  1. I think the most cost effective way for you would be the following: Boom: 4 round end cylinders + 2 brackets Dipper: 2 round end cylinder + 2 brackets Bucket: 2 square end cylinders If my assumptions are correct, then you only need to buy two square ended cylinders to build it this way. Jennifer
  2. The four cylinders for the boom are joined together, so would it be possible to join them with only two of the brackets on the outside of the combined four cylinders? That way you would only need an extra two. Or you could always buy four studded cylinders for the boom, and have rounded ones for the rest :-) Jennifer
  3. Good point! If you already own them it would be ok though :-) Should be easy enough to compensate for this on the dipper and bucket cylinders by extending the mountpoints at the base of the cylinder with liftarms, e.g. 1x3. For the boom, the short length could actually be an advantage as the top of the cylinders would not have to be mounted "inside" the boom. Jennifer
  4. I used these to make joining two cylinders end to end easier. But after this the part that joins two rounded cylinders became available, so I imagine this would work well. The part I'm thinking of is the one that joins the two cylinders in the 8421 crane. Jennifer Wow indeed! It's something really special to see that model again :-) Jennifer
  5. Good luck Richie, I'm really looking forward to seeing your progress with this! I think it's quite poetic that many of the parts will be from the original :-) Jennifer
  6. Great work, I love the mechanics and look. Jennifer
  7. Seriously impressive. Congratulations on seeing the project through to the finish, it must have been tough. Jennifer
  8. I suspect the boom is located further forward than usual because the motor, gearbox, and driven axle going through the turntable had to go somewhere. In front of the turntable, and the linear actuators to lift the boom would not fit in. Above the turntable, the same. So they have to go behind the turntable. This means the boom will have to be either higher than normal, or further forward than normal. Further forward is the least worse solution. Jennifer
  9. Both of these are incredible in my opinion. The crane for function, the service truck for looks. Finances permitting, I think a trip to the shops will be in order :-) Jennifer
  10. Brilliant work! I would have liked all that chrome back in my day :-) Jennifer
  11. 42009, how could you say no? :-) There I was regretting not buying 8421, and this comes along! Jennifer
  12. I received the Lego 8860 for Christmas 1980. I think it was about GBP 25, but couldn't be 100% sure about that. Jennifer
  13. Thanks for the update me00rjb, it's a real buzz to hear that you are enjoying the build so far. Your use of the word "dense" is a good way to describe the workings I think. Sometimes I look at these models and think "how did I do this?", but at least we have the instructions for the record :-) Can't wait to see the photos of your work in progress! Jennifer
  14. Well spotted Alasdair, and Milan is correct for the reason why. I actually mention and explain this design decision in the instructions, fortunately it doesn't affect the range of motion too much. Even if I could have reduced the boom from four studs wide to three, which would have weakened it considerably, it still wouldn't make enough room to have the cylinders on the side and keep the model to scale. The Lego cylinders are just too wide; if they were scaled to the real JS220, they'd be about 1 stud wide. Offsetting the cylinders by a half stud wouldn't work either, as the top of the yellow part of the cylinder would foul on the boom. Jennifer
  15. Thanks for posting the link DLuders! It will be interesting to hear feedback from people using the instructions :-) Jennifer
  16. Interesting, I always built my own models with real bricks. I found using the software too slow and error prone - why put another layer between you and the bricks? I would build using odd colours if necessary, then buy bricks in the correct colours once the model was finished. Jennifer
  17. I'd love to see these developments! The original battery box was one, eventually two of the small 9V PP3 battery boxes placed behind the cab between the various greeblies. After a while I changed this to a custom battery box of the type you can buy in Maplin containing 8 rechargeable AA batteries for a total of 9.6V, in two rows of four. This was able to deliver much more current than the PP3, and with the slightly higer voltage drove the model faster and more powerfully. Jennifer
  18. I've not built my 8043 yet, so can't say for sure, but I'd estimate my excavator is a similar size. Jennifer
  19. Never say never! As Eric says, if enough people buy these ones, we may do more :-) Jennifer
  20. Where is the smiley for "jaw hitting floor"? That is incredible! I see Lego still don't have 1x7 thin liftarms in white, even after all these years :-) Jennifer
  21. Thanks Shushu! I'm afraid I don't have time or experience with the new pieces to do this at the moment, but it will be really interesting to see what others come up with :-) Jennifer I've no idea, what do you think yourself? Jennifer
