes below. 10183 Hobby Train - Theme: Trains 01 Locomotive 02 Caboose 03 Gondola 04 Locomotive 05 Locomotive 06 Locomotive 07 Freight 08 Locomotive 09 Steam Engine 10 Carriage 11 Locomotive 12 Locomotive 13 Locomotive 14 Trolley Car 15 Tank Car 16 Locomotive 17 Locomotive 18 Trolley Car 19 Locomotive 20 Switcher 21 Steam Engine 22 Train 23 Locomotive 24 Switcher 25 Train 26 Freight 27 Locomotive 28 Gondola 29 Switcher 30 Caboose Notes: Model 1 Locomotive and Model 14 Trolley Car Part 6140 Hanger, used on model 1 pantograph and at either end of the car 14, won't attach to part 30377 Space Skeleton Arm, so left detached nearby. Model 4 Locomotive Uses an illegal building technique, namely attaching 1x1 bricks with studs on two sides to a 1x1 technic brick via the side studs. Two black 1x1 with studs on both sides replaced by purple 1x1 with stud on 1 side, black pieces left by side. Model 22 Train Four 1x1 technic bricks don't fit in, I'm not sure whether it's strictly a legal build or just a spacing issue, left by the sides. Should be fairly obvious where they are supposed to fit.- 5,046 replies

I've been working on "fixing" the LDD models for 10183 Hobby train and discovered that at least one of the models actually uses illegal techniques that can't now be done in LDD. As part of the effort to preserve these instructions I've had a go at doing it in MLCad. 10183 Hobby Train Model 4 - Theme: Trains MPD File In order to do this I had to work from the rather poor quality LDD generated HTML that Holodoc made available, combined with what still worked when the models were loaded in LDD4. As a result the build instruction order is 'a bit weird'. Having to learn MLCad as I went didn't help much either. Still, I reckon it's better than nothing and I'm sure MLCad experts can use it to do far better if need be!

I'd get Green Grocer if all else is equal. Not only is it probably the best of all the modular buildings, it's also out of production and prices for it are only likely to get higher.

There's a version of Market Street in the 'Official Set in LDD' thread here. With a little playing around with the colour select and the paint tools you should be able to get a feeling for how it might look in other colours.
-
Could you resolve it by putting an old 9V power cable from the motor and then connect that to a PF extension cable within the train? I'm gueing that would be cheaper than getting a PF train motor from Bricklink.

Official TLG Statement on Leaked Images
AndyC replied to BrickWild's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Which is kind of TLG's point. Had you not seen the Maersk train, you'd have bought the Cargo Ship. Then when the train was announced you might have decided to buy that too. By information leaking out early it can harm sales of current products. As much as I love seeing leaked pictures, I can see why TLG get annoyed at scans from dealer catalogues getting out early when there is very little they can do to prevent it. In the case of things like the Maersk train set, where someone has plucked them out of the image cache on TLG's own servers I can't help but think they perhaps deserve it for not controlling their own IT setup properly. -
REVIEW: 8450 The Mission
AndyC replied to LordGalewind's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A little experimentation shows that you can get it to run under XP by enabling compatibility mode, it may well be the same for Vista/7. To do this, take the following steps: 1) Install software as usual. 2) Right click the Start menu shortcut for Mission and select Properties 3) On the Compatability tab, check the box for "Run this program in Compatability Mode for" and select Windows 95 in the drop down. 4) Click OK. You can then launch Mission by using the Start menu shortcut as usual. -

Where's the glass...
AndyC replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
According to the Bricklink page, the only piece it fits with is Part 6155 Door 1 x 4 x 4 Lift, not a guarantee of course but I suspect the glass was just never produced. -

AndyC replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Oops, rookie mistake. I think I must've read the peeron name chart wrong first time and then stuck with it. I did think it looked a bit washed-out. I've fixed and reuploaded all the models with the wrong brown, I think, though I've not bothered to redo preview images for them yet. I presume you ment part 4093 rather than 92087 (which isn't even a part) - not sure why I didn't think of that, re-uploaded with that changed. Unfortunately the cockpit is all one piece and can't be coloured separately, so the window has to stay an ugly yellow for now. The truck trailer coupling is a wierd one. It doesn't do that on the real model and mathematically it shouldn't either. I can't for the life of me figure out why it doesn't fit together properly in LDD though, I spent a while trying all manner of combinations. I'll add that to the notes, it might be a boundary bug somewhere. EDIT: Ah, got it. It's because the red 2x2 axle should be able to extend slightly further up into the anti-stud of the plate above, but LDD doesn't let it which is why the trailer sits too high. Judicious use of the hide tool and dismantling of the real thing confirms it.- 5,046 replies

If you go back just a little over a year ago you could barely move for orange sets, what with all the coastguards, garage sets and even an orange recycling truck still on the shelves. If anything, orange seemed rather over-represented. The problem with purple, I believe, is that it is difficult to produce a consistent colour, making it difficult and expensive to produce large amounts of purple parts without models looking horribly patchy. As a result it tends to be avoided except where absolutely necessary, such as in the Toy Story Zurg model.

Question - how to get access to LU Mode
AndyC replied to Konrade's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
It's worth noting here that "username" changes depending on what your user account is called (and in some cases isn't actually your username) and also that getting there involves navigating past hidden folders so you'd need to turn them off too. A far easier way is to find it is to use %appdata% as I described here which works on either OS and skips the hidden folder bit entirely. -
I love 'em. As a kid I never really even considered the redcoats/bluecoats as seperate armies (it honestly never even occured), so the Islanders represented a third faction. And they're just cool. What kind of pirate adventure is it if you don't end up encountering hostile native tribes at some point, eh?

Collectible minifigures. Keep them or sell them ?
AndyC replied to Eisenaffe's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Unless, of course, TLG release a theme which contains elves or spartans, at which point the one from the collectible figures loses a lot of appeal except to those people still hoping to finish a collection. If anything the more obscure figures like the crash test dummy might end up being more valuable, since they are unlikely to ever be in a theme and weren't the ones being hoarded. The series three figs probably have more immediate value, due to the blind packing improvements, but whether or not that value increases or decreases with time is basically pot luck. -
