Lol nice. But I think Jack has bitten off more than he can chew here. Chuck Norris ate the Kraken for breakfast!

This is a great entry, instantly recognizable and full of nice techniques. The way you have presented it works well and helps set the scene. Good luck in the contest, your in with a great chance.

Big medieval landscape: BIG UPDATE on page 26
Derfel Cadarn replied to maydayartist's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
It's coming along nicely mate, looks natural and with some nice variation in the landscape. I look forward to seeing what you do with the buildings. -
I'm not making fun of you Beerbeard, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But I do think you were a little harsh on this set, after all, we have been crying out for civilian sets for ages and it's nice that Lego has listened and is putting more out there. I know it's not as good as design as MMV but it does come with some great parts including new animals which are a great addition for mic building. Plus we can never have enough cvilian figs!

Let's just casually bash an inexperienced kids moc cause it's not up to a higher standard. Sorry if I'm a bit too rough Cory, but you're an adult and that comment sounds like something a 3 year old would write. As for this moc, I can see what your trying to achieve here and you have got the foundation, you just need to build on it a little. Like others have said, you could do with building up the ship a bit more and maybe have some broken masts strewn about. The more you build the better you will get, so keep building and try using pictures for reference as that will help. Don't let certain comments put you off, there as a lot of experienced builders here but they all had to start somewhere. You gain experience over time, not in an instant. Have a go at building you moc up some more and post pictures of your changes. I'm sure it will get better and better.

'What is the point of a windmill' lmao. You funny guy. Quite essential back in those days. Nice set, to be honest, if I wanted a mill I would build my own(which I am), so this set is all about the new pieces, and in that respect it's a great set. Great for afols as a source of intereting parts. I will deffinitly be buying a few of these.

Looks very cool with an interesting colourscheme and shape. The masts do look to low for the ship, but your best getting advice off one of the members who know more about the subject. Also, the rigging pieces look odd as they don't attach to the sides of the ship. Apart from that, this is a nice effort!

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
Derfel Cadarn replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
Actually I'd love it if Tim Burton made a POTC film! The franchise needs a new look and feel to stay fresh, plus Burton knows Depp inside out, and being a 'Burton' film you can bet your life that Hellena would be in it and she would make a great quirky pirate! That would definitely get me back into the franchise. But anyway, this thread is about the sets and theme, so let me just say that even if we don't get any more waves, we still have some great mini figs. We are all mostly moccers here right? So if we want a certain scene then we build it! If you want Tia Dalmas hut, then invest in a mixture of dark and light brown tiles, get some dark green for the swampy water, some foliage and build away!!! Anythings possible with the huge amount of pieces and colours out there. Or if still have trouble, give me list of scenes you want and I will build them with step by step pics so you can build your own :) -
Those of you expecting a large D2C set like they did with Harry potter, might be disappointed. I'd love to see a large Dutchman set, but it probably wont happen. What your forgetting is that Harry Potter is a huge franchise and much much more popular and well known then Pirates of the Caribbean. To be honest, I think Lego were too late with this franchise. If they had gotten the liesence when the original trilogy of films came out, then this theme would have done very well as there was a lot of interest in pirates. Plus we would have gotten 3 waves, one from each film. But unfortunately it's different this time around. There wasn't the same amount of hype around the new film mainly because the majority of people just were not as interested. How many times are people gonna go and watch a guy with eyeliner acting drunk before it gets too old? Before I'm lynched by all the fanboys, can I just say that I do like the films, but I just can't see there being huge worldwide interest to keep making them. Which means Lego jumped on this bandwagon to late. I fear this could be the only wave we get, but I hope not as I've really enjoyed these sets.

Soldiers torso from London Escape pink print?
Derfel Cadarn replied to Captain Green Hair's topic in LEGO Pirates
Mine too, it clearly shows up in contrast to the white legs. The torsos should match the white legs, but there is definitely a pinkish tint. I also have the same problem with the hats, as it seems that both hats have what looks like a white scratch on one side. I'm in the UK and the set was bought in the UK, so it must be a worldwide thing. Shame, as the officers torso is a nice design. For the amount of money that this set costs, it's unaccecptable! -
That's what I like to see! A refreshing change from all the napolionic ships people build. I love this style ships and you have done a nice job here. I'm currently building a fleet of English galleons and it can be challenging to get the shape right. You have achieved a easily recognizable shape, so well done. The colourscheme and details are nice and I agree about the cannons as they were not as heavily gunned. Nice work, my pirate crew will look forward to sinking her!!! :)

I don't dislike the ship cause it doesn't look like the film version, I dislike it because it has nearly the same count as the BSB but looks far worse. If you can build something as nice as the BSB with that amount of pieces then this should be a lot better. I've never been a fan of the Black Pearl, but I think they should have waited to release this in a second wave as a bigger and more expensive set. Still, maybe we will get a large Dutchman set!
-
The figs look good as usual, but like others have said, it does look bland. But that's what I expected, as we had the piece count a while ago and it was a lot less then the QAR. Is it me, or does it look like it's built on the smaller hull pieces? Not bad, but if Lego can produce the BSB for nearly the same amount of pieces, then they should be able to do better.

Pirates of the Carribean Contest - ENTRIES CLOSED
Derfel Cadarn replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Sounds good and there's some great prizes. Not sure weather I will get time to enter as I've my hands full with a large project. Speaking of PTV, will that be returning? -
Hey mate, I'm planning on going to steam this year and was thinking of displaying some mocs. How does it work there and what do you need to go about this? I was gutted about Windsor, work said I would be clear for Friday off, but when it came to it they refused as they were too busy and needed the staff!!! It Looked good
-
Building the particularly difficult steam engines seems to be your thing! I've followe your Flickr stream for a few years now and I'm always blown away by your incredible builds. After you built the Scotsman, I thought you just have to build an A4, and I'm glad you went with the blue rather then dark green. This is pure class and I think you've nailed the shape as best as bricks will provide. I'm quite keen on building in the train theme my self, as living in the UK, there are so many quaint country scenes to recreate. I will definitely get a lot of inspiration from your builds. Great work, now build a dark red Coronation class :)

EB 2011 Windsor Event - pics & stories
Derfel Cadarn replied to Legostein's topic in LEGO Events and User Groups
I was really disappointed couldn't make it in the end. I tried right up to the last minute to try and get a work shift change, but work was to busy and wouldn't allow it. It would have been nice to meet everyone and it sounds like you all ha a great time. I'm not gonna miss another event that's for sure. Will definitely be at Steam this year. -
Thanks, go right ahead and use any ideas you need, your port is coming along really nicely and I look forward to seeing some more progress pics with it all together. Keep up the great work!
-
Now that's more like it! I always want to make colorful houses but I always end up using the tan/white and brown colourscheme as it just looks the most realistic. These houses look great and it's nice to see someone else not afraid to make them larger and cram in lots of details. There is a town here in the UK called Hastings, and that still has some interesting fishing huts. They are tall wooden structures with a winch and door at the top to store nets and other equipment. Some of those might look good and give your port some variety, so maybe you could look them up. Keep up your great work, a town full of those great houses will look awesome!

I thinkj what he means is, that this is the first newer ship he has bought and so he didn't know that Lego now use the same piece for the bow and stern. Which is probably my biggest dissapointment with the new Lego ships, as the original stern piece is far superior!
-
One thing ive always liked about your ships is the fact that you add these great functions. Most people just put all their effort in getting the looks right. Well done for being more adventurous and adding more working functions, I look forward to seeing the final result!

What was the last movie you watched?
Derfel Cadarn replied to EbonHawk's topic in Culture & Multimedia
The Kings Speech, watched it last night. A good film and I nice break from all the action stuff I usually watch. -
I never knew any of these threads existed! Well ive been listening to metal since the age of 6, so for 22 years now. Theres no question of THE best when it comes to metal, Metallica all the way, ive been lucky enough to see them nearly every time they play the UK, and even though they are getting on a bit their live performances still destroy any other metal band! Also I have to mention Megadeth as I think they are actually more musically talented then Metallica and in some ways they are like Metallicas dark side due to the history between the 2 bands. My top 10 list, and the only bands I listen to: Metallica Megadeth Led Zeppelin Faith No More Iron Maiden Helloween(classic line-up) Black Sabbeth Motorhead Slayer Alestorm Rage Against The Machine

The name brought me attention to this as its a Zelda reference and then I noticed you had incorperated a triforce at the stern, nice! The colour scheme really stands out here, as we mainly see yellows, black, and reds. Great shape and interesting window use on the stern. Like has already been said, some custom made rigging and sails would look great on this ship.

Hey peeps, I was browsing mocpages and found this great moc by Thoy Bradley. It really stands out due to the great tree and setting. I suggest you check it out! Remember, this is NOT built by me. There are over 100 pics on his mocpages, heres the link http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/266263
