Troll Town [photos re-uploaded 04/07/2020]

That is some awesome work there. -
I got me a second Gatehouse Raid for parts and army building. The architecture for the Lego Council of Elrond comes form a different scene in the movie trilogy where Elrond is talking to Arwyn.

Ok, that makes sense.

Unique Characters in Army Builders
SerenityInFire replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I personally think Eomer was fine for the Uruk-Hai Army set, since all the riders of Rohan look the same anyway.- 35 replies

Awesome work, but I do think the mounted unique units should be accompanied by their noble steeds. In addition to the War Wagon and Elephant, the other unique units that are missing are the missionary, the long boat, the turtle ship and the eagle warrior. The Janissaries also didn't have the hats in the release version of the game. One last point, your use of the Ice Planet 2002 saw blade for a macuahuitl is simply brilliant.

I think it's a rather lovely looking gatehouse, and I really like the dual catapult as well. The one problem have with this set is the thing that pisses me off about the other sets in that these knights better be some pretty damn good sharp shooters as they have bows but with no arrow quivers. I mean, they only get one shot and that's it!

[Castle] What do you like best? Generic or Specific?
SerenityInFire replied to Artifex's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I voted for generic, but I do think a mix of the two could work very well; having few named characters in a theme that is very broad and allows for the builder to create the narrative. -
The official Lego "Council of Elrond" set actually comes from a different scene in the movie. I must say that you did a marvelous job with your version.

MOC: Meduseld, The Golden Hall of Edoras

Absolutely gorgeous work, and a good use of the "gold coin" pieces in the smaller 2013 Castle sets. -
I agree that the set design isn't all that well thought out and could/should have been better, but it is one of the most fun sets I have ever built and the big red dragon is stupendous and turned out to be quite a bit bigger than I thought. For anyone that's ever played Skyrim, the barn in Mill Village Raid makes an excellent perch for the dragon. Wizards Duel from the LotR series also fits well with this set since it also has a similar jagged edged motif. The red and black color scheme is one that is over used to the point of becoming cliche, but these Lego Castle sets pull it off nicely in a way that is fun and appealing. It is also a good color choice for the "bad guys" since it contrasts well with the blue and white/silver colors of the "good guys."

My favorite thing about this piece is how the siege tower, or mobile fortress rather, is pulled by two triceratops. Using one dinosaur alone as a beast of burden really communicates a sense of heaviness and weight to its load and using two of them only adds to sense of epic scale and the indomitable might of this rolling death machine.

I don't think it would be too difficult to do Parthian Cataphracts. You could just use the hoods of the Star Wars Royal Guards with a chainmail deco over the face mask.

Reading through the last few posts, I will recommend that you keep your themes limited to warfare, monuments and the Greek myths to make sure everything is kid appropriate. I'd stay away from temples/churches unless it's a place that's a well known monument - like the pyramids or stonehenge - or of otherwise historical significance. I say this since the Egyptians were more reknowned throughout the anchient world for their bizarre and often public sex practices than for their achievements in math and science, (not to mention what they did with their POW's) as well as the importance of prostitution in Babylonian religion. The Epic of Gilgamesh might be ok, so long as you omit the priestess (priestitute?) Shamhat. I have to say that I absolutely love your battering ram and war elephant designs for your "300" set. Any chance we'll eventually see some cataphracts and horse archers? On a side note, how come when you count, you go straight from three all the way to fourteen?

Your sets are outstanding! It looks to me though, like your Stonehenge is missing the altar stone, which in real life was stolen and used to build a bridge. http://gilavalleylodge9.wordpress.com/2012/03/04/stonehenge-from-whence-came-you/ http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/wales-news/tm_headline=ritual-piece-of-stonehenge-discovered&method=full&objectid=18646143&siteid=50082-name_page.html

I used to use Testor's enamel paints for painting model kits but I've since switched to Games Workshop acrylics because I got sick of getting buzzed all the time. They are also some of the highest quality acrylic paints out there and I would highly recommend using them.
