  1. "That's me", Felix mumbled to none in particular as he heard his name mentioned. He was aching to get started. "A proper investigation once more. Let's see if you still got it in you, old timer" A slight drum roll on the bartop marked his exit from the Hall as he strolled casually to the Bazaar to do a last-minute stock-up.
  2. I figured as much that it was more of a "what's cool/what might work"-process right now, instead of something already balanced. Some classes gave me the impression of "hmmm, this feels similar to something else already. Is this really needed?" I have no idea how much classes D&D has. Is there a fixed number? Perhaps we should settle on a fixed number too and mix some of the classes you already have right now or remove some of the similar ones. To me, as an RPG "noob", I'd like to be able to more easily view what's available and what type a certain class is, than having to scroll through 20+ classes and having a hard time comparing them. That being said, I obviously do appreciate all of the effort that went into this so far and in no way is it my intention to disrespect your work. Just giving my 2 cents. To make it more workable, I believe we have to funnel these classes into a smaller amount. On the other hand though, maybe that's just me and other like this amount of choices?
  3. Haha, whoops! That's a typo on my end . I'll fix it! It obviously makes no sense indeed to have a skill start at 0.
  4. I tried walking the entirety of the Belgian coast on Friday, so I needed the weekend to recuperate and found some time to do a bit of computer work. Seeing as I (and perhaps some other newcomers) struggled with the Attributes and Points system at first, I figured I'd try my hand at a visualization. While the system itself is not that hard in the end (still harder than 1.0 though), I think it might be the constraints of a text-based explanation that confuses people? I know I have difficulty with long texts and understand stuff more easily in a visual explanation. Here's my first jab at it. It's not in full Heroica:GATS visual style yet, because obviously spending time on that would be a waste of time if the base isn't right yet or if nobody thinks this might be a good addition to help character creation. Click for the large version, this one's only a preview for the forum. I color-coded the different aspects of a character's stats: Yellow: base Attributes Red: base modifier Attributes Blue: "Perks", the stuff a character learns and is governed by the overarching Attributes The list of Spells and Proficiencies + their explanations I'd put on a separate graphic, as not to clutter the main visual The typography was legible enough in Illustrator, but compression made the small white text in the black square nigh legible now. Especially on mobile, probably. I'll increase the font sizes for those.
  5. Wow! Great work on the maps! It's so cool to see the whole BoBS world come together. Very helpful indeed!
  6. Felix strolled through the Hall, content he had still been on time for the signups. Noticing another new face enter the premise, he walked up to Aysu. "That looks like a potent cocktail you're drinking there, miss", Felix said smiling, pointing at her pink drink.
  7. That's a lot of interesting classes. The list is rather long, though. Perhaps these could be split up between battlefield roles? E.g. a 'support' category with all classes that fall under this combat role, 'rogue/stealth', 'mage', ... It would making searching for a specific class a bit easier? How were the classes generated? Where you going for a certain number of classes or did they grow organically, based on the amount of proficiencies? I like the fluid system of being able to easily switch.
  8. Oh wow, that is very recent. This is very helpful in terms of background. If Chimerans have a lifespan similar to humans, that makes that the youngest ones are only 3rd (or 4th generation)? That's an interesting angle for the species.
  9. "I like your enthusiasm," Felix stated and downed his glass of milk. "I don't get it, because beaches are just heaps of sand I guess, but I like it." The Chimeran felt a bit out of touch when the topics of golf and polo were being discussed. Socialite sports as those were far removed from his daily life. "Can't say I ever played golf, nor polo. I never got the point of golf. Seems kind of dull to me. Then again, I never played so maybe I'm just missing out." "I was a good track runner though, back in the days of my basic training," he reminisced and tried to pitch in on the sports conversation. "Also, a decent boxer. Definitely not top-class, but I packed a mean hook. Haven't practiced either sport competitively in ages. I still run the occasional lap around the Ytri apartments and hit the odd bag every now and then, but that's just to keep a basic shape, y'know." Felix rapidly tapped the bartop with his fingers and pocketed the leftover pack of cigarettes. He pointed at the Quest Board. "I'd best check out what jobs are still open, if I want to turn a buck doing this Heroica thing. I'll catch y'all later!" The Chimeran got off his stool and walked towards the Quest Board. Carefully reading through each of the briefings, he uploaded his name for Mission 1 and 2. Discretely looking into things had been such a large part of Felix's life, they had become a second nature. Hell, he couldn't even put a number on the amount of deep-dives into Aetherspace he'd made back in the days. It was like the jobs were practically tailored to Felix's background and talents. The Aetherspace job brought back memories of the past. He had that job once and he was good at it, but damn if there weren't those other, even more crazily talented 'space-divers out there with him. Too bad they were all gone now. A faint nostalgic smile turned into a grimace as Felix remembered his late colleagues. Luckily the third mission made him chuckle once again. "I can barely keep my own apartment clean, let alone a hotel."
  10. "Rare beaches, eh. Can't say I've seen a lot of those", he said as he frowned and tried to recall what a proper beach looked like. "I only have very vague memories of the exoticness of Pixiu and the beaches there. My folks skedaddled when I was still a young'un. Ironically, lush jungles were simply replaced by concrete jungles, which is where I spent most of my life. Here and there, all over the place, see." Felix slurped some more milk and casually responded to Varen's question: "This here drink-see, nah, it ain't spiked. Pure unadulterated milk, ami. I left that other stuff behind a long time ago. I'm a cool cat now, see. I get my highs of the 'bop, feel me?" He grinned a mouthful of sharp teeth: "Sorry to disappoint you," and tapped the the pack of cigarettes laying on the bartop. "These are my slow death and only vice I have left. But I'm trying to quit that, too." Picking in on the lawyer's story of the burglary, Felix dryly stated: "Chimerans get a bad rep sometimes. No matter what we do, some will always see us as overgrown animals." He gritted his teeth.
  11. Thanks again for the extra help. I've re-read the rules several times and, together with your explanations, it makes more sense to me now . Since my only proper experience with a "real" written RPG is Heroica 1.0, I find it an interesting challenge to play a - and write for - a new character. Part of me wants to default to Eric's Chaotic Neutral, individualist and misantropic deep-gray morality in these philosophical matters, but I definitely also want something "new" and not to retread what I had in 1.0. By the end of Heroica 1.0 I fully had the character in my mind and fingers, so I guess there's a bit of muscle memory that is trying to push me into that "old" direction. It's a fascinating process. EDIT: Minor background question: did the trial regarding the Chimeran's sapience happen (long) before the Five Years War or during the War? I'm guessing (long) before, since they seceded fairly quickly afterwards.
  12. "I see. Fair enough point. After all, we all got to find a way to make a living here." "Heh", the Chimeran winked, "spoken like a true lawyer." He tilted his head and peered into the glass of milky that was starting to get empty. "I prefer to keep it one hundred with myself, see, but I won't say no to having a bit of fun." "So, this law firm of yours, was it on Ebria Station?" Felix chuckled and twirled one of his whiskers. "Phew, I did not expect this to turn into a semantic discussion so fast! Are you a lawyer, as well?" "I guess you have point, though," he said and raised his hands in a faux display of surrender, "ya caught me in my defense." He laughed and chugged down the last bit of his milk. "Bamboozle, boombazle, y'know. Honesty, integrity, yada yada, ..., I meant proper values in general. Like I said to Varen here: me, I like to keep it real with myself, but I guess we all have to make a living." Felix somewhat laughed away the statement, trying not to antagonize people too much on his first evening at Heroica's; it wouldn't be the first time, but he had learned from the past. Inside, though, he had some issues with that morality and it gnawed at his mind. After all, decent people wouldn't allow themselves to get corrupted in the first place, now would they? They'd fight tooth and nail to preserve their integrity. Or at least that was what he would do. Or what he did. Maybe it was just him, though and his values were getting outdated fast in a seemingly ever-increasing individualist universe. "Whatever happened to getting rid of all guns in the valley?", he thought while ordering another glass of milk. Felix was somewhat flabbergasted at the words of Valesia and drew a blank face. He processed the words, but his mind was still too pre-occupied with what Soren had said to make anything of it. He merely answered "uh-huh", and then reached out his paw again. "Mao. Felix Mao. And the pleasure is all mine, dawlin'."
  13. Felix smiled. "A lawyer! One of the good ones, I hope. I've certainly seen my share of corrupt ones. They give the whole profession a bad name." A hero. The very word made Felix feel very content about the choice he had made today. "Proper heroes are what is needed nowadays, if you ax me," the Chimeran shook his head and took another sip of his milk, "because most of the times all I ever see is corruption. It's like honesty has become a bad thing nowadays. I try and not let it get to me too much, but sometimes it's difficult to try and walk a just path." He blew out some smoke and waved it away again. Felix chuckled. "Hah, listen to me, getting all philosophical. Let's not dwell on the past too much. After all, we're here to build a brighter future, right?"
  14. Felix smacked his lips as he received the fresh glass of milk. "The drink of gods", he uttered and took several big gulps. As said, he proceeded to light one of his cigarettes and did his best to wave away most of the smoke. "So, do you have any other obligations here, other than tending the bar? Do you facilitate the contracts between Heroica and the clients, or how does that work out? I mean, someone has to keep watch over the jobs, I guess. To keep out the shady business and all that."
  15. I also raised Velocity, which brings the total of spent points to 9. I thought I had to 'pay' for Survival, instead of it being free because of the 2 Smarts. Thanks for making it clear. I think I'll just leave my 1 leftover point in the bank for now. Gameplay-wise it's probably not the smartest thing to do, but I like the build RP-wise right now. It's the direction I had in mind.
  16. "Yeaaah, I dunno 'bout that shuttle. Perhaps.", Felix answered as honestly as possible. After all, a shuttle might've actually landed, but he surely wasn't on it. He hadn't left Ebria Station in a long time. Casually waving his hands, he continued: "Me? Nah, I ain't really got no real ties to Pixiu. The old-timers skedaddled when I was still a small kitten, you see." He didn't really want to get into the whole issue too much and shifted the topic to his drink. "A glass of milk'd be purrfect, thankee", Felix said as he took out a pack of cigarettes. "Mind if I light one up?" He flashed a friendly smile at the bartender. "It won't smell, I promise. These are like cinnamon-infused or something. Heh, I'am actually trying to quit, see." "Thankee, pal", the Chimeran smiled. "Uh yeah, a real bender alright", Felix chuckled, trying to going along with the story. He'd rather not admit his small flat didn't have the room for a proper iron or that he'd been somewhat unemployed for a time now. His composure became more jovial again as he felt reinvigorated by all the good memories that the remark brought up. "Sometimes, you know, you just got to get out there and get rid of all the bad energy, you feel me? Just kicking it to the rhythm and jazzing out. I'm all about the good vibes." He assuredly extended his paw towards the stranger. "Felix Mao's the name".
  17. I figured there'd be a mistake there. Thanks for the help. Putting the stats together is a bit more puzzling than in Heroica 1.0 . I've never really played "real" pen-and-paper RPG's/DnD before, that's probably why I'm kind of struggling with it. I've changed the stats now. I upped the Smarts to 2 and lowered the Short Range proficiency to compensate. All together, I've spent 10 points correctly now (I think).
  18. I've entered my character into the registry. If someone could double-check if I did the stats correctly, that'd be grand. I think it's okay, but I'm not 100% sure.

  20. Felix strutted down the hallway to the funky tunes of his headphones, his gesticulating hands emphasizing the hi-hats resonating in his ears and his feet stepping to the rhythm of the drums. The fleet Chimeran was certainly enjoying himself - all by himself -, somewhat to the annoyance of several passerby's in his way. Eventually, he reached his destination: the doors of Heroica Hall. He stopped in his tracks right there, coincidentally right on queue with the end of the song. Taking off his headphones - the sound of the next song already playing slowly fading into silence - and closed his eyes. He visualized a wicked trumpet solo in tandem with a kickass piano piece to pump him up and prepared himself for what was to come: a fresh start. "Here... we... go", Felix faintly muttered to none in particular and pushed open the door to the ex-hotel. His eyes quickly scanned the room's lay-out and occupants, before he shook his head and the activity left his thoughts. The Chimeran chuckled. "Old habits die hard", he thought as he decisively made his way to the bar. Bars are always the best place for all kinds of information. As he crossed the Hall to the bar, Felix noticed several other Chimerans; the barkeep being one of them. His ursine counterparts were certainly more imposing than him. Felix wasn't overly tall, nor broad shouldered or thick-headed like many of his more lion- or tiger-eque brethren. In fact, he looked more like a common house cat of undetermined breed. A street straggler. A street straggling house cat of humanoid size, that is, whiskers and all. Despite wearing a shirt and tie, the man looked sort of disheveled. His clothing was a mess and the shirt and tie looked more sloppy than classy, hanging loosely around his neck. He looked kind of official of sorts, but then again, he also didn't. Felix took a seat at the bar and signaled the bartender. While waiting, he was rhythmically shuffling on his chair, his fingers tapping the bar. Felix Mao has joined Heroica.
  21. Great, thanks for the information! I didn't really catch that in the Rules topic, but I maybe I just read over the explanation. For the maps, you may send me a PM so we won't derail this thread. I also didn't see the examples in the FAQ/Rules topic, I must be going blind . Thanks for the explanation here!
  22. Thanks! No problem! If I can help with other stuff graphics-wise, feel free to reach out and I'll see if I can help. I'm not sure if this is the right place or if I need to post this in the Rules & FAQ thread, but I don't really understand the different weapon types. Perhaps I glanced over it, but what's the gaming difference between Kinetic, Energy and Elemental weapons? Does one do more damage vs a certain type of enemy or how does it work? Also, Energy weapons are probably lasers and the like, while Kinetic are the more "traditional" weapons and Elemental ones are the fantasy magic weapons; did I get that right?
  23. I've been checking up on the forum every now and then and was delighted to see Heroica: GATS to have launched! So cool! It all looks very neat and well-thought out. There's a lot of information and background to digest, but I love the worldbuilding so far. The idea of science fiction fantasy is still somewhat alien to me (no pun intended), but the style looks really interesting and unique. I'm itching to come up with a character and join in once more . I don't think I still have the time to invest like I used to, though. I hope that a lot of new blood finds its way here to give Heroica 2.0 a bright future like its predecessor!
  24. It's great to see it all come together! Nice job on the write-up. The story adds some life to the builds. Great job team and especially to you Ross, for setting it all up and doing most of the builds and work! The first build with the model is probably my favorite one. I love how you managed to capture the other builds in microscale.
  25. Nice build! I love the overall gothic architecture and the classic slide-away sarcophagus. The ossuary look great, with the skulls and stacked bones. Clever way of building it like that and an interesting part of the MOC.
