12V motor
clarkdef replied to Good old Lego builder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The thing I found with gearing down very fast motors is a lot of drive train bounce and a good percentage of power gets absorbed by cogs and axles. I had this motor when I was young, the battery packs were quite long from memory, at the time I had no idea what it was for lol... brothers collection. -
I have this set. I really don't like it, because it does not function well. At full extension it can barely lift itself and the buggy motor is very loud and rough sounding, also the clutches slip to easily making it weak at lifting from any position. Shes all looks.

Over volting RC unit?
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Update on my plans, just want to run it past you guys. My updated plan is to run two buggy units of one battery. Here's the battery I have chosen http://www.trademe.co.nz/toys-models/radio-control/parts-accessories/batteries/auction-569657843.htm My knowledge is that a buggy motor draws about 3.5amps of current so four of them will drain 14amps. I calculate this battery of being able to exert 20amps, it is also very light at 110g. I will keep the battery external and wire it upto the units, the covers can stay off the units so no modding of the units will be needed, which I feel better about knowing that they are rare. Well there's my tentative plan as it stands. Here's my little car as it is. -
not enough rally :(

Probably sales being too low, they might of been very expensive for what they were. Who knows. -

My new RC car is pretty good, definatly could compete and it's wicked fun! More fun than a bought RC car. I think we should all petition Lego to bring out the older type RC models again. -
Over volting RC unit?
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks yes it will be interesting to see what sort of grunt can be obtained. I also like the LED idea, i'm always draining my batteries by leaving the unit on. I will take your fears into account. I will think about it. -
Moc 8858 studless remake
clarkdef replied to piterx's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I actually have the old one currently built, it's sitting on my ps3. I used to always try to motorise it, by sticking that old super high rpm torqueless crud motor they had back in the day in it. haha that thing couldn't move itself. Anyway pretty awesome, and functional, be very hard for you to beat the look. It's a serious classic IMO the best. -
Over volting RC unit?
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very good idea, I did use 9volts on a previous test car. Compared to the rechargables they were faster, so yes I know it will go faster BUT I don't wana damage the circuits in the unit if I can help it, so if wise I could just add two more batteries instead of 3. Haha don't worry I am good with custom work, it will look like a bought one! -
Hey guys, I have been slowly building my hill climb RC car and I have pretty much built a simple car, just to see how all the parts perform. I am using the RC buggy unit and two buggy motors powered by 7.2v of rechargable batteries. So far I am direct driving two smallish wheels off the slow outputs of the motors, even though I am using the slow outputs the car lacks torque uphill, speed on the flat is about right though. I want to gear it down for uphill but then I will lose speed. So I was thinking of adding 3 more batteries taking the volts to 10.8v to get a bit more rpm. I was going to drill holes into the RC unit and thread wires through it, series wiring the 3 external batteries to the 6 internal. Is this wise? Is there a better way?

Steering problem?
clarkdef posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ok I have been racking my brain trying to think of a way of how to get a good amount of steering travel through the buggy servo unit. It is ovious that the gear rack system doesn't work. Gearing up doesn't work because of two reasons, more gear play to soak up rotaion and mmore torque needed to turn it which this unit doesn't have. I didn't want to come here and ask because I like to figure things out myself, but yeah... Thankyou in advance -
RC servo broken?
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It seems to count 3 positions from center. I think the first two would be pretty hopeless, the lego gears would need that just to workout the slack. I learnt what the paddles do lol they control the grey output, so could use that as steering output with another motor :). I built a little car and it's pretty fast must do 20kph! -
I just got my RC unit that belongs to one of the RC racer cars, this unit has a servo but it seems to only turn 45 degrees left and right, this isn't enough to really point my wheels hard enough for steering, either it's broken or the RC racer cars don't steer very well? If that is the way it is susposed to be then it will not do, I noticed that the box has a grey output I tried hooking another motor upto it, but nothing? My guess is this is also for other steering options but this must actually be broken as nothing spins on it. Also the transmitter has two paddels on the rear what are the point of those?

Mods on the 9398 4x4 crawler
clarkdef replied to d1ging's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What the crawler needs is a xl motors per wheel to eliminate the diffs. Unimog tires or power puller tires would be nice too. The 4x xl motors might be a bit impossible though, maybe large motors... Could anyone do this? -
9398x8
clarkdef replied to midengineaddict's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I want something slightly bigger than the crawler tyres, the crawlers tyres are 300mm all the way around and they don't quite look big enough on my car, also they overhang off the rim too much and are scraping the steering arm. Though crawler tyres are very light for their size which is a bonus, these tyres look like they would be fairly heavy being real rubber. -

Those are some awesome tyres, I have a question what is there circumfrance and do they over hang the wheels more than the original tryes? -

Bad A** Trike!
clarkdef replied to z3_2drive's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not sure, I don't seem to have too much of a problem when I turn the chain inside out, seems to make it stronger, but I only have one buggy motor -

What if you double them up, one on each side? -

Would definatly haul big time. I like the custom battery how did you go about hooking it up? -
If only legos crawler worked this well. Amazing vehicle it ticks all the boxes, I could become attached to this model if I had built it, and even come to love it never willingly to take apart, it would remain forever in my heart... But hell yeah awesome model, and I subscribed too.

Sariel is a master creator, and if you were to listen to anyone it should be him. However to make different funiture you should sometimes go against the grain. I really like the idea of bikes, but was never able to build them to work as powered vehicles cause they just fall over. Oh btw didn't know that the RC receiver had a build in servo, kinda made my day :D
