I am not exactly sure about what you mean (my English is not perfect, etc). My point : the Volvo license does not help to make a good looking Lego model. But it would have been the same with another license. The thing is generally to take the best of each brand, in order to get the best "Lego licensed" model, if you will. =) 8043 is a good example. There is of course some adaptations compared to real excavators, but still, it looks great ! There are some counter example, though. 8110. TLG uses a license because this brand is almost the only one to make that kind of vehicle. "Unimog" is now almost a common word to speak about that kind of vehicle. Ferrari are also a counter example. But it can be explained : a Ferrari has a very very strong identity. If you modify this identity, you ruin it. The identity of a loader in one brand is not that strong compared to the identiy of a similar vehicle in another brand. This is why you can have a better result if you "mix" the brands.

It is almost certain that a team tested several steering modes with kids. :) I guess they chose the most satisfying modes given what their observation on the kids, etc. :) I had in mind a different kind of stress. Not because they are some pressure on parts due to weight, difficult terrain, or end point, but because building a symetric system with LA can be considered as an illegal build. What I mean is LA does not move symetrically in opposite direction in an articulated steering system. :) (in other words, it is a pretty big mistake in an engineering point of view) Well, they could have made it with 1 LA on 1 side then. But this is meh on such a big model.

To a certain extent. And this extent ends where the concept of compromise begins. The compromise is a key principle, more in the Technic line than in any other line given the very technical aspects. And to be honnest with you, I think few people master this concept of compromise. If one day you have the opportunity to talk with a Lego (Technic) designer, try to discuss about that subject. You will see, it will be a very interesting discussion. And for sure it will help you with your own models. Indeed, before having bricks in the hands, it is important to understand what really is involved in your models (shapes, key lines, key parts, features, stability, playability, critical points regarding the build, etc) in order to define specifications that lead to the best compromises. Compromise also involves parts availability, part quantities, building standards, price range, instruction readability, and maybe even age range for a Lego set (and I am sure I forgot some aspects). edit : yeah, LA make a lot of noise on 42030 :o

Mechanism that stresses LAs as both LAs do not have symetric movements. Between 5 and 10 seconds to drive from the very left to the very right. When you turned right, necessity to steer left in order to go straight forward. Not intuitive at all. Servo is certainely not perfect, but it is the best choice for a Lego set. I have absolutely no doubt about that.

I built it last week. It is a great model, with awesome playability (servo for steering was the best choice to do, I have no doubt about that), and very very nice inventory. I think the price is fair regarding the content of the box. Still, I have mixed feelings about the model. It looks unfinished (and big size is not a relevant criteria IMO) compared to 8265. I am pretty sure that the model could have look much better with no Volvo license. The designers would have been free to make choices that look good on a Lego model (like 8265), and not only choices that look "like the real Volvo model". There is a subtil difference which is IMO essential when designing a Lego set : the thing is not to take a nice vehicle and to make it into a Lego set, but to take a vehicle and to make it into a nice Lego set. This is really a key point IMO. And L350F hardly enables that. As for the building process and mechanics, they are kind of boring. The whole model is almost a bunch of yellow liftarms (btw, making the chassis the same color as the fairing was a big mistake for a Lego set, no matter if the real model is all made in yellow). It is a great set, and it well deserve the title of "flagship". However, best Lego models have more to offer than "just" an awesome playability imho. Review on TechLUG very soon. :)

How long will it be around?

You feel too lonely with your Technic parts in the US. -
Well, I currently have no UCS project. I just did an UCS Desert Skiff last year ( http://www.techlug.fr/Forum/topic7785.html ). A Useless Cheap Series model as I like to call it. I will probably provide instructions when all the parts do exist in the right color. But for now, no UCS models are being designed in my workshop. Maybe I will change my mind one day...

Hello everyone, The instruction of my Republic Cruiser is now available. :) More pics and part list : http://www.techlug.f...-st10-anio-2011 We chose to make it in last because, as you may know, the model has some painted parts. We wanted the model to have as few painted parts as possible. I think Frousmoul did a great job again on this instruction. Moreover, if you want to put a Republic Fregate on your shelf, just change some colors and details, and you have it. Because this ship and the Republic Cruiser are very close. The price of the instruction is symbolical (10€). However, you can give more if you want to reward our work. PM on Eurobricks, FlickR, Youtube or, even better, email me at setechnic@gmail.com You can have an overview of all the UCS instructions here : http://www.techlug.f...-lego-star-wars Anio

Actually, think it through, and you will see it's not a rip off. 9398, MSRP 200€ : 1400 parts, 1 servo, 2L, 1 battery box, 1 IR, 1 remote 42030, MSRP 240€ : 1650 parts, 1 servo, 1 XL, 1 L, 1M, 1 battery box, 2 IR, 2 remotes. This comparison can also be done with 8043 (200€) : 1100 parts, 4M, 1 battery box, 2 IR, 2 remotes. 240€ is expensive, and it is a new step in the Lego Technic line. However, regarding the components in the box, the price increase appears to be pretty logical. And I think that the license has nothing to do with that. More generally, I think that licenses are almost free for the Technic line. Lego can offer a frontloader without license and it will sell as well as if there is the license. So, I think the policy of TLG with partners for the Technic line is more an exchange between TLG and the licensed brand rather than a true commercial operation. True. People at Lego are not stupid. They know people do not care much about this kind of license. And this is precisely the reason why I am sure TLG demands the license to be almost free on that kind of product.

No, he is not gone that far.

Dear Eurobrickers, Today, I did a very unpleasant discovery : a guy from Imperium der Steine (his name is not worth mentioning ) shares LDD files of the Venator for free. I think this is very disrespectful. Even more when we consider this : - the guy boasts about his LDD file ("Mine is free while instruction is for sale") - for an instruction which required a tremendous amount of work, we charge only 5€. Even a Chinese worker his more paid than that. :o I emailed the staff of the website, and hope they will bring an appropriate answer to that matter. Anyway, if you notice any other behaviour like that, I would be very grateful you to email me at setechnic[@]gmail[dot]com Thank you.

Hello everyone, The instruction of my UCS AAT is now available. :) It is a 140MO and 70 page instruction. Frousmoul made it with the help of Blakbird for renders. I think the model is pretty pleasant to build. It is not that complex, but still, there is some SNOT and some nice details. If you want to, you may also put minifigs in it. :) 2 cones are painted because they are not available yet in tan. I hope Lego will produce them in the right color soon. The price of the instruction is symbolical (10€). You can give more if you can affort it or want to support our work. To be in touch, you have a lot of options : PM me on Eurobricks, Youtube, FlickR or email me at setechnic@gmail.com at anytime. :)

Season 7, in a train, Howard alludes to R2D2 10225. Don't remember what episode exactly, but it is about Valentine's Day. Season 4, episode 19, Howard speaks about the Legoland when they drive to Tod Zarnecki.

Dear all, The instruction for my Jabba's Sail barge is now available. Mathieu completed the instruction yesterday. But it was a tricky one. Especially for the sails. They are custom made (computer design, then print), but they had to be made in 3D. This made things a bit more complex than usual as it required to design a new part. Philo was very helpful to make the part in 3D. Blakbird did a nice job too with the render. And here it is : As you may see, I also added a mini desert skiff. I think it is always fun to have an UCS model, with a mini model next to it. :) The desert skiff can be "opened". In there, there is a tile 1x2 wich enable to recreate the plank (relocate the tile 1x4 and add the tile 1x2). In the end, the model has 1,248 parts, which is pretty reasonnable. Technically speaking it is simple. Thus, I am sure that many of you can custom the model the way they want and modify the interior. :) We charge 10€ for the instruction. But you can give a premium if you want to reward our work. To buy it, you can PM me on Eurobricks/Youtube/FlickR or email me at setechnic@gmail.com at anytime. Anio
