News LEGO CREATOR 2014 News & Discussion
David Thomsen replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
A Creator mountain is an interesting concept... Can't wait to see pics. I wonder what the alternative builds will be... A mine shaft? Most likely. -
It's a bit uninspiring, especially the two generic pirates being the same... Still, good that they're keeping an interest going.
-
Hmm... Are all of the parts from pre-existing sets? Or are there new torsos? Hopefully pictures will pop up soon. Either way it's nice that TLG are still keeping Pirates alive somehow.

Excellent, I hope we start seeing more 2014 sets soon. I want to know what Creator Building(s) we are going to get. Or even something different... since they started including minifigs in some Creator sets, they haven't had anything like 4997 'Transport Ferry' with minifig compatibility. I'd really like to see them do a large Creator set with minifigs that isn't just a building. -
The hot dog vendor has this head here, it's not new but it hasn't been used in a City set before. I do like that even though this set is very small, it has two hinge parts and a few accessories including tomato sauce and mayonnaise. I think the bicycle should have had a headlight, but it's easy enough to get a spare one of those.

I actually think the bank has the characteristics of a very small Modular building, which is okay but on this scale doesn't have the same character as the sheriff building. I also agree about the teepee, I'm sure even the sails from the 2009 pirates sets had a more appropriate texture.

I think these are pretty awesome. The problem with most licensed sets is that unlike regular sets, where you can collect all of a theme and create a coherent 'world', licensed themes rarely work together like that, so you have for example in the Indiana Jones theme buildings from all around the world, and sometimes just the insides with no outsides. You can't build them all together and make sense out of it. These sets actually work together, which is fantastic, and makes me far more inclined to collect them... IF I had the money. Shame you don't see the Ranger without his mask off, but then I guess we'll never get a Bruce Banner figure, either.

This is true, the Simpsons would have very domestic sets, whereas Futurama would have rockets ships and stuff. Although isn't Futurama owned by someone else now?
-
For some reason I thought Joust was in the second year, I guess because there weren't any other sets in the second year so I kind of grouped them together. But it was the third year. I guess we'll have to wait until 2015 to see anything advanced out of this new Castle range.
-
From what I've seen, I don't think it's targeted at an age lower than the Monster Fighters sets, and they got the 'Haunted House' set. And since the 'Haunted House' came out at the same time as the other Monster Fighter sets, I don't see why there shouldn't be a D2C set for this new Castle theme in the year.
-
I guess it's too early to have heard about any upcoming Castle D2C set for 2013? Or whether there will be one or not? Or what it might be? Medieval Chateau? Monastery? Barracks?

News LEGO CREATOR 2013 News & Discussion

I think the brick-built garage door fits in with the Creator philosophy better than the sliding door would. There are very few specialised pieces, even the animals are brick-built when they could easily be single pieces. I think the tree house and the family house are going to look good together, they kind of make a family unit. But I think the tree house would have worked better in other colours, or using 'log' pieces... It looks a little too much like a mini Creator house on a tree. Maybe a fort would have been better... -

I love it, these are by far my favourite Lego sets because they remind me of the sets I grew up with. They are like residential City sets that don't have one-piece walls and other cheats like 8403 City House. And this one in particular looks very architecturally different from everything else. I'm so glad, after the Small Cottage I was worried they weren't going to do large Creator houses like this any more. Edit: Wow, just shows how out of touch I've been that I hadn't even noticed that pics of all these sets have been around for a while. -
Looking at the building in comparison to the Pet Shop, it's really tiny - the facade makes the roof look higher than it actually is. I don't mind because I think a cityscape needs buildings of a different height. I don't see much point complaining about the windows, if the cinema was fully enclosed the building would look extremely boring from the outside. I'd rather have an interesting building than a practical one. The only thing that really disappoints me is that one of the minifigs is identical from one from the Pet Shop, except her trousers are red instead of dark red. You can see in the group shot of the three buildings that the version from the Pet Shop is facing the other way, so that maybe people won't notice. And yes, I know it's very easy to swap out the minifig for a different one, but I'm one of those people who likes to build Lego sets as they were intended, which is a perfectly valid lifestyle choice thank you very much...

I expect people to be disappointed that the sloped roof is a facade, but then this is Hollywood, so it does make sense. Also as the 'budget' set of the Modulars they were clearly trying to save money in some ways. I don't mind the red carpet at all. I knew it was coming since I saw that the baseplate was red instead of green. But there really do need to be posters on that wall, or some kind of features. I'm fine with the amount of seats in the theatre. Everything is always in smaller quantities in Legotown. But I agree with everyone else that this should have been a side building rather than a corner building.

I never judge official Lego sets by what fans have made, only by sets that have been previously made by Lego. I think it's a bit unfair, otherwise. Lego sets are always going to have features that fans tend to avoid, and I think it works somehow - it creates a particular aesthetic. Like, Lego sets have a combination of features that are nice on their own, down seem like they should work together and yet somehow do. I think that's one way of putting it? Whereas fans tend to deliberately co-ordinate features that they know will work together, creating buildings that look more consistent and yet somehow have less soul. Okay, that's enough deconstruction for one day. I feel like I'm in university again, trying to find words to explain something I don't quite know what I mean.

Looking at the picture, I don't think the title of the film above the door will be editable. They'd have to do it on 1x1 square tiles if that was the case, and then the letters would probably be legible at this resolution. This set will almost certainly have stickers. Sorry, sticker haterz. What torso is that concession stand guy wearing? It looks like blue and white stripes with a red bow tie?

I liked the limo when I first saw it, but looking at it more closely, I'm growing off it. Something about the tiny windshield on the enormous bonnet, going down to the very low side, looks weird. Unless someone can find a car that is actually designed like this? I will keep it though, because I like my Modulars to be the way Lego intended. Also, the minifig in red is almost identical to one from the Pet Shop. Hopefully we'll see inside soon! Although considering the time period of the building, maybe the projector won't be inside it's own booth? That would make sense, given the limited space available. Maybe there will be a piano for the music, if this is a silent film...

Next CUUSOO set: 21103 Back to the Future™ Time Machine
David Thomsen replied to Blakstone's topic in LEGO Licensed
I am very sad about the Western Building set. I'm assuming they are talking about the Lone Ranger theme? I don't see why this would possibly be a problem, in fact if anything the Western Building would compliment the Lone Ranger. I'll have to wait to see what the final product of the DeLorean looks like. -
Non-Pirate Mini-Figures Useful for Pirate MOCing?
David Thomsen replied to Athos's topic in LEGO Pirates
I posted this earlier, but it seems to have been lost from the archive. I was thinking the torso of the Judge in Collectible Minifigures Series 9 might look good on a pirate captain. It also comes with a wig, although I think the one from S10 Revolutionary Soldier might be better. Also the Gypsy has hair with bandanna and torso with corset that might look good on a pirate girl. Also there is of course the new mermaid, if your Pirate theme happens to be supernaturally inclined. -
What do you think of CMF Series 9 teaser release by TLG?
David Thomsen replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Hmm I guess so... in any case if it is a joke I clearly don't get it, so I'll drop the subject now. -
What do you think of CMF Series 9 teaser release by TLG?
David Thomsen replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I don't expect artistic value, although that would be awesome, but I do appreciate professionalism. I just can't think of those teaser images as anything but the work of an amateur Instagram user. -
What do you think of CMF Series 9 teaser release by TLG?
David Thomsen replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
To be honest, I don't find this teaser very impressive. I'm not sure if this is a poorly compressed reproduction of the original image, but if it isn't, it doesn't seem as professional as something TLG could achieve. This is a company that produced images like this in the past: Which I find astoundingly gorgeous. In almost half of those Series 9 images, I can't even figure out what the background is supposed to be. I think a better way would be to fully reveal one minifig a day for sixteen days, or something. -
Which LEGO Pirate captain is your favorite?
David Thomsen replied to Captain Roger's topic in LEGO Pirates
So they do have different hair colour. I hadn't realised that before, I never had Ironhook and the picture on the first page is misleading. I love the anime-esque sound effects on that commercial.
