Lego Creator Expert 10234 Sydney Opera House
rollermonkey replied to GRogall's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I think the interior of the big R2-D2 is one of the most drastic uses of odd colors where not visible. I opened that box and thought something was horribly wrong when I saw all that green, red and yellow! My SOH finally shipped today, even though I ordered it last Friday.- 127 replies

So odd that the Fall catalog is out, with the UN Headquarters nicely displayed (price $49.99 USD), yet no hint of it on the S@H website, not even as "Coming Soon". I don't know if I want to wait until October for double points on SOH and get this for free or use the 10% coupon now and get the Mini VWT1 and pay a couple dollars for this. Decisions, decisions.- 174 replies

If by "better" you mean, much, much higher priced, then yes.

The video announcement for the set (viewable at the listing at the lego.com store) shows the set's designer lifting the completed set with no flex at all. It's apparently designed with an internal support structure for additional rigidity.

Yup, it's 7 days past when he said he'd be able to resume building, and nothing. <Sad.

I was just visiting the in-laws in Japan and was hoping to find a set either native to Japan or exclusive. No dice, although I did snag the little 60-something piece "rock band" set with three minifigs as a consolation.

OMG, this thread is so full of win! I got the Architecture Space Needle when we moved to the Seattle area. Over the next year, I bought and built the entire Architecture line. I explained it simply as a part of my desire to be a structural engineer. Then came R2-D2 and the Space Shuttle... And just a week ago, Tower Bridge. I think my wife already knows, without my telling her, and it's better/cheaper than my other hobbies: roller coasters and saltwater aquariums!

Where are these rumors from? Marina Bay Sands? That doesn't even seem slightly appropriate for the Architecture line. I mean, it's a mall... And Eiffel at a smaller scale is going to be a tough sell after the Creator Expert version...- 174 replies

Neither the Tokyo Lego Discovery Center Lego Store nor the nearby Clickbricks store had this set. Both indicated that it sold out very quickly when released.

Just started this 26 hours ago, and even with sleep, eating, and going out for a couple hours, I'm almost done. So glad I'm done with the cheese slopes. It was getting OLD putting those things on.

Alas, I'll be in Japan until the following week. I'm 85% done with Tower Bridge though, so I'm ready. It only took me a day to get that far. I'd finish it tonight, but I have to get up early tomorrow.- 127 replies

Well... Since my Tower Bridge is arriving tomorrow, I should probably hold off until the general release then. (If I value my life, that is.)- 127 replies

I'm going to Japan next week. I wonder if the clickbrick store in Palette Town will have this?

Doesn't seem like it... It's release date is September 1st, and today is August 9th, with barely a whisper on the LEGO site.- 127 replies

REVIEW: 21050 Create Your Own Architecture
rollermonkey replied to JimBee's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I picked this up at the local LEGO store today, and I'm definitely impressed. I'm in college right now, studying to be a structural engineer, and as such have a thing for architecture. I have the entire Architecture line, so initially I was going to buy this just for the completist factor, but I was intrigued by the possibilities of the book. I also went to the B&N event this past weekend, and I like the brick selection. There's a few slopes and wedges in there I hadn't seen before, as well as the double-sided grooved blocks. Sadly, they didn't have the book available for viewing, though. If you are interested in seeing the book before you buy, the "instructions" for 21050 are available in .pdf form at the LEGO.com site, all 272 pages of it. It is essentially an introductory architecture text, introducing the concepts of sketching, inspiration, scale, texture, voids, density, modules, repetition and many more. TLG worked with world-class architecture firms including KRADS, MAD, REX, SOM, Sou Fujimoto, Winy Maas, Safdie and Tham & Videgaard. Real architects from these firms discuss concepts, then demonstrate how to use LEGOs to convey those concepts. In my opinion, the book is fantastic, and as soon as I'm done with Finals next week, I'll be reading it cover to cover. The book by itself would easily cost upwards of $100 in any bookstore as an introductory or Architecture 101 text. Throw in over $100 worth of bricks and it's actually quite the bargain. Incidentally, architecture and interior design concept models are nearly always 100% pure white, regardless of final intent, so the use of all white bricks is actually very accurate, and some of the firms in the book indicate that they occasionally will actually use LEGOs to represent buildings that they are designing, which is pretty cool. I'm going to say 4.5 out of 5, only marking down because of what I see as a decided shortage of round pieces such as cones, antennae and peaks to go with the slopes that are provided.- 55 replies

Ditto this. I'm in school for structural engineering, but I really want to do a focus/minor in architectural acoustics. In other words, this building is my Mecca. The wife saw me looking at this and knew there was no way I wasn't getting it.- 127 replies

Yeah, it was disappointing. The local store had about 6 or 8 of the 21050 set for sale, and the only person who bought one was the employee who did our event. Also: Toywiz is listing the UN Headquarters as shipping in September. Between these two and the new Creator Expert Sydney Opera House, I think I'm going to be getting a LOT of VIP points next month. :)- 174 replies

Well, the event varied greatly from location to location: Bellevue and Seattle got local college architecture professors to speak, the Woodinville and Alderwood ones were just people sitting around and building stuff with the new Studio set. Sadly, we didn't get to open a box and see the book, rather LEGO provided tubs full of the parts bags.- 174 replies

Wow. I can't believe I'm the first here to notice that 21050 was added to the online Lego store today as coming soon, on August 1st. Price is as previously mentioned: $149.99 USD.- 174 replies

Yeah, someone bought it at Legoland for $149.99 and posted the pictures at Flickr... There's a good closeup of the parts list in that flickr stream. Also, the book looks ENORMOUS, easily at least 100 pages. There are also some sorting trays/boxes in the packaging. Apparently they only saw one at the store, but at least they shared! I'm signed up for the event at the local BN at 6PM on Saturday. I'll let you know if they start selling these then, and if I can snag one.- 174 replies

Wow. That's pretty steep. Where on earth do you find this info? . . . Just went to one of the local B&N stores to register for this, and asked about the set. He didn't know specifics, but had also heard that there was a set associated with the event.- 174 replies
