Heroica RPG - Quest #90: A Trip to the Circus
Waterbrick Down replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
Cinna leads the party south towards Nerstew. As evening approaches the party comes across a small campsite. A Grumpkin and Minotaur seem to be unloading a wagon, while a skeletal figure warms himself next to the fire. A Nornish woman stands to address the newcomers. "It appears we have visitors. Be you merely well armed travelers on the road, or bandits ready to prey upon whatever helpless souls you encounter? If the former, then you are most welcome, if the latter you are also welcome for it is my policy that an overly gracious and accommodating host will always be robbed of his time and processions whether by friend or foe, so why not just skip the pleasantries?" -
Nope, just making a case. Ultimately it comes down to ideologies, I don't think either side is "right" per say, we just have different opinions on what is "fair".
-
So a rogue's ability to earn gold from the general loot pile is dependent on them performing badly? All other classes are compensated no matter what they roll, rogues are the exception?
-
Queston, if none of the rogues had stolen any gold in the last battle, how would the loot have been distributed?
-
What about alchemists? If they create something for themselves, will they not be given as many consumables from the loot distribution? I guess the point I'm getting at is that you're penalizing a class (not giving rogues an equal share of the loot) based on something that is their class feature, something they cannot do anything about. If we carry this to an extreme, say a rogue made 8000 gold in a single battle, would a party leader forgo giving them any loot because they had made so much gold? Now if the rogue is generous, he will probably forgo any of the loot, the distribution should be dependent upon the rogue's generous behavior and not upon the party leader's idea of "fairness". Yes their is definitely a place for strategic loot distribution, but most of the time I feel gold falls outside of that consideration.

Ethics has nothing to do with it, you're forgetting the point of the rogue class is to get gold.
-
No more arena for you after this one though, you're making my brain hurt with all the convoluted rulings I'm having to figure out. What's wrong with rogues demanding an equal share of the loot? Loot distribution should be a vacuum to some extent not taking class features into account, we do that with every other class so why not rogues? A slight variant on all of this would be to expect mystic knight's to forgo gold because they happened to roll a few enchants during the battle and therefor don't need the gold, weapons, SP granting equipment because they've already upgraded their equipment.
-
QM Note: In order for consistency, I will run this round using the example Flipz provided, though in the next iteration of the rules I think we'll need to be more specific. Round 8 of Arthur vs. Karie: >Arthur vs. Karie - Enchant Special Damage (Arthur is Hexed again and is no longer Jinxed) >Karie vs. Arthur - Damage Special Damage (Karie: 19+2 HP-(18/4=4 Damage)=17 HP, no dodge) >Karie vs. Arthur - Scroll of Sealing (Arthur is sealed and is no longer Hexed, -1 Ether.) Karie bids her enthralled opponent to stab himself with his most powerful weapon, unfortunately the magic of the Mystic Knight's helmet once again foils the witch's plans as Arthur is relieved of his hex drawing his jinxed sword. Karie realizing her mistake quickly hexes Arthur again, but not before he manages to give her a minor stab. Karie re-evaluates her strategy and decides that sealing Arthur might be a better course of action. Combatants: Arthur Justus Regulus VII, a Hero Who Is Actually Worth Something (played by Flipz) Level 29 Mystic Knight, 21-year-old male Human *Immune to Poisoned, and Badly Poisoned* *Only Receives One Negative Effect At A Time* *Sealed 3 round remaining* Power Bonus: 0 Health: 32/44 Ether: 33/34 Defense: 16 Gold: 583 Equipment: Sword of the Vampir (WP:18, user is Jinxed), Zap-Tap Badge (Artifact, Accessory. "Ah, ah, ah, just head straight south, I'm sure you'll come across one of the main roads." -
QM Note: Except the most beneficial thing for you to do would actually be the most beneficial thing to do, i.e. use the sword of the vampyr to erase your hexed status, etc.
-
QM Note: That is true, but it is technically up to Karie to decide which weapon you'll attack yourself with.

"Hey, hey, hey, looks like the yeti's got a good head on his shoulders. I think we'll just manage it." The barge did manage to skirt through the path in between the rocks thanks to Nagure's guidance all be it with a little scraping and groaning from the ship. Finally the party reached land, the ground beneath their feet covered in a thin layer of frost. "Well, well, well, folks this is where we part ways I guess. You shouldn't have any trouble finding Nerstew, just about an hour or two walk just south of here. I'm going to see to the animals before heading into town myself, but you all go ahead." -
One of these days I will need to play one of those games.
-
Just gave one in quest. When all else fails, build.

Round 8 of Arthur vs. Karie: >Karie vs. Arthur - Scroll of Confusion (Success, -1 Ether) >Karie vs. Arthur - Damage (Arthur is confused and attacks himself, Arthur: 32 + 16 HP-(12 Damage)=32 HP) >Arthur vs. Karie - Hit Special Damage (Arthur is Hexed and is no longer confused or jinxed) Karie steps back and recites from her scroll of confusion. Things become a little fuzzy for Arthur and it feels like he's on a ship in the middle of a typhoon rocking back and forth. The mystic knight stumbles around and even manages to almost skewer himself on his own blade, but his armor prevents him from doing any injury to himself. Drawing his other sword, Arthur readies an assault on the witch, but he is momentarily distracted giving Karie a chance to work her hexing powers on him. Combatants: Arthur Justus Regulus VII, a Hero Who Is Actually Worth Something (played by Flipz) Level 29 Mystic Knight, 21-year-old male Human *Immune to Poisoned, and Badly Poisoned* *Only Receives One Negative Effect At A Time* *Hexed 1 round remaining* Power Bonus: 0 Health: 32/44 Ether: 33/34 Defense: 16 Gold: 583 Equipment: Sword of the Vampir (WP:18, user is Jinxed), Zap-Tap Badge (Artifact, Accessory. QM Note: If it's not clear, Arthur had his WP 12 sword at the beginning of the round, so when confused he used that weapon on himself. On Arthur's turn, he withdrew his Sword of the Vampyr and became jinxed as opposed to confused due to the helmet, he was then Hexed which replaces the Jinxed effect.

"Well, well, well, still ain't going to fit." QM Note: It might be useful to build parts of the path physically to make sure the ship can actually make the corners you're attempting. -
Exactly, if it's not clear in the picture, the boat is 3 studs long.
-
The puzzle is built to scale, moving forward the ship cannot physically make some of the curves the party has lay out.

Round 7 of Arthur vs. Karie: >Arthur vs. Karie - Great Spell (Karie: 29+2 HP-(12x2/2=12 Damage)=19 HP, -1 Ether) >Karie vs. Arthur - Hit (Arthur: 34 + 16 HP-(8/4=2 Damage)=32 HP) >Karie vs. Arthur - Scroll of Confusion (Failure, -1 Ether) Arthur sheathes the Sword of the Vampyr and draws his sword from Dastan, feeling strangely confident in his abilities he lets off a powerful spell that visibly injures the witch. Karie seeing the seriousness of the battle, charges sword at the ready, but only delivers a minor scratch to the knight. Tumbling away the witch attempts to read from her scroll of confusion, but her wounds are too much of a distraction and the spell fails.
