That only makes the heroes more powerful. Instead of having to worry about guaranteed hits if they don't prioritize their actions, there's now only a 1/2 chance of something bad happening. Because 2 rounds or 10, it still takes the same amount of energy from the QM to generate the original battle. We don't balk at enemies that can one-shot a hero because they only have a 1/6 chance to do it. We balk at heroes one-shotting enemies because they have a 1/2 chance to do it. I'm not necessarily arguing against easy battles, but we're currently arguing about a sample size of 1 QM currently. I think balance is the key here, there's been a couple of quests where there were complaints about battles being too easy. Perhaps the fix is the XP system, right now a challenging battle yields as much XP as an easy battle. As a QM I always fear that other players not on my quests will feel that my party is getting too much XP based upon the difficulty of the battles. That's just it though, we'd need a logarithmic function to stats (ala Dark Souls) where you can certainly invest more in SP, but it ends up having less and less of a benefit after a certain point. Same could go for offensive power or HP, the issue isn't so much that people can increase SP infinitely, it's that anyone can increase it infinitely. Because level increases lead to the same increases in power and health for all classes, there's not a huge difference between them at higher levels. And when SP can be increased through consumables, a mage can end up having as much SP as a knight. If you stick to capping SP for certain classes or having it logarythmically decay at different points, the differentiation between classes becomes much more apparent. How would higher level heroes do more damage than lower heroes?

Agreed, without consistent enemies, one quest will feature rats at level 2 and another at level 20, you never really get better at killing rats. Granted some classes have more of an advantage for pumping up WP (hunters, vindicators, rangers, etc), but for the most part the main thing that separates high DPS characters from others are usually effects and elemental advantages. I'm not claiming the Free Hits system is the best, I'm claiming it's needed for the given roll system we utilize today. Your logic holds true, but it requires an overhaul to our current mechanics. Do people want to spend time going after little goildfish? In a live session, destroying a bunch of mooks can be done quickly and easily, in a play-by-post format.however, days/weeks spent on fodder battles can take time away from higher stake battles. This moves us toward a THACO or AC system (not saying that's a bad idea), right now aside from class features, all heroes have the same probability to be hit. The only thing that differentiates the tanks from the squishies is damage reduction. The down side to that is that overcoming damage reduction has the downside of doing massive damage to those without it and there in lies the problem. I'd suggest capping SP at somepoint then and reinforcing artifacts such that only certain "tank" classes can be capable of hitting that cap.

Typically it'll kick me out in the first 30 minutes or so, but I was just about to post the round this time.

Flipz is right, Free hits are made to help with enemy responsiveness. Since enemies only have in some cases 1/6 chance to do damage to a hero, 1/9 if the hero is lucky, 1/27 if the enemy is also Jinxed or if a Minstrel is using the Lucky Chant, QM's either need to make their enemies hit like a truck for that one time they actually hit, or allow them to do guaranteed damage/effects with free hits in certain circumstances through Free Hits. Free hits can still be mitigated through proper battle order, but I don't think they should change without a serious overhaul to the way targeting works.

The heroes pour out of the Magpie on to the beach of the Harbor facing up against nearly insurmountable odds. High above, Dyric does his best to keep the sailors at bay as Torc and company land on the outer wall ready to destroy more of the cannons. The heroes continue to fend off the dragon horde, sniping each drake one by one. Grappling hooks settle on the deck as the Magpie is pulled onto the harbor beach, scuttling the ships hull upon the rocky shore. High above Dyric and Kiray work to dismantle the tower cannons. The assassin mows down the sailor swashbucklers as Kiray engages a defensive aura only to be struck down by the incoming cannon fire. Right there with you. The best way I've thought to approach things like this is in the sense of the narrative. Yes, all the heroes tried to scramble onto Torc, but the windy gale prevented them from gaining purchase as the dragon was blown off course. Heroes that end up attacking the next enemy down the list after their first target was destroyed, mistime their swings or miscast their spells. It adds a sense of realism. Battles have unfortunately become puzzles and not areas for role-play, heroes are looked down upon for not making the most optimized decision and when that optimized decision takes more than 5 minutes to figure out, some players would rather just check out and let someone else figure out what they should do. It's a flaw of the system and unfortunately not one that can easily be fixed, but certainly a learning for any future endeavors.

Fort freedom sailors begin to gather upon the beach. Several of the heroes make a mad dash for Torc, but the dragon and her rider are blown about by the sudden gale and join the vermilion wyvern and its riders high above the battle field. The heroes slowly begin to eliminate the remaining dragons as Althior burns the dock to ash buying the heroes another round before the sailors can close in. Cannon balls explode all about the heroes and several of their companions are struck by the exploding shells. The heroes prepare to disembark and charge the beaches hopeful to strike through the enemy forces. Link to full map Hex Battle Notes: Because we are kicking off essentially a multi-stage battle, consumables with positive effects will only last 10 rounds. There are five areas: The Magpie, Harbor, Outer Wall, and Upper & Lower Inner Wall. Specials/AOE/etc. are limited in their effect to each individual area. A hero may spend their turn to move to another area, however in order to leave an area there must be more heroes than enemies in the area from which they are moving. Targeting enemies in an adjoining area has a 1/3 chance of success and requires a ranged attack.
