Welcome to eurobricks Peter, glad you took my advice and joined Like I said on flickr, this is a great take on a classic set. I like the addition of a horse and cart as it gives a morking 'working' feel to it. Also the white and red tower looks nice and you've done well by building it on a stone jetty structure, as a lot of people have built big stone buildings on a wooden jetty, which just looks wrong. Great work, look forward to seeing more of your creations.

I didn't know he got banned, he made some nice mocs though.

Thanks, yes there does seem to be a fine line when it comes to building the top of the stern straight before it looks odd. I have thought about curving the top of the stern inwards, but its a smaller space and its a lot harder to hide the technique used. I really wish these ships had cabin/sterns like the ships you and everyone else builds as the constant inward sloping gives very few options on what works. I think there are ways round it. CGH and Bonapartes ship had a nice stern but they choose to not slope the back of the stern cabin. I think I can just just get away with building the white parts straight as I will go as high as I can untill it starts looking odd from different angles. Still, ive never been a shipbuilder, but Im going to build a lot of these and hopefully come up with a better solution on later models.

Thanks, this is a great help, expecially for the interior. I originally tryed making it using the tiles facing out technique, but it caused other head aches, so I went with the CGH technique. The ship is roughly based on the Golden Hind but I dont intend it to be the Golden Hind as I don't want the restrictions that gives me. This will be a English Galleon with its own name and one of many I hope to build. The Half Moon is another interesting ship and I checked out you're pictures to see how you did the stern which looks pretty good! These are my favourite type of ship and its a shame no one ever wants to build them. I think they are in some ways more challenging then the Nelson era ships that everyone builds on here. Thanks for you're helpfull comments and feedback everyone.

Another nice little moc from you. You seem to regularly build these great little scenes. The base stands out and is nicely done, its something that very few people tend to bother with but can really add a great finished look to a moc. The parrot e is another great detail, as is the turtle which is a clever idea, maybe try that with a brown hat if they make one. Nice work!

Building a city out of thousands of gold jumper plates? I think you're crazy! But these sort of ideas turn out well and it looks like you're off to a good start. I remember the cartoon well, ive often thought about delving into some old tv cartoon series for moc building, like Visionaries, Thundercats, Tintin, that sort of thing and this is another forgotten classic. The figs look great and it will be interesting to see how you pull this off, as pearl gold is a colour that doesn't have a large variety of bricks to choose from and I admire you building this for that fact. I look forward to seeing the end result!

Yes I agree there. I think what Perfectionist is getting at is that 90% of people who build ships use or vistit this forum, so we all can see when a technique is used that we havn't seen before. Perfectionist obviously worked hard on his ship and his technique with the hose's was the first time any of us here had seen it used and its probably one of the best ways to achieve the desired effect. So if someone else uses it on their moc without giving credit then other people might see it and use it giving credit to Piff. Then it eventually goes full circle untill someone comments on Perfectionists ship and says he stole the idea from Piff! So thats the point really. Like I said before, ive never been bothered too much about receiving credit myself, but I will always give it when I use a great technique from someone who I know came up with it.
-
First of all, nice ship Piff! You have made some great entries for the JRC this year, and this is another good entry, as you are restricted to only make a ship from the films, which is a lot trickier then being able to make your own where anything goes. So well done and good luck in the contest. Secondly, as far as this credit for technique goes, I can understand what Perfectionist is trying to say, but also see where others are coming from. The problem is, theres no way to ever know who really comes up with what, as theres probably people out there who never post pics on line but have come up with techniques long before we ever see them online. Not to mention the designers who work for lego, they have access to every part and new parts before we even get hold of them, so they have probably done it all before. We can't patent our techniques. However, it is the particular techniques we create and use that gives us our own styles. For example, I have a certain style known for its use of 1x1 rounds and detail which makes my mocs recognisable as a 'Derfel moc'. Suddenly a lot of people where copying it on Mocpages and other people were commenting that these people were amazing for coming up with that look and it made me feel a bit peeved as some were complete copies of my work. But, you just have to not let it bother you. At the end of the day, everyone on this forum knows who comes up with certain things. When I first looked at this moc I never thought that Piff had come up with the hull technique or the hose rail technique as I already know who used them first. Same as all the other regular members on here. We know who comes up with what. Piff has looked at different techniques and used what he thought looked good, so you should be flattered that people want to use your techniques. Thats how I feel anyway, I usually only give credit when I use something that is blatently someone else's infamous technique. Sorry Piff for clogging up your thread.

Hey, I found these while browsing this morning and they are most excellent. Built by GeekyTom who has actually been working on the new movie.

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
Derfel Cadarn replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
Agreed, there's no way the Lego set of the Black Pearl would have all that string rigging. The biggest disapointment is the fact that they are still using the bow pieces for the stern. The new bow piece is great as it doesn't have those pointless square holes, but using them for the stern just looks odd. They did re-release the BSB as a legend set so the original stern pieces are not that old. Bring the original stern pieces back Lego!!! In dark brown would be perfect! -
How Many Minifigs do you own?
Derfel Cadarn replied to Millacol88's topic in General LEGO Discussion
This makes me want to count all my figs to see how many I have got. But judging from the fact that my brother collected Lego for 20 years, then gave me his collection back in 1987, and ive been collecting ever since then, so im guessing thousands. I only really ever use about 40 of them regularly for mocs, most are in boxes in the loft and havn't seen the light of day for years. Ive amassed 110 new green draggon Knights since xmas, but I probably will never use them either. Its just an addiction. From looking at my setlists, I'd say nearly 4000, but then theres also all the factions ive built up through bricklink, ebay etc. I think I will dig them all out and take some pics. -
Thanks, don't worry, I have already planned to make the higher cabin on the stern like the one in the pic. I was going to decorate the upper part with dark red tooth plates which will tone in with the stripe on the bow of the ship. Hopefully the upper part will complete the higher shape of the stern and make it look like the picture you did. I hope to make a few of these ships with different colours, as tooth plates are quite easy to get hold of. I will probably do the next ship in standard blue and red. Unforntunatly they don't do normal green tooth plates which I wanted to use for this one. I'll post a next update when ive completed the decks.

Thanks for the feedback. Thanks, the shape has been a problem to get reasonably right. I havn't really worked on the bow yet as ive been trying to get the stern right. You say it looks weird, but don't give any reason why? It would be nice to know whats wrong with it so I can get it right. The straight black line has caused me problems. I have been loosley working from this picture: As you can see, the line where the brown meets the white is a lot straighter at the front half of the ship, then curves up towards the stern. Yes I agree, although I have to put the middle rigging platform in above the gunports, so it might look a little different with that on.

Hey, well I had a couple of free nights the last few days, so I decided to start building a ship. I mentioned recently that I wanted to build a moc based on the Goonies' movie, and thanks to some helpful members that gave some info on the type of ship I needed to base it on, I have come up with this so far. I have choosen to loosly base it on the Golden Hind. Ship building is not easy and it seems that when you change something that doesn't look right, it usually means that something else doesn't look right then. So after a few hours of constant changing im at last kind of happy with the shape. All the plates with tooth pieces will eventually be dark green with a second layer of dark red for the stern. This style of ship has caused a few headaches when it comes to the stern, as the cabin tends to slope inwards, upwards and come out at an angle at the rear, which is a lot trickier then the sterns on Nelson era ships. Plus that awkward balcony round the stern is hard to get right. This is far from finished, the masts are merely there to give me an idea of placement and I havn't yet built the platforms for the rigging. This is NOT the ship I will use in the Goonies moc, that will be built all brown. Also I havn't added in any gun ports yet, ive just merely placed the flaps so I know where they will go. This is just a ship to gain a bit of experience, but I will keep this model and fully rig and sail her, as this is my favourite style of ship. Well, enough chatting, here are the pics. Any help and advice would be great!

Which is your favourite base in the Pirate LEGO theme?
Derfel Cadarn replied to Marco86's topic in LEGO Pirates
Sorry, they are the uk names. I mean Rock Island Refuge and Imperial Trading post. I still find it hard to get used to the American names for sets. I think they stopped that now, and every set has the same name in country. Still, the BSB will always be the Dark Shark to me. -
Which is your favourite base in the Pirate LEGO theme?
Derfel Cadarn replied to Marco86's topic in LEGO Pirates
I would say the best pirate base is Port Jamaica and the best imperial base is Port Royal. I've still got my original Port Royal box and it's still got it's original price tag, £41.99 from Woolworths! -
The best LEGO sailing ships (minifig illusion scale)
Derfel Cadarn replied to Bonaparte's topic in LEGO Pirates
So many great ships! Im surprised mine did so well as I think it looks odd stuck between all those huge custom sail ships that CGH and others have made. Ive never considered myself a ship builder and dont have much knowledge on the subject, but Im gonna start giving them a try now. The time and effort that you guys go through to make these huge detailed ships with custom sails and rigging has really paid off, as these ships all look fantastic. Great job from everyone, expecially CGH and Bonaparte for setting the standard that we all take inspiration from. Great work everyone, this is without a doubt, the best lego fleet on the web. DC -

No she wont come in that set as she wasn't on board the Pearl in that film. If she is going to be in any set it would be a set of her hut or a scene from Worlds End. They havn't yet made any sets for the 3rd film, so they might be in a second wave. -
NEW! Who will come to the Event
Derfel Cadarn replied to Ras 74's topic in LEGO Events and User Groups
Im only 40 mins from windsor, so I won't need accomadation. I will be there for 1 or 2 days, not sure what days yet though. -
Thanks for the help and info guys! Thanks, these are helpful. From what I can see, the Inferno looks like a cross between the Golden Hind and the Mayflower. It has most in common with the Hind, but has the stern of the Mayflower as it lack the little fence/walkway that goes round the stern. I do like that look however, so might add that anyway. I think im going to use the Hind as my inspiration, as theres a replica in London that I can go check out. Thanks, I will deffinitly be building in minifig illusion scale, otherwise I will get extremly bored with the frustrating long task of building a huge grey cave to house it. As it is, for minifig illusion scale, the cave will still work out around 5ft wide and 4ft deep, and thats still a lot tedious BURP stacking. Im basing the ship on the Golden hind, and after doing a bit of research ive found those type of ships where a lot smaller then the big Nelson era ships that everyone builds on here. So im thinking 3 mid-section hull pieces would be about right. The English ships where much smaller than the Spanish ships they fought. Yeah its one of my favs, always wanted to build something from this movie. I was originaly going to build a small scene with the skull piano, but decided to go for the ultimate. Not sure what im going to do fig wise, but I know creating Sloth will be a challenge.

Im getting bored of tiled/snot water too, as I think you can get a much more realistic choppy look with plates and studs. Only problem is I have so many blue tiles and hardly any blue plates and bricks. Gonna have to start buying. The first pic looks good, and you have done well with only a small space to play about with. Studded water always looks better on a larger moc as you have more space to create waves and gradients. There will always be a debate between snot and studded water, I think both look good, but im leaning towards studs now although Ive been stocking up on turquoise tiles to use instead of blue, so might try that. Keep on trying with different variations of stud water and you will come up with something you're happy with. You're off to a good start.

Thats a great moc, so much going on and I love all the wooden platforms and stairs. The building is well built and the rocks look nice, but maybe you could add a few more grey colours to them to add a bit of texture. Other than that this is a very well built pirate moc!

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
Derfel Cadarn replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
That sounds good, the Dutchman would be a great choice for a large set as its got so much character and scope for detail. Thats true, and its odd that both the Imperial Flagship and QAR have a higher piece count then the BSB but the BSB still looks better and is built better. If they went with a similar design to the BSB for the Pearl then it could be a great set. But Lego seem to be really going for the 'open playability' look, like QAR cabin. So im doubting the Black Pearl will have a deck. We're just have to wait and see. -

Derfel Cadarn replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
Yeah I thought as much. Everyone seems to be expecting a large detailed BP but its not gonna happen yet. Lego will not put out a large expensive BP out while it still has the Imperial Flagship and the QAR. Like I said, expect the Pearl to be similar to Brickbeards Bounty, but better I hope. -

Derfel Cadarn replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
I will still get the QAR for the figs and parts, but as a ship its not that much better the Brickbeards Bounty. It would be great just to have have a ship built as well as the BSB. But I suppose those days are gone. Looks very odd without a deck and the open cabin looks awful, but then again, I wont have to look at it as I will be buying it for the parts, not to use for display. In that respect, it is a good set full of nice parts and figs. Same goes for the other sets, they are all good for parts which suits me fine, and the minifigs are cool.
