  1. Another useful feature on Bricklink is the wanted list and email notifications to go along with it. For instance, I am currently bulking up on Trans-Dark Blue 1x2 Tiles. In my wanted list, I set that item as being wanted, then I entered that it should be in US only(to save postage!). Then I put in a minimum quantity of 50, and a price of $0.10. This can take a while, but if you are patient, you will get some good finds. Basically, whenever a store posts that item in that quantity and at that price, I get an email letting me know where it is at, and I can order them if I am so inclined. I have used this to bulk up on Light Bley parts, and it worked great.
  2. We should definitely have some Kaliphlin names for the dinos. I don't have any good ideas though, so the onus is on you!
  3. Gabe, have a great vacation! We'll try to hold the reputation that you have earned by winning each of the first 2 challenges. That is truly a mighty blow to Kaliphlin to miss out on your entry. I am also running way behind on my builds. I will definitely enter, but it will not be to the scale that I had originally hoped for.
  4. Wow, I spend a couple of days away not checking the forum and it blows up! When I saw how many new pages were here I was really hoping to see news that someone found the sets on the shelves somewhere already. Oh well...back to the lurking and waiting.
  5. Very cool build and story de Gothia! My only question to help unravel the mystery of the final battle is....How many of the adventurers returned from the quest? Great entry!
  6. We'd love to have some Avalonian guest lecturers! The Great University will be a place of learning where all are welcome from the Guilds....even the Drow. They could use some culture
  7. I belong to the Kaliphlin Guild! I am a member and an active builder. What I really like about GoH: I was seeing MOC's pop up on Flickr and MOCpages referring to Mitgardia and Avalonia, etc...I was not a member of EB at that time, and this is what drew me to join this site. I am glad I did, because there is a lot to offer all around this site, not just on GoH. As a newer AFOL, I had not heard of EB before this. In addition, the challenges have driven me to build in some ideas I hadn't thought of before, and the time limit of course forces me to work within time constraints. (That's a good thing!) The ability to see all of the different interpretations of the challenges and environments has expanded my technique immensely in the few months that I have been here. I think the Guild Leaders have done an amazing job in organizing all of this. Obviously in Kaliphlin, most of my interaction has been with SI. He has been available to offer critique and suggestions via PM's, etc. and that has helped me to flesh out some ideas and adjust style where needed. The sheer time constraints on those 4 must be huge, and for you all to take the time to coordinate, respond, and create ideas is very much appreciated. Suggestions: I really like the idea of the in-character Inn or Tavern thread. Also, some more mini-challenges that can go cross guilds sounds very promising. I agree with what I've read about more transparency to scoring. While I think that getting feedback on every build is unrealistic, I think that seeing some scores for each would be beneficial in just encouraging when we see improvement. For individual feedback, that could probably fall on the builder seeking it from his/her Guild Leader. That is how I found out some good feedback on my Embassy build from SI. As for prizes, I think that it is fantastic that prizes are offered. I joined the GoH just to build, compete and get better. When I found out that prizes were offered, that was like a nice little bonus. While I would love to win a prize, I realize that they have to come from somewhere, and the Guild Leaders have already donated so much time and effort that for them to continue to donate money as well seems like a lot to ask! That being said, with the prize system set up as it is, I think some more quantity at smaller scale in the prizes would be beneficial. Not to the point that we all get a 'trophy' like in T-ball, but so that at least the top performer in each Guild got a smaller prize from a challenge, rather than just the one Joust set. Of course I'm sure the winner of the Joust will not complain, and neither would I! All in all, keep up the great work! I am not burned out with GoH and definitely would like to see it keep going. As for building in other themes, I am torn. I build castles. That defines me as an AFOL. I'd like to expand my horizons, but I'm not sure if the interest would be as intense for me. Pirates would be similar and I'm pretty sure that I would participate in that. As for Sci-Fi, that is a theme that I really love and would like to participate. I have not dabbled in that though, so there is the discomfort factor there. But as I type here, I am picturing a GoH format for Sci-Fi that includes Futuron and Blacktron with Mechs and space stations and I am getting myself kind of hyped up! So, I guess the answer is yes I would participate in another genre of this type of group challenge. With the limited time alloted between work and 4 kids, I would probably only be able to really be active with one type of GoH style group at a time. Which means, unless GoH ends I would have to make the choice of which I was active in, and the Castle theme would probably win.
  8. Hey guys, sorry for the string of inactivity I've had for a couple of weeks here! Things have been crazy around work and home lately and unfortunately Bricks are on the losing end of my time lately. I have been working on challenge 3 though and will have something to post for the guild. However, with the time constraints it won't be as big or detailed as I originally envisioned it to be. Looks like a lot of great ideas floating around the Guild, and I can't wait to start seeing some of these being posted!
  9. Nice builds Taz! The story is well written and I can't wait to see what happens next!
  10. Very cool! I like the sarcastic approach to the stereotypical fantasy beginnings..."Several strangers meet in a tavern....". It played with the genre and worked for your story at the same time!
  11. Robuko is dead on here! Everyone appears to be there with a purpose. The boat launch is a very cool detail added in there, and I immediately thought "is that De Gothia?" but then I saw your commentary!
  12. I agree that brick built structures always look better, and I think that your bridge added to your WIP wonderfully! Keep up the good work!
  13. Very cool build so far. The sheer size of it is impressive for how quickly you moved on this. Now....nobody quote me for what I just said, with a "that's what she said"....even though I probably deserve it.
  14. I swore that I already commented on this....but obviously not yet! I really like this build and the story to go along with it. The forced perspective of the city in the background looks great. That is a technique that I keep wanting to use, and I just haven't made it work yet. This makes me want to try again!
  15. Looks good! My only concern is that since Kaliphlin is missing, the bearded skeleton might represent our Guild of Kaliphlin! Hopefully we can help represent in there as well....
  16. DC-I agree about the NPU speakers, and possibly Nannan as well. They are definitely legends. As for a castle series of speakers, there are a ton that would be fun to hear from: Daniel Z 'DNL', Brian Corredor, Rocko(if we could lure him out of retirement), Eggy Pop, BusyBoy, and on and on.....of course we already have you here to pick your brain as well Mikel-That arachnid looks great!
  17. A beautiful facade to an even more stunning residence....I remember well the last time I was summoned to the Erudhalion residence. But we shall not speak of such things here
  18. SI-the idea of guest speakers, and making it Historica wide would probably be a huge benefit to everyone involved. There are some really prolific builders in GoH that could add a ton of knowledge for others to use. But, for anyone that has some connections that are not on GoH, bringing in a guest to give some tutorials would be truly epic! Imagine, Brian Kescenovitz coming in to give tutorials on the connections he uses for mech articulation(it could be used for brick built creatures), or Keith Goldman on how to manage a large scale build and make it feel lived in. The possibilities are endless, and being a newb, I only even know of a few of the greats!
  19. Great build and story gabe! I am reading the Fellowship of the Ring again right now and the white horse in the water reminded me of the scene crossing the Ford ahead of the Nazgul! As I read on and found all the riddles I was immediately drawn to the Hobbit that I jsut finished last week. Anytime something can be considered Tolkien-esque.....it is a winner!
  20. Wow, some great ideas coming out of this whole thing here. NM-I thinnk the whole idea of rewarding the Guild members for new techniques could really inspire some otherwise never imagined builds for our Guild. gabe-The architecture academy would fit absolutely perfectly. Plus like you said we wouldn't be too cluttered with badges, and it would still give everyone incentive to try new things. robuko-As soon as you mentioned the Petraea University build I started thinking of different interior wings that we could build focused on different types of architecture, culture, learning, etc... In other news.....how's everyone coming on their C3 builds? I'd love to see someone from our Guild win that great prize!
  21. Yuuuup....you'd think that the yellow and green flags would clue me in. Or, the Mitgardian title in your signature. But no, I still can't cite it properly! Oh well, still great idea nonetheless!
  22. I see that the Kaliphlin dwarves have gotten lazy and not provided us with the same technology their Avalonian cousins have created.....
  23. I liked the myth a lot, but I think that the way the MOC's laid out like a play or puppet show made it stand out as a very unique entry in this competition. Nice aproach!
  24. Very cool! I had thought about Sand Wyrms in the desert, and just seemed to avoid due to not feeling that I would it do it justice. Glad to see that you "tackled" this project. The idea for C3 sounds very unique and that alone will make your build stand out.....Now go win this one for Kaliphlin!
  25. I definitely agree with this. We definitely seem to have a 'family' feel to the Kaliphlin Guild, and I know that when I post a MOC, the comments I get are usually not just the obligatory "Great MOC", but instead have something useful for me to think of in the future. That is the kind of post I enjoy most about my MOC's. The whole reason I joined GoH was to improve as a builder and have a chance to team up with some other builders of various skill levels. The wide array of skill in the builders help us all, as even those that don't build the traditionally popular style or may not have as many bricks, often have unique ideas that traditional builders do not employ. I can say for a fact that the entire experience thus far has changed how I build, and how I look at others' builds as well. Now that I've sounded all warm and mushy, let's all pull in for a Guild Hug
