  1. More on 93. A lot's been said that doesn't need repeating, so I'll be brief. I liked the battles very much, and I liked how varied they were. Too much variation is never a bad thing as long as it doesn't bend or break the rules, IMO. I still stand by my opinion in that their difficulty was reasonable. No enemy, to my knowledge, was over level 45 or so, so any difficulty beyond that is clever QMing. I really enjoyed the depth of the characters and lore, and it's a big reason why I kept reading. With 73+ NPCs, there's no need to give them a full backstory and I agree with Zepher that simple traits were good enough for most. Others who followed the party were really well fleshed out, IMO, and actually I think some of that credit can go to the PCs. Karie caught my eye as the one who was always asking NPCs about their background, which probably helped Sandy a lot. I wish more players would display an interest in backstory like this because it motivates the QM tremendously (in my experience) and makes the world that much richer. It's certainly inspired me as a player to dive deeper into NPC interaction and lore. Syrio was the coolest NPC of the quest and had one of the largest backgrounds. I'd really like to see more of him as well, or maybe a quest to Ombracian coast (the Dastan map Brickdoctor made needs filling!). Sorcha, Drucilla, Aunt H, and Noel were also interesting. As far as PCs go, like I said Karie did an excellent job of keeping things lively with conversation. I absolutely loved Heckz. He's such a good character, and I liked his and Karie's dynamic as well. Erik was also fun to read, although a little more subtle, also brought out some backstory of the NPCs. I also wished that Sorrow, Thalion, and legobodgers (see, I can't even remember the character name) were more vocal. Eagerness to get out of the quest I can understand, though. There's one final point I'd like to make, and it's about the obvious comparison to Quest 50 (and even 15). 93, in my opinion, was an enormous improvement over 50. Variety, purpose, and freedom were all things that this quest had that 50 did not. 50 was repetitive, with zero (except Jun) NPCs to interact with (let alone 75), the battles were monotonous, and the quest very well could have been just as long if not longer if we hadn't quit while we were kind of ahead. 50 has had it's fair share of criticism since it ended so I won't beat a dead horse, but 93 was nothing near the impossibility of 50. And I actually enjoyed 15. I wouldn't rule out dungeon crawlers in Heroica at all. I have to agree. To add to this, I also thought the whole grandfather/daughter thing was really forced sometimes. Sorry guys, I do like both of your characters, but I really cringed whenever I read something like "hey gramps do you approve of me slutting around in this dress?"
  2. I'll have more to say about 93 as a spectator, but for now I just wanted to say that those in the quest complaining about the battle difficulty: I think you're complaining too much. I do agree that the addition of a passive special mid-battle "because it was too easy" was cheap, but other than that I thought they were fair battles. You can't expect every battle to be a breeze or have a good strategy available to that particular party - sometimes you just have to face the difficulty and muddle through. That's how it works sometimes, and I've definitely had my share of battles where I wasn't effective at all. Drucilla's special is nothing compared some others, and all of the mirror enemies were OHKO-able. And like Sandy said himself, the boss battle as a whole was kind of a pushover. It didn't seem very difficult at all.
  3. Results of Round 1 of Battle 8: Undead kill everything but Scarecrows (-36 ether) (yawn) >Docken vs. Scarecrow A - Hit (51 dmg, blind) Johon vs. Scarecrow C - Furious Hit (15+4+29=48 dmg) >Namyrra vs. Scarecrow B - Meditate (+1 ether) There is no way that the Scarecrows can damage the party so I'm just going to end it. 4. Upon receiving a fast response from Jun, Hybros heads to the Ji Pei palace to meet with the young diplomat and Vincent Legonardo. "Welcome, Hybros. It has been too long, and it is good to finally see you again. I believe you and Legonardo have already met." He indicates the man standing next to him. "Yes, very briefly at Jolly Roger's Grotto, if I recall correctly. I just hope your reputation proceeds you, little one. And a curious creature you are... Ahem." Hybros bows his head low to both. "Yes, so it has come to my attention that you've spoken with my associates, Doctors Raph and Don, along with Doctor Telsa of the Tritech. As it turns out, a similar project has arisen that will perhaps satisfy your request. An old friend of this family, Doctor Daneeka, requires a power source for a device that he is building. From what I understand it will complete the tasks that you were hoping to perform, so I suggest you seek out Daneeka and speak to him about it. Until then, I must get to work. Good luck." Hybros bows again, and looks Legonardo in the eye. "Thank you. I will speak to Daneeka immediately. I know him as well, and the man he works for, heheh..." Legonardo exits, but Jun lingers. "Hybros... You have come a long way since our quest in the Pagoda of Nine Elements. You have faced many trials, and have many more ahead of you. You have helped this family on many occasions, and I am proud to call you a friend of the Ji Pei. Now, there is one more thing I would like to impart to you before your next journey. I have a strong feeling that you will be needing it. Please follow me." Hybros has no choice but to oblige, and the pair walk into the next room, which appears to be a training room of sorts. In it resides a single form, who sits with his back to the door in a cross-legged position, appearing to be meditating. He rises at the sound of the door opening. "..." "Lee, this is the one I was telling you about. Hybros, this is Lee Long, a trusted friend and ally who has served my family faithfully for many years. He is strong in both spirit and fists, and has agreed to teach you the ancient fighting practice of the Aoi and many others." Hybros bows to Lee. "The art of the Chi Monk involves the harmony of the fighting spirit and the mind's connection to ether. A Chi Monk uses his fists in coordination with the power of the nine elements to fight enemies, but also protects his allies with the healing power of ether. It is a practice that borrows from many fighting styles and thus requires great concentration and training. I can impart this training on to you, but you must commit the utmost dedication." "But... I do not have one bit of magical ability. I never have, though... though I think my people have been able to... I am not sure..."Hybros looks to the ground. "I can not promise that I will be able to complete this training." "Many people who have never used magic in their lives or even known that they've been able to, have learned of their abilities later on. If your people were skilled in controlling ether, I believe you may be able to as well. There is only one way to find out, but you must be prepared to make sacrifices. Sometimes these skills do not come without a price..." "I have faith in you, Hybros. If you are as resilient as your were in that pagoda... I believe that you can succeed." Hybros hesitates, but eventually nods. "I will accept this training with gratitude. Come what may, hehehe..." He draws Zoot's Reaper. "Then let us begin. You will not be needing any weapons, however..." --- After several weeks of vigorous training under Lee's instruction, and the occasional audience of Jun, Hybros eventually learned to control magic both to harm and to heal, as his ancestors had many ages ago. The inherent powers of earth and wood were especially strong in the imp as they were the original arcane elemental strengths of the imps and their forest environment, but he found that he could also utilize the powers of other elements, thanks to Lee's training. The transformation was reflected by his new physical appearance, which also indicated that the training was not without incident. Bandages wrapped the imp's head and body, with only one eye visible. What exactly happened, however, was a mystery to all but those three. You have seen better days, it seems, but I hope the training was worth it. I wish you good luck on your quest to find your people. Do inform me of any new findings." "Thank you Jun, and thank you Lee. I am eternally grateful for your training and support. I can not truly repay such favors, but I will promise to not let you down, not this time. I will find my people, no matter the cost." With a parting bow, Hybros exits the palace, physically beaten, but spiritually awakened. It was time for rest and thinking at Heroica Hall before he set out on his next and possibly most important adventure.
  5. "Does saving an entire city count? Heheh..." Just then, Scheherazade left an envelope on the bar in front of Hybros. It bore the Ji Pei seal, so he quickly opened and read it. It was time. "Excuse me." He said to his companions. With a tip of hat he was gone, heading out the doors with his red cloak waving behind him. He pictured the destination in his head: the Ji Pei palace.
  6. Hybros contemplated his experiences, coming to the conclusion that no, he had no actually seen a human without clothes. Strange. Even stranger, she seemed to imply that humans had to take their clothes off to create an infant... he wasn't sure he wanted to know more, so he quickly changed the subject. "And how exactly do you plan on filling your days? All this talk of adventure, yet your questmates are not so... enthusiastic, eheh..." "Two more...? I thought one was bad enough..." Hyrbros could practically hear Mephistopheles shouting in his head, even if he wasn't holding the Kris. And he recalled the archdemon in its physical form devour Namyrra and that ranger, Harkenshire... "What were they like? The archdemons? There was something in the Temple of Zoot, three seals on the floor for three demons. I wonder if the other four may be in Eubric..."
  7. "Ghosts, the Crimson Crown, a machine that paints pictures and ghosts... it makes one wonder what else might be below this city, heheh." Hybros drew the Sword of Ancestral Hatred for Atramor to see, making a metal-on-metal scraping sound with the sheath. It's dark steel seemed tinted with the crimson of the blood it had absorbed. "It has seen much death since then, and I am not ashamed to say that both the sword and I have become accomplished killers together, hehehe... The Pheles Rod looks a lot different than when I last saw it. Have you managed to get the archdemon out?" Hybros grinned. "Strivvi.... were you not there once before? Which masons do you speak of? I have known an organization of brick masons in the Low Kingdoms..." "Hello Ellaria." Hybros noted her apparent cheeriness compared to Boomingham and Atramor. "You still owe me that explanation on human infants..." He might have been joking, but the intonation in his voice was hard to read.

  9. Hybros nods, understanding that whatever quest Atramor and Boomingham had just returned from had been... unpleasant for them. "A party... oh, yes, at the Guffington Manor." He recalls the Red and Blue Assassins, along with the strange time traveling wereraven and lethal Selkreeth to his companions. "There were also a few escort missions for the Ji Pei, one of which Lawrence here came along on... And a journey underground, to the sunken city of Nu Mercution. Possessed Moon Elves and ghosts from the past... the usual threats, hehehe."
  10. OOC: Uhh, oops. "I do what I can." Hybros shrugs and returns to his water and companions.
  11. Hybros looked around, assuming the hooded man was speaking to him. He hopped off his stool, which revealed his short stature. He looked up into the Rogue's eyes. "I am a hero of Heroica, you must be lost." He paused for a moment before a wicked grin spread across his face. "Heheheh... it was a joke. I am many things. A traveler, an assassin... some call me an imp. Others, a demon. Only one thing is certain... you are what you choose to be. And what is it that you choose, human?"

  13. Hybros reaches for his scythe upon the entrance of a floating eyeball, but several other heroes' familiarity with the creature, albeit negative, allowed the imp to relax. "Ah yes, it seems you have changed since then. The world, well..." Just then, Arthur's name was called for a quest, and the now-skirmisher rose to depart. Hybros sighed. "Such fleeting times to rest, heheh." He tipped his hat in farewell. A lumbering shape took a seat at the bar. "Boomingham!" And a familiar voice from the other end of the bar. Hybros had noticed scruffy-looking man when he entered, but could it be...? He looked at the white and blue dagger the man was holding. A different shape, but the Pheles Rod was unmistakable. "Atramor...?" He looked back and forth between the paladin and regulator. "I have not seen either of you for a long time. It has been much longer since we have traveled together, since that time at the Shadeaux warehouse, eheheh..."
  14. Only if it's Special Damage - Sentinel only protects against physical attacks, but that may or may not include physical elemental attacks. If the Knight is KO'd, Sentinel would no longer be in effect.
  15. Hybros soon returned to the Hall after a short walk from Zylstra, and delivered the letter to the Ji Pei Palace. Now all he could do was wait. He took his usual seat in the corner by the fire, leaned back into the chair and tipped his hat up to see if he could find anyone he recognized. There was Em, contemplating silently. Hybros thought it best to leave the man with his own thoughts. He also spotted Arthur, the somewhat untrustworthy man he had met briefly in the Hall some time ago. He got up to approach the bar and order a glass of water, nodding to the young wizard as he did so.
  16. OOC: I think there's also something wrong with the Pickax/Shovel situation - Pretzel should have two Shovels in addition to his Magic Shovel, and one Pickax. Hybros should have the other Pickax that he stole (yes with Pala's permission) and his own Shovel. I think. Hybros nods and sheathes the dagger, brushing against something sticking out of his robe as he did so. He pulled out a piece of parchment, unrolled it, and read Jun's letter again. He had almost forgot about it in the midst of the crisis, but now it was time to arrange a meeting. He borrowed a blank piece of parchment and a quill from the Baron's desk to write a response... Once he was finished, he rolled up the paper, returned the quill, and nodded once more to those still in the room. He headed outside, and took one last look of Zylstra. He breathed in the air - the musty, dank cave of a city was actually comforting to him. Perhaps one day he would call this place that he helped protect, home. For now, though, he departed through the sewers and out to the surface of Eubric, where harsh sunlight and more quests with Heroica awaited.

  18. This seems like a cool idea - I think I'm going to make my second character specialize in something or play a certain way, even if it handicaps him/her mechanically. Minmaxing is fun with Hybros, but I also think a more "purist" way of playing would be fun! In other news, very cool article on the Sheep Tribe, Kinto. I've got to read through the Library topic again - it really is a treasure trove of game lore and info.
  19. Quest #98: I really enjoyed this one, for the most part. The story has been one of my favorites of all time, mostly because it involved the Moon Elves (who need more development!), but also because it was extremely pertinent to Hybros' character and development. I enjoyed the characters - Soryx and Posco are both badass characters whose personalities were able to show through a little more in this quest than in 69. Melvin was also a welcome addition, and of course Wally's return was great. His character also has changed, and it will be interesting to see how the outcome of this quest affects him. As far as PC's go, Pretzel is one of my favorite Heroica characters, and his and Hybros' relationship was one of my favorite parts of the quest. They're very similar in many ways but fundamental and/or superficial differences make them adversaries. Their interactions also seemed dynamic, because while they agree completely on some things (Crimson Crown sux but we have no choice), their way of going about doing it is totally different. The Soul Link Chain offered an interesting medium to fuel their interactions, as well. Jeaux was cool, his cold and frank personality is fitting and sometimes amusing, in a good way. His development has been interesting to follow as well, especially the transition between not knowing and knowing that he is a robot. I wish that had been expanded on more in this quest with the Shades, but he was cool nonetheless. He kind of reminds me of the male AI in one of the Mass Effect games (will post a video if I can find it - EDIT: . ). Also this: "I need your robes, your handcannon, and your motorhorse." I wish Em had been a little more vocal. Yes I understand he is quiet in nature and that you, emjajoas, had run into RL preoccupations several times in the quest. I did enjoy his small character reveal and interaction with Hybros in the PM thread. Back to the quest itself, I'd like to talk about a few points. Battles and Balancing: I thought for the most part battles were well balanced, especially at the beginning. Yes, while Hybros can OHKO hordes of enemies, that doesn't mean that the battes weren't challenging. I felt that a good mix of the OHKO-able and weaker Imitation Gnomes and Moon Elf Corpses with the Shades was well-balanced. That being said, other aspects felt imbalanced. Some enemies were just too strong or immune to stuff so that the heroes seemed useless in battle. Jeaux especially. We never used the one-time use Starbeam weapons, but even so a battle should not be decided by NPCs at all, let alone ridiculously OP ones. I felt that the loot was fair. Pacing/Timing: I like what Flipz said about the difference between these. There were times where the timing (update speed) felt needlessly slow especially when we were just waiting for an NPC response. But mainly the issue lies with pacing. I think the quest could have taken about a month less and still had all the essential content with faster pacing. E.g. at the beginning when we really had no idea what we were supposed to do when searching Zylstra. I think it was a cool idea for exposition, and even added a very creepy vibe to the environment, but for the time it took to offer just a little introduction and then being told "oh yeah, there's that cavern that just opened, the Shades are probably coming from there"... it probably would have been more effective to just go down there in the first place. I'm not sure though, I still did enjoy that part of the quest but no so much the time that it added. Overall story and choices: I did feel that we had a lot of choices in this quest that directly affected the outcome of things. What to do with the Baron and Moke while we investigated, how to handle Posco, and who to side with in the climax were some of the most noticeable ones. for that. My only complaint is that the final choice was too one-sided. Maybe in a rare instance a hero would have sided with the Shades, and I really wanted to, but completing the mission was too important and the Shade's refusal to compromise sealed the deal. Even though the Crimson Crown were painted as the evil ones, we really didn't have much of a choice but to side with them in the end. The same issue was apparent in 82. The plus side in this quest, however, was that there were real consequences (Doc's death and Wally's grief, as well as the CC's image). My suggestion is to make the big choices more difficult next time. I'm sure that seems like a lot of criticism, but frankly there's just more that I can say about the flaws than what made the quest good. And again, I thought the quest was good overall, and really did enjoy it. Thanks for the quest Pie, and I hope to go on another one of yours soon!
  20. OOC: For record keeping's sake, each of the heroes should be updated with the loot division. Jeaux has the Professor's Kit, but I noticed the Scrap Metals, gold, consumables, and Topax are missing. There might be other things missing as well, each player should double check their stats. I'm glad to fix my own stats, but I wanted to point it out here in case of any confusion. And thanks for the quest, Pie! I'll have lots to say in the QM Lounge later. Hybros tips his hat to the baron. "It was an honor, eheh. If you require my services again, you know where to find me." He then looks on apologetically to Wally as he exits. Still feeling guilty about the whole situation, for both himself and his gnomish friend, Hybros looks down, still pondering the consequences. He turns to Soryx and Melvin. "You both fought well. Melvin, perhaps I will find myself at the harbor sometime soon, and I will look for your ship then. Soryx, I am glad I can now trust you. I look forward to when we fight alongside each other again. And about these Axes... perhaps if you were willing to trade for the other Starbeam Dagger, I would be willing to pass these on to you, heheh..." Finally, he bids farewell to his fellow heroes. "I can not say it was a pleasure fighting with all of you..." he shot a look Pretzel's way. "...But we completed our mission, and we got out alive. Until next time, hehe..." Hybros lingered in the Baron's quarters, awaiting Soryx's response. There was also one other matter that he had to attend to...
  21. Hybros crossed his arms and nodded. "The late Doctor here was experimenting with a device that somehow created the shade creatures that kidnapped your people. Needless to say, it got out of control and we had no choice but to eliminate the Shades, and U'Reeka who stood with them..." He winced, wishing he had lowered his voice in front of Wally.
  22. I might be a little rusty, but what the hell. 1. More than a dozen, games I've participated in may or may not be up to date on my profile. 2. I'll do my very best (at least once a day at the minimum). 3. 20,000 Leagues
  23. This. I've found both throwing weapons and melee weapons useful. I used to have more of the former, and would use them quite often (without retrieving them until the battle was over). It's just that now I have a melee weapon powerful enough to be more effective from the back row than any of my throwing weapons.
  24. Hybros nods, and heads out through the tunnel.
  25. Hybros shrugs. "Perhaps if we meet again you will have more gold, eheh." While Pretzel is digging, Hybros quickly peeks in the Monk's cart. He should have known better than to touch unknown items from the Paladin by now, but he felt that the monk deserved to have something stolen for putting those cursed chains on him for a second time. He snatches a pickax and stows it. He turns to Melvin, and holds out a sheet of written music, the Minuet of the Forest. "You fought bravely, Melvin, and were a big help to us, hehe... I have no use for this song, but perhaps you can learn it and sing for your crew mates aboard your ship or cousin in Zylstra. Maybe I will meet you in either place soon enough..." Finally, Hybros approaches Wally, putting on the Epaulettes just in case. "Come on, Wally. I understand you and the Doctor were... close, but he made his decision. I... I am sorry it had to turn out this way, but death is a part of life that... that we will have to accept." He gingerly pats the gnome on the shoulder, an awkward attempt to comfort his friend.
