Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Sammael replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I would expect a 64-wide 2-corner set, with some tribute to Cafe Corner and Market Street. Perhaps a Hospital (finally) with a cafe and fresh fruit market? In this style? -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Sammael replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Right, and agreed. If Jamie was involved than the only thing left is that they did not iterate enough due to lack of time. As for comparing to Rebrickable, many of those MOCs are fantastic but some of them are far, far from a pleasant building experience. They are also often quite fragile. Official modulars were always next level... and Ninjago City series is one level above that when it comes to build experience. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Sammael replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I finished building the set today (purchased it on the 2nd). Overall, it was probably the worst modular build experience I've had a in a while. Some of the previous modulars were boring (Town Hall) or repetitive (Emporium), this one was just bad. Lots and lots of fiddly bits, tiny pieces to justify the piece count, and honestly questionable techniques at times. I own a few Rebrickable MOCs and this is how Shopping Street felt like. It needed several more refinement passes. Design-wise, the alley between the 2 buildings is too narrow and doesn't add much visual appeal. It would have been nice if they made it a cobbled street that could then be further extended but no, it's there just for the leak/plumber "story" which I found completely unappealing. The rat's nest and the carrier pigeon loft are far more interesting story points. Overall look is better than in pictures but feels too much like a mutant of some of the previous modulars. There is some questionable architecture and the ridiculuous toilet placing. Too much was sacrificed to achieve the angles - build experience, size, and playability. I see above the designer is the same as for 10362 French Café. I found that set's realization atrocious (I did not buy it but watched numerous reviews - 0 appeal). This one is better, but please, TLG, assign someone more senior to mentor the designer a bit more on the topics I mentioned. It's obvious the designer is very talented, but needs more guidance. -
Unless something changed, recallibrating an official molding machine to use different colors is not a task that can be easily accomplished multiple times per day. Also, some of those colors are not colors that would be officially produced. For example, a few years back at the Fan Weekend, one of the designers stated that a translucent torso and translucent arms are a no-go since they have to be different types of plastic so the arms can be popped off without breakage. My guess is that these are simple knock-offs.

Mature Themes We'd Like to See (discussion, rumour, wishful thinking)
Sammael replied to legoSDR's topic in LEGO Licensed
Warcraft and Diablo licenses from Blizzard would work great to replace Fantasy Era Castle, while Starcraft would be an awesome alternative to Star Wars junk. All three games feature demons or demon-like creatures, sacrifice, blood and gore galore, so they would seem to be against TLG's brand image, but TLG doesn't give a rat's megablocks about its brand image anymore anyhow. EDIT: oh wow, the common word for human posterior is censored on Eurobricks? How very... American. -
Marvel Superheroes 2019 - Rumours, Speculation & Discussion
Sammael replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in LEGO Licensed
I read the last 2 pages and saw nothing, didn't think Brickset was that behind the news. I guess it's the price of having to clear every news item with TLG to check if it's a leak or not... -

Nobody has mentioned the 4 Spider-Man sets with pics shown on Brickset? I hate the vehicles, but some of the figs look appealing. Will need to see that Sandman in more detail... https://brickset.com/sets/76134-1/Spider-Man-Doc-Ock-Diamond-Heist https://brickset.com/sets/76133-1/Spider-Man-Car-Chase https://brickset.com/sets/76114-1/Spider-Man-s-Spider-Crawler https://brickset.com/sets/76113-1/Spider-Man-Bike-Rescue -

Stretchers of that style are still in use around here, I saw EMTs using one not three days ago. -
I can't stand that animation style and the Dimensions Teen Titans minifigs were horrible.

Thank you for the insights! This set looks great, can't wait to see more of the theme. And I am saying this even though I am not a huge HP fan and don't own a lot of older HP sets (2010 castle and a handful of others).

Not directly related, but I just realized that the new CMF18 Cat costume + this Catwoman head + this hair gives us a decent Marvel Black Cat stand-in:

Damn. Will have to get them all, including at least one more Sanctum without figs in order to make a larger building (or two).

There are many diners incorporated into multistory buildings. I am currently leaning towards buying 2, I'm just not sure if I want to make the ground floor symmetric or just have one huge diner window with a door to one side. I'd also like to see how it looks with white instead of tan for the upper floors...

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Sammael replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Every single kid I know GREATLY enjoys switching minifig parts, faces included. You are describing one possible play pattern which is supposedly more valid than the other, I posit that the "snapshots" play pattern is far more prevalent than you are willing to admit, especially with the older audience (which modulars are explicitly aimed at, they are 16+). Also, why don't you answer my premise that smiley faces are incredibly inappropriate as the "neutral" expression? Could it be that they are not, in fact, neutral? -

Yeah, because it was so easy to project whatever we wanted to the smiling faces of Lion Knights and Black Falcons while they were disemboweling themselves. Or the smiling face of a Dragon Knight who ran into a ghost. Or the smiling face of a Futuron monorail operator being held at gunpoint by Blacktron raiders. Even if LEGO City is supposed to be a Roddenberry-style utopia (and it's not, it's a police state run by the Octan corporation), smiley faces look ridiculous in many other themes. Now, if the default face had a neutral expression instead of a smile, your argument would have merit. This way, it's purely nostalgia speaking. -

Market Street did not have classic faces. -
I think it would look best with mirrored DO to the left and PC to the right. I plan on making a 32x32 with a very narrow (<16 wide) building on the left side and a parking lot on the right side to place next to the diner. Perhaps a record store or something similar.

One thing that bugs me is that I'm not seeing new parts or building techniques - things that were immediately visible when Assembly Square was revealed.
