Activate LU mode for all users on a pc
AndyC replied to rotnak1271's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
There's no global setting so it has to be done per-user. Group Policy Preferences would probably be the best way in an Active Directory environment. -
Large Scale Technic Cars
AndyC replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Even 8043 has a long blue connector pin used in a position that puts it and the beam it goes through under stresses that are strictly speaking allowed. It's not that big an issue, though left for a long period of time could cause damage to the part. Lego designers aren't supposed to let any of these slip into current models but every now and again one turns up. -
Sort of. The connector won't attach directly, but if you put a PF extension cable (which includes a PF<->9V adapter) inbetween you can connect the PF lights to a 9V motor or battery box.

I got one of these discounted just after Xmas and finally got around to building it. I must say it's better than I was expecting. The droid head is too large, but that's really the only thing letting it down a bit. As a build, I found it very enjoyable with bits and pieces going in all directions. The finished model looks very pretty and is much larger than I imagined too. Definitely a pleasent surprise.

Do you mean the two minifig hands, connected back to back by a very short bit of flex tube? Back to the X-wing, I think the wings need to be a lot bigger, if you go for a SNOT build the whole thing needs to be significantly bigger than minifig scale or they just end up looking really fat. Unlike fallenangel though, I don't like grey x-wings, it just looks too dark a colour. They look more accurate (to me) in white, even if that's slightly brighter than they should be. I do like how you've done the gun though, it's looking really good. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

LDD on iPod Touch
AndyC replied to Gregorovich's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
You can't install Windows on an iPad, even a jailbroken one, as it's a totally different CPU architecture. There's a youtube video of someone claiming to have done it, but it's a fake. As it stands there is no way to run LDD on iPad/iPhone. -
AAA Battery Box (88000) vs. Rechargeable Battery Box (8878)
AndyC replied to legotrainfan's topic in LEGO Train Tech
One other advantage of the 8878 is that it has a speed controller on the battery box itself. Not a big deal if you're using it in conjunction with the remote controller, but if you just wanted to run a model constantly at one speed (or build a creation where the battery box is in a suitable place for a controller) then it can be handy. -
General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
AndyC replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
I think that's more likely, a system-scale Black Pearl would probably be something a lot of kids will want for Christmas. As lovely as a giant IFS type model would be, I'm not convinced we'll see one just yet. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, of course! -
[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD

I'm almost ready with the latest index update, just cleaning up a few small errors. The following list is all the posts which need fixing before they'll be entered into the index. Please note than in some cases there are multiple errors with the post and only the worst offence is listed here, so please do take the time to check yours over. Exclusive Train 10219 Maersk Train (Exclusive 2011)
AndyC replied to paul_delahaye's topic in LEGO Train Tech
No it isn't, 8866 is the older RC train motor. 88002 will be the PF train motor currently only available in the 2010 train sets.- 379 replies

Instructions, old and new
AndyC replied to eMHa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well the low-tech way is to just skip occasional steps in the manual, but doing something manually that a computer could do offends the software engineer in me. I suppose going through the LDD offical sets thread has got me wondering how the effort of people reproducing sets digitally could be used to enhance the AFOL community. It would be more effort, but would only need to be done once per set and I didn't really envision it necessarily being the same folk producing 'hard' instructions (or conversely simplified versions for old sets) as those who might want to use them. -
The number stamped into the part is a Lego Design ID, which references the shape of the piece. This often, but not always, coincides with the Bricklink part number. The numbers at the end of the manual are Lego Element IDs, which refer to a specific part in a specific colour. I'm not aware of an easy way of mapping Lego Element IDs back onto Design IDs, let alone onto the Bricklink part numbers. I do know that Superkalle had to do Design ID -> Bricklink manually for his LDD Manager tool, so I doubt there is even a consistent reference for that step.

Instructions, old and new
AndyC replied to eMHa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There's an opportunity for an AFOL solution to this, of course. All you'd need to do is build the set once in LDRAW, marking the steps so as to build a digital copy of the existing instructions. Then steps could be graded (using some kind of agreed upon labelling perhaps) in such a way that software could automatically combine steps depending upon how difficult a build you wanted. -
[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD
AndyC replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I've been going through the whole thread as part of the latest indexing effort to try and highlight some of the worst offenders (there are some old posts that have images way over Eurobricks recommended sizes) so I'd encourage everyone to have a quick look at their old posts to see if anything needs fixing.- 5,046 replies

I agree with your sentiment, but perhaps the real question in that case should be "How do you promote Lego in a way that parents won't think of them as boy's toys?"
-
It does appear to have gained two videos, albeit entirely un-Lego related, that I don't think were there before. And it says 1 month and 1 day until the next LEGO space experience, so maybe that's all that was supposed to be there. Seems a bit pointless though.

1. I think all you need is an LDraw compatible Mac app, like Bricksmith. 2. I'd guess getting the bluish-grey pieces will be cheaper, though I may be wrong.

'Flagship' Minifigs in collectible packets?
AndyC replied to cambookpro's topic in Special LEGO Themes
And yet he doesn't even appear on the Series 1 packet. Hardly 'flagship' status is it? The prominence in the banner image of all figs may just have been down to colour balance or even just the artist's preference for the clown. I don't think there is any more to read into it than that. -
Fabuland was my first thought too, that and Castle were always the ones my sister's seemed most interested in. Dare I suggest that a somewhat de-<insert that tiresome argument> Fabuland would be even better as it would encourage the building element more than the original and the modern range of pieces are more suited to brick building some of the structures than in the past. As slightly stereotypical as it sounds, making hospitals as regular a theme as police/fire would probably help too. Girls like playing nurse. A significant proportion of our family Lego was always allocated to some sort of multicolour hospital full of apparently injured minifigs.

'Flagship' Minifigs in collectible packets?
AndyC replied to cambookpro's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I suspect the answer to your question is no, they don't have a 'flagship' minifig and any perception of 'better' figures is entirely down to individual taste. For example, I still think the S1 Zombie has been the best so far (though the Hazmat guy in S4 may sway that somewhat).
