Avalonia Guild: Homepage, Sign-up and Discussion
MikeyB replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Guilds of Historica
If you have a tower, claim a piece of land around that tower and start building and post it here. Some people have started a thread just for their land and have created their own map of their towns. Just make sure no one has claimed the land you want (might have to dig through the threads but if their is a tower, the a land around it is likely claimed). Here is a link to the latest to the thread of the latest map: Also, don't claim big tract of land! I imagine most people have been on busy with the holidays (and building their new sets hopefully!) but If you want to PM Jason I'm sure he will put it on the map as soon as he can. -
thanks for starting this topic. Like Khorne, I have always enjoyed maps and yours are a pleasure to look at.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I was looking for the same thing recently and would be interested in starting one up as well. Let me know what I can do to help!

Thanks for the great feedback! The learned the tree technique and landscaping from DC (and through some critics of my earlier trees!) I would like to own more brown tubes but they aren't cheap. I ordered a few black ones on BL but after I started using them, I looked on one of my shelves and realized there are four brown ones on the Viking longboat! I haven't totally cannibalized that set yet and only took off the brown hoses for future builds. (So now my Longboat sail is furled up and the ship is at anchor) As to the old tree, I build a stump for another build (which I abandoned) and like the idea, Driving down the interstate the other day through some pretty forested areas, I noticed a lot of fallen trees and thought If I could get i right, I would add it into a build. I think they came out okay. For the mushroom, I like the one lego has come out with but I don't own any yet but I like my little white ones. I enjoy creating the backstories. Who knows maybe Dorlin and Broslin will appear in another MOC in Circardia at some point. ;)

Thanks for the relpies. I like the way the wall came out and will likely uses a similar one in a future MOC Your right about the strings. I tried to put on some but I couldn't keep it from slipping off. But thinking about it, I could of used a black hand stuck into the hose at either side and that would have likely kept it the string from sliding off the ends....

thanks for the feed back. To be honest, I build this about a week ago shortly after finished my Albion Armorer, but with the holidays and lack of time to set up my "studio" (and the wife using the camera) I continued to build and then just shot all three MOC at one time. I like the details on the above the windows on the side of the tan building but I am not really happy with the way some of the tan bricks show through at the corners but Ill work on fixing that in my next build!

Like Capt BeerBeard, (I like how you are expanding on your tower) I too have been busy. I build these over the last week or so but haven't been able to shoot photos of them until today. I present two Avalonia builds, for Siege Expert and Prince of the Forest The Brothers, Dorlin and Broslin "Prince of the Forest" a Circardian Light Ballista "Siege Expert" I also did a free build, A row house in the Hamlet of Circardia. I have begun a map of the hamlet and will start a thread with all my MOCs, Circardian history, main characters in the next week or two. thanks for looking and comments and critics are always welcome! -
In Avalonia, two brothers, Dorlin and Broslin have been caught on the wrong side of the law one too many times! they have set up residence in a cave behind a waterfall. They have both become expert archers, hunters and can fade into the forest and disappear effortlessly. Somewhere in Avalonia Dorlin stands by the hidden entrance to the home behind the waterfall Broslin looks at a map of the lands Dorlin stood at the edge of the table looking down at the map Broslin had laid out. "I have heard there is a Lord in the west, at the edge of the Enchanted Forest that will give those looking to forget their past and wanting start anew a second chance in his guard." Broslin nodded his head, "I have heard he will give them a new identity. While the trials are tough to join, his loyalty is unwavering if you pass them." "I tire of this life." sighed Dorlin. "I would gladly pledge my oath of loyalty to such a man if it is true." "I agree," Broslin spoke softly. "I know I have not agreed in the past but to be able to hold my head high again would bring me such happiness." "It is settled then, we start preparing for our journey to Circardia to join Lord Arlindus and his Phoenix Guard!" exclaimed Drolin.

In the Hamlet of Circardia, Felden the Baker and Gorlan the Apothecary live side by side. Felden and his wife, Lyndia run a small bakery, providing fresh bread to the town. Gorlan is known to be somewhat grumpy at times but his knowledge of forest herbs and remedies have helped cure many of the citizens ailments. Gorlan is preparing to muddle some herbs and bone together to settle a customers stomach pains Felden brings out a fresh loaf. Even Gorlan can't help but smile at the smell of fresh bread! Using techniques from DC's guide and a few other builders here, I wanted to expand on my town. I had some of the blue from a PaB wall and wanted to try something besides tan. I like the way it looks but I realize the houses have the same color scheme as the Medieval Village. Still I an pretty happy overall. I also have mapped out the Hamlet of Circardia and plan on starting a thread linking all the buildings to their respective MOC threads. I also wanted to expand on the back stories of Circardia and Lord Arlindus (and his father Orthus) as well. C&C welcome!

The Phoenix Guard is out training on their newly designed light ballista. The heavy forest in the Enchanted Forest near Circardia make the light ballista an ideal siege weapon. It size allows it to be disassembled quickly and two can be carried on a draft horse. Easily manned by a crew of two, it can be mounted in defensively positions as well as used in mass for an effective attack. (for the Avalonia Siege Expert mini challenge) Comments and Critics welcome

Good reply ZCerberus, Like Z said, I only started building MOC when the guild project started. I have been a long time fan of lego and lurked here and other forums for years, admiring peoples creations. I guess I always knew I wanted to build and even though the closest Lego store is four hours away, whenever I found myself near a lego store I would fill a Cup up with plant leaves, brown tiles or the like. When DC started his guide it opened my eyes to the techniques behind some of the great builds and I made a couple small orders through bricklink and was on my way. I often just look at others builds online and get some ideas or try to recreate a technique. Right now, there is a fabulous gazebo that I would love to rebuild but I can't figure out the roof. the other issue I have right now is I have literally years of ideas in my head and it is hard to build them all considering time, money and . I love hearing comments and constructive criticism on my builds. People take pride in what they build (rightfully so) and they can take critics very personal. I think that I found out long ago in my other life (I was a combat photographer in the military and we did lots of Critic sessions on photos) that peoples critics are just their opinion and aren't directed toward me personally. With that said, it is always better to offer a solution with your critic than just say 'I don't like it." Another good tip I have found is details really can make the MOC come alive. For my Durham the Beekeeper build, I came up with the skeps (beehives)then added the barrel shed and the jars of honey and go from their. that seems to be the way I work now. come up with some detail peices and then build around them. An not stray too far off topic, Z is right, what can you say about DC stuff other than "Awesome!" Too often people don't have the time or energy to share their ideas. Others want to keep their techniques to themselves. In the end DC guide has inspired many people

Nicely done. It does have an elvish feel about it. is the piece at the front from a Bionicle set?
-
Incredible! Love the details of this build. some many good solutions and ideas!
-
Awesome! I hope one day to be able to take on (and have the pieces) to do something this large and beautiful! As I said before, your guide (and the guild project) inspired me to starting building MOCs. For that, Thank You and I always look forward to your next build!
-
A very classic castle feel to your farm, nicely done! I especially like the chicken and her chicks (although I thought it was a goose and goslings until I read the caption) Looks like the farmer isn't too happy with them though!
-
Nicely done! Nice use of the paddle in the corner. I also really like the way you handled the base of the building. Looks like you ran out of tiles for the door though! and you have the same issue I have with getting the roof to lock tightly! I must have spent an hour building and rebuilding my latest roof, frustrating to say the least!

A Guide to building a Medieval Village
MikeyB replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I might be wrong on this but I'm having the same issue regarding the brown hoses. I haven't tried the 4mm pneumatic for two reason, one the 3mm fits pretty tight and would think the 4 mm would be too tight. Also the pneumatic hose might be too flexible to hold the weight even if the leave pieces fit on. I use the black ones in alot of my builds right now but have been thinking of getting a few tan ones to see how they work. I also thought about using a light gray or white hose with technic bush 1/2 smooth placed randomly up the "trunk" to give a brich tree effect Another method I have done with some of my the longer black ones is stack use some 1x1 brown cylinders up the hose. It beefs up the "trunk" and you dont have to lock them into place which will allow the trunk to bend a bit. good luck and hope to see some of you builds soon. -

I've been on a bit of a building spree lately! One free build (my take on a row house, if you can have a row house with only two houses) and two mini-guild builds (siege engine and prince of the forest builds) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to take photos of them yet but hope to get to them on Monday. Still hashing out ideas for the Embassy build. I was thinking of building in Kaliphlin. Has anyone else decided where they were going to build yet? -
Guilds of Historica Introduction/General Discussion Thread
MikeyB replied to I Scream Clone's topic in Guilds of Historica
It is still open, post your sig fig and army in the Mitgardia thread and build away! -
Nice farm, I love how you made the cabbages from forestmen caps and green heads. The hedge effect is nice too. I do get the following error message when I try to follow the brickshelf link though "There was an error with your input. Permissible characters are [A-Z][a-z][0-9][-][_][@][.][ ]. Please go back and try again "

welcome! are you in South Carolina? if so I'm in Charleston. Similar except I never stopped building! My intrest float between, town, castle and trains lately I have been on a fantasy build kick. the maersk train is great by the way. I'm trying to convince the wife that it and my Emerald Night would look great displayed in the living room somewhere!

I just realized I didn't post my armorer in this thread. So I present, Hemrick the Armorer! More photos and back story in THIS thread

thanks for the comments. My favorite part is the outdoors workshop as well. Looking at the photos though you loose some of the details, I might shoot another shot without the roof on so you can see the workbenchs, anvils, tools, etc I did borrow the chimney idea for siren-of titans Drake Inn chimney. Initally I had a stack of 1x1 rounds but it wasn't very stable and when I saw his, I thought it was a great solution! @ZCerberus, actually these are my first MOC. I posted it elsewhere but I have been a lego fanatic for years, the first set I remember getting was the yellow castle and really haven't had a dark ages, just some grey period. I have lurked for a long time here for years but it was the guild project (and Maydayartist's project and Defrel Cadarn's great tutorial!)that inspired me to start building MOC. Now I have list of ideas that keeps growing!

thanks for the comments. When I say first attempt, I mean I played around with the design a bit before coming up iwth this but overall I am pretty happy. @de Gothia, borrow away! If you need a more photos let me know. As to my photos, I was a photojournalist for many years but often I rush these type of shots (studio style)and Im not 100% happy with my lighting setup and backdrop but it is coming back to me! @gabe, I debated on the size of the stag. I too thought it might be a bit small. But deer breeds come in different sizes. This particular breed is known of it's delicate meat and is common in the land of Circardia ;) I thought about making it a stud longer and a plate higher but it seemed too big (More the size of the horse). As it is, it's nearly as tall as the mini fig without the antlers. I may make attempt moose or elk in future builds. As to the head, the hood prevented me from turning it any more! But I agree I wish I could have turned it more to the side without leaving a big gap on the neck of the Roltic

I was going to put an interior but it wasn't working out. I just didn't think a few things through. for example, I wanted to tile the floor with 2x2s tiles but i forgot to raise the wall one plate so the door would still open. I am thinking of creating a vignette to show the shop but I have another build I want to work on now (Lord Arlindus Feast) The interior is vital to that build so hopefully some of the lessons I learned on this build I can use for that MOC.
