Monster Race Buggy
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not sure if I understand what you mean? The rear ones are turned around so they fit on the crawler hubs, and they don't have the big tyres on, that's because of the high weight, but other than that not sure I know what you mean??? -
Little Race Car (Copy)

The colours are great! They give the car a freshness that appeals to me, I plan to make my evolved buggy a similar scheme of colour. -
Yes you look like you may be limited by parts, I would say that the line beneath the window should be white and if you can a very solid white, defining a nice strip of white below the red, front to back. If it were all red, the eye would struggle to focus on any givin part of the vehicle, the eye will instead focus on the whole if it were all red.

Monster Race Buggy

Yes that is a good idea, I need more of those 3 pin wheels. No, but I will, I will film it too . I don't think it's fast enough to make a great jump though -

No,no, I ripped it off from an F1 design I ain't smart enough to come up with something like that I need to do it with PF or one of us does, not everyone can own those units. Maybe they will bring out a high range control system next year! Thanks, Buggy motors 5292 I think. None! How awesome is that, the only thing to come off the car was the cage! -
[You can skip all the boring pictures and writing, at the bottom is a video explaining the gist of the car] Hello all I have made another R/C Vehicle. This Ride was inspired from GTA San Andreas's Big Foot Truck, I was going to build the monster truck, but I came to the conclusion that my parts were to limited to get the job done, so I thought it would be cool to make a buggy and imagine it in GTA The buggy has two modes, race and monster, so I built it with both functions in mind and it works well as both. Let's start with the chassis. It features full suspension that is very tough and is capable, I have put it trough some good hell and nothing has ever separated. The front sub frame is one an angle held on by rubber mounts, the angle means the buggy can SMASH over any obstacle!!! There is also a flexible skid bumper which also aids to the smashing over of obstacles. Here is the underside of the front, you can see the skid bumper run under and connect to the unit, a rubber band corrects steering bias The rear suspension features a anti roll mechanism and a wheelie bar to prevent flips (It does need it) The Lipo battery and unit. The unit is good chassis brace, if you were to build full fleshed out models it would be good to have at your center. The battery weighs 40g and produces 8.2v at max charge the high drain capabilities means there is no voltage sage either. IMO Lipo is the only way to go. Here's the Racing Buggy with it's gray bumper minus wheelie bar. Swap out some parts to create the Monster Buggy! The Monster Buggy is awesome and feels very capable, it's my fleshed out function wise compared to the old Lego R/C racers, featuring more custom type suspension, superior bumpers and bad a$$ performance that is able to honestly scale things rock crawlers would be envious of The goal was to create a big, ugly, bouncy, fun vehicle... I achieved this goal! Here is that video, watch it fast it has a licensed song which I think may get it cut from youtube Sorry about the typos I am in a rush to go movies!

[MOC] Rage Buggy
clarkdef replied to JM1971's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's true if it were a combustion engine, but it isn't. Most electric cars have 1 gear and it goes all the way baby! They do this because unlike combustion the electric motor makes max torque at 0 rpm. The combustion engine starting in 5th gear, doesn't stress anything, it will just stall unless you ride the clutch which of coarse i never do... Any way point noted, I actually don't have experience with the xl motor only the large motor, so ya I can't argue. So yes I will take your word for it -

No you are referring to gearing down, gearing up will multiply the rpm and divide the torque. -

Will this move very fast though? Don't XLs need gearing up heaps, gearing it up may save those joints too! -

It won't because Lego is tough it will just bend or separate, but still you don't want any disharmony now do you -

Those tyres look like the real deal I like the sway bar, just like the real thing! I want some of those red u joints now... But my partner has forbidden me getting anymore Lego and ya I agree with her. Anyway what is the weight of those tyres compared with Lego 94.8x44R's?- 63 replies

[MOC] Rage Buggy
clarkdef replied to JM1971's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Exactly! Those steering components are from http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=8466-1 You have to use those particular control arms to get any movement, but I was more referring to the angle of the subframe. It will give you increased castor . If you are building a hardcore super fast buggy! Castor is very important, the geometry will allow... 1. Natural return to center (while rolling this will be enhanced) 2. Camber change while steering and flattening out when returned to center 3. More efficient bump absorption The benefit sometimes makes me weep uncontrollably -

This looks very nice, simple designs are always the best! Always good to combine the two control arms together so they don't separate, also a center axle holder coming off the combiners is good to reduce axle flutter or tramping. A Buggy should also have it's front sub frame titled back so it makes contact with on coming bumps well. Here is a work in progress buggy I am doing front end -

Yes it is very soft, I never use em because of that reason. I think a great hub is the small yellow and black one, it's great not sure how you put drive through it though...- 63 replies

Montana
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Haha trust me I improved! But didnt rec because my phone had wet gunk all over it, I feared for it's life and took it off... I have upgraded the front, with suspension will show pics soon :D thanks for the replies! -
Montana
clarkdef replied to clarkdef's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Update: I took Montana out for a training session today, just to see how he handles going up a hill. It went..... ok it was very wet and Montana was struggling with traction and the road was covered in little nuts when if hit would send Montana off the road! I managed to get a video in of a half run, it looks very bad but the few after that without the camera on him were better. He had some epic crashes this day and stood up to it like a boss , room for improvement though, like the steering, I need it to return exactly to center, it currently returns to almost center because of compliance in the plastic. I to will have to work on my ability to control while running after, as he is fast even with small wheels and a low gear ratio. Those nuts are annoying, he doesn't have suspension... -

clarkdef replied to d1ging's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The buggy motor can be geared down, if geared down to the same rpm as the xl, it should have more torque, not sure as I don't have a xl motor to test against. But as long as friction didn't kill the gains, the math says so. -

clarkdef replied to d1ging's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Buggy motors in the crawler will turn it into a monster truck :), will lose it's torque but ahh who cares, high torque feels too robotic. Flat surface fun is where it's at! Especially two of em racing. -
Larger Pneumatics
clarkdef replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah in function is the correct word? As in the functioning of the device seems alike. Where as the pneumatics are a representation of the real thing, even though they do function more like hydraulics than the actuators. It could be taken either way. Ok what I am trying to say then is the final package controls/functions more like the real thing... -
Larger Pneumatics
clarkdef replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ok don't shoot me, but I think actuators are more realistic in function. I Have used hiabs and forklifts at my previous roles and you can control them very precisely, the lego pumps fly out all the way! There's no control. -

No, no, it is the colour that YOU the creator intends it to be. Otherwise you are not really creating it are you. I like it mate, good work here. -
Which Battery Pack ?
clarkdef replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The 9v battery cannot supply enough amps, it's overall wattage is low even though you may think it the same as 6 AAs. The costs start to add up when you use those older battery boxes because you will need a few pf extension cables. the rechargeable pf box should be avoided because of the extorted prices should not be supported. -
