I thought the 'desolation of smaug' referred to the barren desolate area in front of Erebor including the ruins of Dale...could be wrong though. *SPOILERS* As for Smaug's demise.....jury is still out as to when this will occur (DOS or TABA). If the Dol Guldor 'battle' is resolved in DOS then I think Smaug's attack on Laketown could be saved until TABA. The argument I have heard is that it may be difficult to avoid DOS feeling like the end of the story if Smaug dies. Either way I still think we will get Lego Smaug this year.

Even Peter Jackson wouldn't deviate that far from the book....though with the combined creativity of Jackson and Lego I guess anything is possible. Perhaps Smaug will cruise down the Celduin on a flick-fire armed powerboat.

Didn't mean to imply that a Dol Guldor set would be dull....on the contrary it could be awesome. We just don't really know at this stage exactly how the Dol Guldor 'battle' is going to play out and so its difficult to know what to expect from the lego set. I just think that the set list announced seems to have some strange omissions and not much in the way of focus on the dwarves/Bilbo. If we had Beorn's house and confirmation of Smaug it would appear much more comprehensive/balanced wrt coverage of the (likely) events of the movie.

Smaug being in wave 3 could be seen as a fairly significant spoiler wrt the ending of DOS....... But then again, given Lego's recent track record for accuracy when it comes to movie events (e.g. iron man 3), you can't read too much into their depiction of events.

"79011 Dol Guldur Ambush £19.99 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army £29.99 79013 Lake Town Chase £49.99 79014 Dol Guldur Battle £69.99" At first glance its not the most inspiring of lists tbh....if it is indeed accurate. In particular it would appear to be remarkably thin wrt the main story of Bilbo's journey/adventure. Why would we need a Mirkwood elf 'army' for DOS? Based on the trailer they are only dealing with a small band of Azog's orcs...not a large scale battle......unless of course the Mirkwood elves are involved in the Dol Guldor battle and the 'Mirkwood elf army' is an 'add-on' to the 'Dol Guldor Battle' similar to the Uruk hai army set. As others have mentioned the apparent lack of Beorn in this wave would be very disappointing (unless he turns out to be part of the 'Dol Guldor battle 'in Jacksons version of events...and kills Bolg at Dol Guldor rather than BOFA?). More importantly, the omission of Smaug seems very suspicious. I simply cannot believe that Lego would fail to make Smaug for DOS. We have seen Smaug in the trailer, Peter Jackson confirmed that the dwarves have some sort of battle/encounter with Smaug at Erebor, Lego dragon have sold well in the past and he would add some much needed diversity to the line....it seems a complete 'no-brainer'. But why then would a seemingly leaked list be incomplete? The set list would however appear suitable for the purposes of delivering a wide range of minifigures.....Thranduil, Azog, Radagast, Nazgul/witch king, Thrain, Galadriel, Bolg, Bard, Master of laketown could all be readily accomodated. So at least in that respect in would be a good line-up.

I agree with all of this....I'd be really surprised if we didn't get Beorn in the upcoming wave. Lego don't exactly adhere to 'correct' scale in a many of these things (e.g. the new eagle) and so a repainted city bear would probably 'work' as Beorn in the context of Lego. Equally, they haven't been shy about developing new molds for LOTR/Hobbit so far (cave troll, goblin king, warg, eagle....) so an entirely new mold for Beorn doesn't seem that unlikely either....especially as I can't think of any other new molds that are definitely required for DOS.....assuming, of course, that Smaug is brick-built.

Based on the recent turn of 'events'.....do we actually have any reliable information that the (inevitable) Azog minifigure in the upcoming DOS will definitely not be 'Tan' ? Apologies for dragging conversation back to Azog again.....

How long does it take to eat dinner.....? With regards the size of Beorn's bear form...it could depend on how angry he is. In the description of The Battle of Five Armies it says "...and he seemed to have grown almost to giant-size in wrath. " The Lego city bear would have to be a mildly displeased Beorn as opposed to the absolutely furious Beorn trying to break through the door in the trailer....

Sorry guys - i'll make sure to tag any potential **spoilers** in future. That said i don't think the movie has really been spoiled so far.....just speculation on a few minor plot points based on the trailer. The Lego sets may be bigger spoilers when they are revealed.

Thats exactly correct - but clearly Jackson has changed things significantly. The original AUJ teaser appeared to show Gandalf fighting someone in Dol Guldor but the scene was absent from the movie....then the DOS trailer clearly shows what appears to be Thrain dropping down on top of a glamdring-wielding Gandalf....presumably part of the same scene. Because Gandalf appears to have Glamdring this doesn't seem to be a flashback. Add in Gandalf's surprise that Dol Guldor isn't deserted when talking to Radagast and it seems likely that Gandalf gets the key from Thrain somewhere else in Jackson's version of events, possibly shortly after Azanulbizar. Gandalf then appears to meet Thrain again when exploring Dol Guldor in DOS...though its not clear yet how this will fit into the overall Dol Guldor plot. Some great possibilities for minifigures though.....perhaps Gandalf, Thrain, Bolg and even Radagast in a Dol Guldor set (with jumping Thrain action feature.....and flick-fires obviously.)

The DOS trailer seems to show Thrain jumping down (from a ridiculous height) onto Gandalf...and Gandalf appears to have Glamdring at this point so this certainly didn't happen at the time when Gandalf took possession of the key. I'm guessing that in the movie version of events Gandalf gets the key from Thrain 'somewhere else'....he did afterall think Dol Guldor was deserted when talking to Radagast. I have no idea however what Jackson's plans are for the 'Thrain in Dol Guldor' subplot- though i suspect it will be 'something' that helps to tie the Dol Guldor and 'quest for Erebor' plotlines together......and introduce Bolg (hopefully.....)

I always thought that 'Desolation of Smaug' referred to the desolate (unpopulated) area around Erebor (Dale etc)....and I think that the jury is still very much out with regards to the timing of Smaugs death (based on fan speculation at theonering.net). I do however, entirely agree with you that it seems the obvious way to conclude DOS...and I certainly can't think of another completely satisfactory ending. But equally I'm not sure how they would avoid Smaug's death seeming like the end of the whole adventure? How will they entice the general audience back for TABA? .....Aso based on abundance of other 'stuff' in the trailer I'd be concerned that Smaug isn't going to get much screentime if he dies in DOS. Of course all this assumes that Peter Jackson sticks closely to the events in the book....based on recent comments about how 'he was enjoying deviating for the book' and his penchant for altering timelines he may find more 'creative' ways of dealing with smaug's demise. Perhaps the Lego sets will give interesting clues? Apologies for straying way off topic....

As much as I would love to see 8 DOS sets....I suspect it is rather unlikely. What we will get largely depends upon how quickly Lego has been able to react to the switch to 3 films. I think it is relatively safe to say that because we already have the 'Barrels' set already that there wouldn't (originally) have been any plans in place for Beorn's house or Thranduil's halls (since these locations would have been in AUJ). However, since some of the sets/ideas originally planned for film2 will now appear in film3, I suspect there may be some 'back-filling' required to flesh out the DOS line - which might bring these previously overlooked locations back into play. With regards the 'flagship' set - I would be very surprised if that wasn't either a Smaug/Bilbo/Erebor set-up or a Smaug/Bard/Laketown set-up. Smaug's was always going to be a major component of Film2 (back in the original 2 movie plan) and so Lego would definitely have some sort of plan.......presumably with laketown because of the 'action' that takes place there. The only question really is whether the laketown attack is now in DOS or TABA. If it is in TABA then presumably Smaug/Erebor is the most likely big set.... As for Dol-Guldor, again it seems likely that Lego had some plans in place for this already and it is clear that this location does feature in DOS. i suspect however that any plans that were in place probably originally centred around the White Council/Sauron showdown.....which I suspect may also now be part of TABA.

Eh? WTF exactly is your point here in relation to my post?? I was merely highlighting that Alcarin's suggestion of how long it should take to build Helm's deep (and by inference, Orthanc) is entirely unrealistic. I didn't start the discussion around build time...

Hmmm...that trailer looked so 'cartoony' if they had replaced Orlando Bloom with the Lego minifigure it wouldn't have looked out of place. Apologies for straying off-topic.

Looks great. Best weathertop MOC I've seen. I'm particularly interested because I'm about 75% of the way through building my own weathertop MOC and was curious to see how you had tackled the various problems. You've really nailed the 'ruined' look.
