Heroica RPG - Quest #48: Death's Homecoming
Endgame replied to Endgame's topic in The Heroica Archive
Natasha points at the barrier of light blocking the exit to this area of the forest. "That is the exit to the forest - from there, uncle's manor is a hop, skip and a jump away. I can take down the barrier, but it is draining. Like, completely exhausting. That, and my head is spinning a bit too much to be use in combat scenarios... not that I was that great to begin with. I'm afraid that is as much as I can do on that end. No, if there were secret entrances, i bet they would've blockaded them - and my money is on the Proggs being the ones who set the traps, not fall victim to them. Consumables, you say?" Natasha heads in to her hut, and comes out, her arms full with various consumables. She lays them on the ground carefully, and the party examines them. Party Leader, please distribute the items! Phoenix Essence Mead Smelling Salts Nostrum Remedy Tonic Potion "That is all I got." -

"My manor? Oh, no! This is my uncle's manor, Howard Dini. I'm just his niece. I just drop by this time of year to study the arcane with him, and to keep him some company. Great magician? I wish. The most I can muster up is a few incantations, maybe zap of ether or two." The energetic young woman frowns at the mention of The Regret. She closes her eyes, tapping her foot as she tries to concentrate on the name, trying to place it. "White shell, deep voice, barbed back? Yeah... that creep..." Natasha sits down, and begins to recount the events surrounding her brainwashing for the party... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Natasha hide sin the corner of her hut, hoping no Proggs would bother to check in it. The manor had been captured for days now - she was just living off of the stock of snacks she kept handy in her personal hut. Thank goodness she and her uncle had built this back when she was 7... unbelievable how it was already 12 years. Rain pounds on the roof as she reads one of her uncle's texts - a dusty, spiral-bound tome detailing how to activate the forest's defense mechanisms. her eyes were weary from reading it, tired from the exceedingly small font - but she got the gist of how to turn on the incantations. Hopefully it'll help, keep out more intruders. Rubbing her eyes and yawning, with one last bite of an energy bar, Natasha rises and retrieves her wand from the other end of the hut. Heading outside, she begins drawing the various symbols required, muttering arcane words - praying she wouldn't stumble on any of the syllables. As she finishes and turns on the defense spells, behind her she can hear a faint rumbling, and Natasha turns around. 2 ghostly white claws emerge from underground, pulling out the entire body. The Regret. Natahsa double takes slightly, unaware the Proggs could tunnel - what could would the incantation do now? "Hello there, my dear." "Who do you think you are, barging in on a lady? Hmph!" Natasha lets a small beam of ether emit from her wand, heading for The Regret. Incredulously, The Regret catches the bolt of ether, and compresses it into an orb. Pitching it like a baseball, he flings it right back at natsha, he throws herself to the ground to dodge. She lets two more bolts fly, but The Regret deflects them effortlessly. "Now then, my dear... you will listen to me." The Regret's every word was covered in an irresistible layer of bliss, every syllable relaxing the young mage further. Everything The Regret said was becoming a hypnotic suggestion, and it was becoming harder and harder to resist. Natasha found herself nodding "yes" - why resist him? He seemed so nice... and his voice was so soothing... "I will listen to you." "You will stand up." Natasha obeyed nigh instantly, picking herself off the ground and standing up straight. "I will stand up." "You will obey my every command, slave." Natasha nodded - she wanted to do everything The Regret said. After all, why wouldn't she? That voice... That wonderful voice... Natasha's eyes began to glow purple, but she didn't mind. In fact, she welcomed it. "I will obey your every command, master." "You will stand here until issued further orders." "Yes, master. I will stand her until further orders. I will obey." The Regret chuckled - she had strong will, but it took a matter of seconds to break her. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Natasha hangs her head low, in shame. "And that is how it went. I must've been standing there for 3 or 4 hours at least, not a single thought in my head. Not my finest moment - and I doubt I would've ever snapped out of it without you guys shwoing up. So thanks for that." "Wait a *wheeze* second. It took The Regret that short of a time to get you obeying *cough* him?" "yeah, yeah. I'm weak willed, I know." "That isn't what I'm *wheeze* saying at all. It took The Regret an hour over the course of several days to break Aranoc - and in *cough* terms of willpower, you seem to be the same. How is he getting *wheeze* so much stronger so fast...?" -
I can't put all the development in one convo anyway, I need some in-battle character development for everyone's favorite emperor anyway.

If you hex a hastened enemy, does it get 2 hits on an enemy instead of 1?
-
I'm not sure if preset battles to such exact specifications is the best idea - you can end up with battles that can either be too hard or too easy, depending on what loot the party acquired before the quest and whatnot. it seems to have worked out pretty well thus far, the only battle being out of the difficulty curve (IMO) was Zee's. I'll admit that I'm not nearly as organized as Zepher - I just plan which enemies appear when, have a few preplanned specials, and give them a range (As in, HP: 300-400, SP: 4-8, Level: 23-25.) Confession? The shuffling mechanic for Aquos's battle was invented about an hour before the battle began. That is the worst offender, by far.

"To the contrary, I'm actually better today. Hopefully the Darkstar doesn't bring out... him." Syntax chuckles in the back of my mind, knowing "him" was referring to himself. Why did my greatest enemy have to be myself? Although, I suppose it was always that way, before Syntax even came to fruition. -

Galen awkwardly goes up to Natasha, the young woman too dazed to even realize what was happening. It seemed like she was set to receive commands during this time... but where was The Regret? Galen attempts to hand her a remedy, which she doesn't even respond to. Sighing, he just pours it down her throe, doing nothing. "Where is Master?" QM Note: It's cool, I'm getting swamped in snow too. "So sorry, Evoker, but I'm afraid I can't wipe the floor with you quite yet. though it would be mildly amusing, I have a coronation to attend - my coronation, in fact! The Era of Eidolon grows closer and closer by the second... Amazing, isn't it? The being created to be a slave one day rose to become the emperor of Uland... The irony really is delicious. At the risk of sounding woefully cliched, I'll put this simply: nobody can stop me, or they will die trying. Let this be a warning to you little vermin. My coronation will go down in history for all of eternity - and you will go down as the foolish insects who were crushed trying to stop it!" With that, Eidolon ascends into the sky, thunder claps sounding as he did. he soared off in the direction of Dini manor, a shadow in the night. He was unlike Aquos and Rhodus. Rhodus seemed insane, out of his mind. Aquos, although twisted, didn't seem as evil as the heroes once though. But Eidolon... Eidolon was calm. In control. And he seemed to be evil personified. The party had a coronation to crash, and they had to... lest the winged terror they had just encountered be crowned as Emperor Eidolon. As Eidolon ascends, he reveals a straight forward passageway. The party forges onwards, their meeting with the despicable horror still fresh in their minds. As evidenced by the omnipresent fog, they weren't out of the woods yet - metaphorically and literally. Rain continues to pour down, despite Eidolon being absent. At the end of the passageway, the party finds an interesting scene... A young woman wearing a dainty smile stands front and center, a small hut to the right. A wall of solid blue light barricades the exit of the woods, glowing mysteriously. the woman says quite plainly: "Hello." -

"Oh, rest assured, it fills my heart to the brim with joy! Acts of killing tend to. Perhaps I should clarify my stance a tad - I see no reason to spread happiness, to give it to others, when it is just going to go away. I'm quite alright making myself happy. I just know not to value it, to make it a priority - because, inevitably, it is going to go away." -

"Now, now Johon. You should know that saying that is merely an invitation to deep roast you like I did to your leader. You should know better then that." Ediolon speaks in a mock parent voice, an attempt to infuriate Johon. "Ether, mostly."
